Introductory

My name is Ace. I’ve been rping on tumblr for way longer than you’d expect.

My main blog is @thecodekeeper 

This blog will likely have a very limited number of muses as I find it to be the easiest way to focus on character development. 

Permanent semi-hiatus, I guess, with bouts of activity. 

Mun is 20+ so it’s probably best to keep things to 18+. This blog can feature nsfw themes heavy on gore,abuse, and so forth.

I don’t tag triggers. If something is super explicate (either gore or sexual) I’ll simply tag it nsfw. If we’re writing partners and there’s something you absolutely something you can’t write/see without being triggered just let me know and I’ll do my best to accommodate. 

I like to keep things chill. No drama. I’m too old for that shit.

I ended up picking an alternative faceclaim for Lachlan a while back because there were zero resources for John Mann. Also, y’know, why not. I chose Mackintosh because from the screencaps I saw of him there was a stoic, worn down vibe which jived very well with how I imagined Lachlan. Also, I just found out that he was on a show named “Luther”. Clearly I made the right choice.

     Rain. That’s what he felt. Wet cold pellets wetting his face and soaking his clothes. Cheeks. They throbbed…why were they throbbing? Without opening his eyes his hand travelled up to feel the knotted flesh. Ground. It was hard beneath his body. Why was he on the ground? Honestly, he couldn’t say. At one point or another, he probably had a reason. Did it really matter? No, he decided, no it really didn’t matter. Despite the rain, he could smell the city. It smelt musty and old. It was worn down and broken. Dull, lifeless, inanimate. It was like an old coloured movie. Slowly he rose from the filthy ground. He was wearing a brown overcoat and a worn pair of blue jeans…funny because he didn’t remember putting those clothes on then again he didn’t remember why he decided to lay down on the filthy ground either.       

     There was really no point in sitting, of course, there was really no point in standing but the ground was quite uncomfortable. Without a sound, the young man sat up. The sky above him rumbled and for the first time, he noticed that he was both soaked and cold. Slowly he dragged his feet down the narrow alley. He felt like a zombie…maybe he was. That might explain why everything seemed so dull. Then again he wasn’t craving brains. Well, that thought threw the zombie theory out the window. As he turned a random corner the rain began to lighten up; in the distance light splashing could be heard. As it came closer he turned his head only to have a gun shoved in his face, as if it was supposed to be threatening. The majority of his head was covered but judging from the steadiness of his hand he’d done this before.       

     In all honesty, he didn’t know what to make of this man. “ Empty your pockets.” Was he really so stupid as to try and rob someone who clearly didn’t have a penny to his name? “ Do it now! ” apparently so. Anyone else might have been scared but you can’t be scared to death when you’re already dead. In fact, he found himself taking a step forward. “ Do it, come on. Don’t make a threat if you aren’t gonna carry it out. ” The blandness in his voice surprised even him. The other man’s eyes flickered slightly- maybe it was the scars or maybe he realized that there was something seriously wrong with the man in front of him- then they hardened once more. . “ Don’t fuck with me! Empty ‘em now!.” Another step was accompanied by the deep hope that the guys would have the balls to pull the trigger. For a second the wannabe robber’s eyes wavered then a beacon of light flew from the sky.       

     The man didn’t even have time to cock his gun before he went down. The loud crunch of bone could be heard as his saviour’s fist connected with the assailant’s jaw. Why had this man saved him…and why the fuck was he dressed as a bat. This man, no not a man. It was clear by the determination in his movements that he was fighting for something beyond man. No, this symbol. Didn’t he understand how pathetic the fight was? Didn’t he realize that this dull dead city was beyond saving? Couldn’t he see that saving one lone man was completely pointless in a population of seven billion? Apparently not because he didn’t stop until the man was tied up securely and hung up on a pole as if that would serve as a warning. For a second the bat turned to him and their eyes met. Untold depth lay within. He knew you could tell by the hardness in the pupils. And then he blinked and He was gone.

      It was crazy. Where had he come from? Who was he? And why had he left without saying goodbye or leaving his number? That was an awful way to end their first date.

      It was pathetic really. Whatever He was fighting for. It was a lost cause. Yet he beat on the wannabe assailant as if he was really making a difference. He really thought that there was meaning in his actions. It was pathetically hilarious, a big joke. And for the first time, he felt something bubble up a wonderful euphoria.

      He looked up at the moonlit sky. A crack of thunder, a bolt of lightning. Some people say there’s a man on the moon, all he saw was a bat. There’s a bat on the moon. A giggle bubbled up, there was a bunny on the fucking moon. He laughed out loud. His scarred cheeks spread to their absolute limit. A bat. Laughter passed his lips, what a joke, a bunny. And like that, he was whooping and howling until tears came to his eyes because there was a god damn bat carved into the moon. His stomach cramped with pain but he continued to laugh, unable to stop. The screams of laughter and pain ricocheted off the walls. He felt something slip away, like a wisp of air, never saying goodbye. Gone…gone…gone…the bat hid behind a cloud…

      The World was a Joke and he was the Joker.

Piracy: the Reference Guide

The stereotypical pirate accent is a Hollywood invention. 

If you’re looking to make your muse’s speech more prate-y check out old nautical slang instead ( glossaries: here & here ).

Pirates very rarely made people walk the plank. 

Historical examples of walking the plank are scarce and can be boiled down to a few isolated cases in the Baltic towards the end of the 1700s. It was far more common that a pirate would maroon his enemies. Where someone was marooned ( an island in the middle of the ocean with no vegetation or an island closer to civilization ) and what they were marooned with ( a pistol with one shot or a week’s worth of provisions ) varied according to the gravity of the offense and the mercy of the captain.

Pirates were democratic.* 

The “pirate code” was a real thing–a set of articles drafted and ratified by every member of the crew outlining the rules for the ship and the general modes of resolving disputes. All administrative positions aboard the ship were elected–the two most important of these positions were captain and quartermaster. Quartermaster served as the voice of the crew when making decisions with the captain and often held the power to outright veto any action the captain decided to take if the crew demanded it. Ultimately, every decision ( even choosing where to sail next ) was subject to a vote. The captain only had absolute authority in times of war or life-threatening disaster.

* Democratic models were popularized and implemented almost exclusively by the Buccaneers and Caribbean pirates of the 17th and 18th centuries, they were not universal among all pirates throughout history. The form of democracy practiced by pirates is considered more pure than most modern models of democracy because it operates on a “one man, one vote” system that does not prioritize or favor any one vote more than another.

The terms “pirate,” “privateer,” “corsair,” and “buccaneer” are not interchangeable.

Pirate - a legal category applied to anyone who “robs and murders on the high seas.” Privateer - An individual with a letter of marque ( or legal document from the government of a certain country ) which allowed them to attack and plunder merchant ships from rival countries during times of war. Any prizes taken by privateers were subject to “prize law” which split profits between ship captain, crew, and issuing sponsor. Corsair - Privateers that operated primarily along the southern coast of the Mediterranean between the 16th and 18th centuries. Buccaneer - Privateers and Corsairs who later formed a loose coalition called the Brethren of the Coast that operated in the Caribbean Sea during the 17th and 18th centuries ( these are the pirates that were popularized by P.irates of the C.aribbean and B.lack S.ails )

The pirate code often curbed stereotypical pirate vices like gambling and lust with limited tolerance to zero tolerance policies.

Excessive drinking was still incredibly common but codes issued punishment for sailors that were drunk while on duty because drunken mistakes could jeopardize the safety of the ship and crew. Codes also outlined basic safety rules like forbidding sailors from “snapping” a pistol in the hold ( to do so was a fire hazard ).

For poor mariners or sailors, piracy held real appeal. 

The pirate lifestyle offered better pay and better working conditions than most legal merchant ships.

Women aboard ships were not a good thing. 

Sailors’ superstitions held that women were bad luck because men might be prone to jealous outbursts and infighting in the presence of a woman. Similarly, members of pirate crews were strongly discouraged from marrying because marriage had the potential to split a man’s loyalty to the crew and make him anxious to return home.

Pirates were dangerous criminals. 

Although life as a pirate seems pretty great, pirates were still ruthless killers by definition ( the term “pirate” was coined as early as the 14th century and has consistently been used to legally define sailors who commit murder and theft on the high seas ) and in practice. C.harles V.ane in particular was known for his practice of beating and torturing anyone aboard ships he captured.

Not all ports were unfriendly to pirates. 

Many ports in European colonies ( like Philadelphia, Boston, and New York ) welcomed trade from pirates because this trade often promised a wider selection of foreign goods that cost significantly less than the highly taxed goods from legal European merchants.

It was quite common for pirates to be missing limbs. 

Pirates who lost limbs were afforded a sort of “compensation” pay for their injury and were often allowed the choice to remain aboard the ship or return to port. Those that chose to stay served in essential ( but less physically taxing ) roles like ship cook.

Caribbean Piracy in the Golden Age of Piracy. 

During the Golden Age of Piracy ( approximately 1650 to 1720 ), pirates were most active in the Caribbean and eastern Pacific because of unstable colonial holdings in the Americas, numerous small scale conflicts between European powers, and an excess of privateers left, suddenly, without letters of marque.

Unfortunately, pirates didn’t legalize gay marriage. 

The practice of matelotage ( which stirred up this rumor ) was really just a financial agreement on distribution of assets in the case of death. It was far more common that homosexual relationships were met with swift and harsh punishment ( often death for sailors involved ).

Female pirates were real. 

A.nne B.onny, M.ary R.ead, and M.adame C.hing actually lived and were incredibly successful. But, female pirates were incredibly uncommon, and those women should be taken as a very small and very interesting exception to the rule against having women aboard a ship.
