Some thoughts on the guidance to schools regarding transgender students' civil rights that was rescinded yesterday, why it matters, and what you can do to support trans youth.

This is an issue of civil rights, and this whole, "Local governments and schools can come up with strategies that fit their needs," argument is absurd. That being said, state and local legislation and advocacy may well be our first line of defense going forward. Being familiar with what protection exists on the local level in your area, if any, is a good first step. 

Stats are from a national survey by GLSEN, based on the experiences of 295 transgender middle and high school students: http://www.glsen.org/…/rese…/national/report-harsh-realities. It's worth noting that (surprise surprise!) there's not a huge wealth of statistics out there.
