John Martin, The Destruction of Pompeii and Herculaneum, 1822
Martin’s typical style of depicting apocalyptic landscapes suits the events of August 24th AD79 pretty well. The civilians from both towns are seen fleeing the erupting Vesuvius to reach the dry land across the Bay of Naples. Martin seems to imagine the scene as a kind of Biblical event, especially with those glowing red pillars of lava and smoke.
