summary : you wake up in a house you don't remember, with people you have yet to learn the names of.
you were cooked. absolutely cooked.
you didn't know when it started. when your instincts had started getting slower, and places you remembered the path for by heart now needed google maps or it'd started to sound like this.
"i can't believe i've never gone here before!"
"didn't you mention before it was your favorite place here?"
"really? i don't remember that."
you don't even remember the man asking you that. it should've concerned you.
you wake up in a room you don't remember sleeping in, in a house you have no idea where the hallways lead to. you pass by photos of family pictures, all of which contained pictures of you and people you don't remember. it's a miracle you even find the stairs, walking down to an even bigger area. it's then you're greeted by an old man wearing a suit.
"you're up later than usual." the man greets. you didn't expect he'd have an accent. were you in the uk?
not wanting to seem suspicious, you smile awkwardly as you try copying his accent. to which you get a small smile out of him. "good morning to you too, young master." so you're not british. he mentions breakfast being ready, that you needed to eat now.
"um, which way is the kitchen again?"
another smile play on his lips. you laugh awkwardly. "haha.. uh.. could you just, be there with me?" you try again. "of course." you breathe a sigh of relief.
you sit down at the table, picking up an already made plate and eating it. like a normal person. to your surprise—the old man, that you have not yet learned the name of, mentioned that it was one of your favorites. you only hum in response. it didn't taste that good, why would it be your favorite? the words slip from your wrists as you shrug. the man raises an eyebrow at you, and you feel like you're being judged. not feel. definitely being judged.
alfred's been judging you since you didn't wake up early to greet your brothers, or your father. he's been judging you since you needed help remembering a place you went to a lot, or the words to describe someone.
he's been judging.
when he saw that instead of taking your plate and eating on the couch, you sat down on one of the chairs in the dining room and ate silently. no phone. nothing. you ate slow and stared off into the distance, as if thinking about something. as if processing something.
"they're all here for the family dinner tonight." he shrugs. surely that must've been the reason you were acting strange. you just tilt your head. "okay."
you sat up when you were finished, smiling when he said he'd take care of your plate. usually you'd insist on doing it. it's different this time.
you don't know that. you're trying not to be strange. but you have no idea who this man is. or who was attending that family dinner. "um, do i have any other plans today?" you ask him. "not that i know of, why?" "nothing, i just feel like i'm forgetting something." you say, before heading upstairs.
you were still fairly you. you had at least a bathroom in your room after a short tour. you had motivational words written on sticky notes pasted on your mirror. you smiled at them, then at yourself before taking a shower.
you spend most of your time in the room you had woken up in.
it was then you learned you had accidentally stood "kayla" up at around 3pm. the onslaught of text messages popping up from your phone had indicated that. too bad you don't know the password to it.
you find the password scribbled onto a piece of paper under your bed. two hours later. you didn't think to check there, you didn't even care to. "sorry i was caught up in something." you slowly type.
you come down at about 7pm, being called by another guy. to which you nod and follow downstairs. you're surprised at the amount of people downstairs, awkwardly waving hi to people you don't remember. to faces you're supposed to hold some sort of recognition to.
it's no secret that you're awkward. but you're weirder than usual today. whenever jason finally visited one of these family dinners, you would be rushing to talk to him. right now, all he's getting is an awkward wave as you sit down next to dick. you're quieter, too. you're not trying to share something or speak with the rest of them— you even flinch when they ask you about what you did today. "um.. nothing much." you'd say meekly. weird.
dick was already raising his eyebrows when you actually followed him downstairs instead of whining about before going down without him. a dance he's grown used to.
you don't even call them by their nicknames or try getting their attention. it's weird. you were their weird younger sibling. you were supposed to be weird, but it's not like how it usually is.
maybe they had gotten too busy and this was your way of pouting? your attempt of punishing them for forgetting you?
either way, you managed to make it through dinner without standing up and just asking everyone who they were. you smiled during dinner, you took a decent amount of food and finished it like a normal person. you tried joking with them like you've known them for years. it didn't really land, so you stopped trying. you try going upstairs when someone pulls you back. "where are you going? i thought everyone agreed we'd have a movie night?" "don't make this about yourself again." you apologize. you felt like you've done this before, you don't remember it.
you sit down alone, wrapped up in a blanket by yourself, sat down by yourself and watched.
"no unnecessary commentary this time. nice one little wing!" someone joked. you didn't reply because you didn't know they were talking to you. that someone being dick. it was a weird name, who'd name their kid that? apparently the man sitting next to the other small kid—damian. you learned throughout the conversation what their names and nicknames were. you also learned that they were your family, and your brothers. you didn't understand. nobody looked like the.. b? bruce. bman. well, except for jason. he might've actually birthed that one out. and the damian kid who keeps calling him todd.
you slip away when you hear the other's snores, back upstairs. like a habit. like muscle memory, your legs just know that it's time to stand up and leave. your heart tells you that it's sinking. that you're sad. but your mind is as clueless as you.
you sit down on your bed, and you smile seeing that you haven't made things awkward for the people downstairs. "that was so fucking weird." you murmur to yourself.
but they're discussing it during patrol. "what the hell was up with y/n earlier? wouldn't talk to either of us." jason huffs. "agree." tim echoes before continuing. "they were also awkward. like they were adjusting to us, y'know? were we gone that long?"
it's a pregnant pause before damian finally speaks. "they may have taken that clingy comment too seriously." "or we're too busy to notice them" dick quotes.
but the rest of the patrol had them thinking why you had been acting like that. they were used to your overbearing presence, to your yapping, to your attention-seeking behavior. but that light had slowly dimmed. not that anyone cared to notice.
but that's just something they store in their brain. and it went on months— with you thinking that you were playing your part well.
“you're not going out? thought that was kind of your thing?” you shrug, you had different things to tackle. like caring for a stranger, but you still love the things you love– maybe you'll head out today.
“i’ve been meaning to, uh- thanks for asking.” you say.
awkward smiles and laughs. you don't know how you're gonna make through this.
before jason finally snapped at you. "what the hell's your problem? you've been acting out for the past few months, i think it's time you give up this stupid ass act of yours."
you're startled, surprised he saw through.
"you can ghost all your friends, stay here for as long as you'd like but seriously— give us a heads up when you start acting like.. like this!" he continued. you apologize again realizing that he didn't actually know anything.
"sorry.. i um, just started to change. haha, puberty." you laugh awkwardly, before apologizing to everyone and heading upstairs.
they think you're crying like always. but you have no idea how to react to a stranger yelling at you.
you were not only cooked. you were burnt.
torn up and ate quick just when you thought you played the part of being some family's.. sibling. yeah, you didn't know how they wanted you to act. you searched your name up for reference a month ago, plus you didn't think you were acting ridiculous. you were just.. nonchalant. that should've been under their radar—you woke up to a quiet house with nobody checking up on you, naturally, you thought you would be an independent baddie or something.
you were wrong, obviously. it's like they wanted you to act as ridiculous as dick was. or light up a whole room like duke(literally). like, how could you act like that to people you barely know? you know some of your friends, at least you could still talk to them freely. you act the same way around them, and your friends have never found any problem with you.
so what was their problem?
