I still think that my favorite urban legend/folklore fact is that there are certain areas in New Orleans where you cannot get a taxi late at night not because it isn’t safe, but because taxi companies have had recurring problems of picking up ghosts in those areas who are not aware that they are dead and disappearing from the cab before reaching the destination and therefore stiffing the driver on the fare causing a loss for the company.

In a book about the tsunami in Japan in 2011, the writer talked about how there was a huge increase in reports of ghostly activity. Apparently in Japan treating ghosts rudely is basically considered the stupidest thing you could possibly do. For months after the tsunami, taxi drivers would pick up a passenger only to have them give an address in one of the devastated areas. The cab driver often looked up halfway to the destination to find their fare had disappeared. Not wanting to be impolite to the person (even if they were dead) they’d drive to the address, open the door to let them out, then drive away.

COVID is slowly becoming a "third world" disease. While first world countries are hoarding vaccines, having doses for populations many times their size, third world countries can't get any because pharma companies want to sell to the first world countries first. Even then, first world countries will receive them first. While rich countries recover from COVID, they will forget about the pandemic while many other countries live the absolute worst moment of the pandemic without being able to vaccinate their population.

i was debating on whether or not i should post this on tumblr but seeing as there haven’t been posts about this yet, here it is. i’m exposing my real location and nationality but it doesn’t matter.

if you have been active on twitter, you may already know #savemyanmar is trending. long story short, there has been a military coup. several nations have released statements but i want to share insight on what’s happening in the country.

memes about a coup have been circulating around for a couple days and when i slept at 2 am last night, we were still under the rule of the National League for Democracy (NLD). while they are not technically democratic, they are the closest we’ve got. when my mother woke up at 6 this morning, she was notified that the country was now under the rule of the military.

banks services are no longer available. wifi was cut at around 7-8. some people got wifi again earlier but many got it barely thirty minutes ago. this is bad for businesses especially ones that require international communications. additionally, international students like myself are experiencing anxiety; how do we pay for and attend classes if we’re not sure wifi is a given?

myanmar has a long, complicated history with military governments. the last time the military went into rule was in 1962 and only stopped in 2011, following the 2010 elections. there was a huge protest in 1988 lead by students that resulted in lots of death. during the military junta, resources like rice, water, oil, were scarce. the gist is military rule is bad for us.

all of my followers are not myanmar citizens, i’m sure but as part of the international community, please help us. here is a petition that you can sign (although i’m not sure if that can do much). there may be protests in front of myanmar embassies so look out for those. most of all, please help spread awareness. 

the people here are coping with dark humor, primarily in the form of memes but we don’t know how long this rule will last, even though the official statement said only a year. here’s something that pretty much sums up our coping mechanism:

Fun fact: If my younger sister was in a car accident and desperately needed a blood transfusion to live, and I was the only person on Earth who could donate blood to save her, and even though donating blood is a relatively easy, safe, and quick procedure no one can force me to give blood. Yes, even to save the life of a fully grown person, it would be ILLEGAL to FORCE me to donate blood if I didn’t want to.

See, we have this concept called “bodily autonomy.” It’s this….cultural notion that a person’s control over their own body is above all important and must not be infringed upon. 

Like, we can’t even take LIFE SAVING organs from CORPSES unless the person whose corpse it is gave consent before their death. Even corpses get bodily autonomy. 

To tell people that they MUST sacrifice their bodily autonomy for 9 months against their will in an incredibly expensive, invasive, difficult process to save what YOU view as another human life (a debatable claim in the early stages of pregnancy when the VAST majority of abortions are performed) is desperately unethical. You can’t even ask people to sacrifice bodily autonomy to give up organs they aren’t using anymore after they have died. 

You’re asking people who can become pregnant to accept less bodily autonomy than we grant to dead bodies.

And here’s another point: When you say that “rape is the exception” you betray something FUNDAMENTALLY BROKEN about your own argument.

Because a fetus produced from sexual assault is biologically NO DIFFERENT than a fetus produced from consensual sex. No difference at all.

If one is alive, so is the other. If one is a person, so is the other. If one has a soul, then so does the other. If one is a little blessing that happened for a reason and must be protected, then so is the other. 

When you say that “Rape is the exception” what you betray is this: It isn’t about a life. This isn’t about the little soul sitting inside some person’s womb, because if it was you wouldn’t care about HOW it got there, only that it is a little life that needs protecting.

When you say “rape is the exception” what you say is this: You are treating pregnancy as a punishment. You are PUNISHING people who have had CONSENSUAL SEX but don’t want to go through a pregnancy. People who DARED to have consensual sex without the goal of procreation in mind, and this is their “consequence.”

I need straight cis white people to understand that minorities in general have a different relationship with storytelling. We simply don’t engage with stories in the same way. We don’t care about that gritty profound realistic narrative crap. We’re not here because we want to cry. We want to be entertained and forget our fucking troubles. I’m drunk and I’m going on a rant but Alex Manes and Michael Guerin deserve to be together. Alex Manes has gone through so much shit. He somehow survived years of living under, what no doubt, was the torture of a homophobic parent, living with the constant threat of losing the person he loves (Michael) because of said homophobic parent, and on top of all that, literally losing a limb to a war he never even wanted to be a part of when he joined (Sure he might of ended up enjoying the military as an end result but I’m sure as hell that goth, eyelined, black nail polished and nose ringed Alex Manes did not join the armed forces in his own volition). And Michael Guerin survived losing the only family he had for nearly seven years, surviving a system that was practically created to make him break (because let’s admit it, the foster system is so fucking broken), and survived losing the love of his life not once (when Alex initially enlisted), not twice (when Alex went to Baghdad) but more than four times (i.e, Alex losing his leg in Iraq and Alex leaving him after the scene at the trailer and the drive-in movie theater). The two deserve love more than any other character I’ve ever seen on TV, maybe because I’m drunk but more likely because they actually do. And if they don’t get together and give each other the love they need and deserve by the end of season one, I’m going to cry.

Now the characters I almost don’t wanna address because this stupid ass show took something away from me that I really fell for and thought was ‘cosmic’, I don’t anymore..

Maria Deluca, there’s nothing wrong with falling for someone you can’t have, we all do that, not going after someone you know your best friend is in love with is what makes us worthy of the people we call best friends, and I thought you weren’t the kind of person who threw those titles around just cause, I thought a best friend would mean more to you..I connected with you, I liked you, but I don’t anymore..

Michael Guerin, I know you’ve been through a lot and I know you want to feel loved, but you made the biggest mistake ever, you shouldn’t have kept Alex waiting or did you just forget about that, there’s no better option you pushed away your family, Izzy and Max, because you didn’t feel you belonged and you were looking for something else, most people would blame others for not making you feel belonged, but I’ve been there and I know when someone is actively pushing people out and just simply not reaching out.. I thought they’d give you character growth, but they took away whatever you even had..

And yeah, Malex, never gonna be my OTP, unless they delete that finale from existence..

I did enjoy RNM, there are characters I still love, but would I return if the show returns?

That boy did not watch his father beat the man he loves, go enlist to fight a war he never wanted to be involved in originally, lose a fucking limb, and almost die just to have to wait over twelve hours to talk to the man he loves who just left him alone while he went to make out with someone else.
