watched Toronto again last night and remembered how mad I was when people acted like it was the tackiest, most vulgar end of the world thing that we had to see Gabriella have this clearly psychologically complex response to having her son questioned about the trauma he experienced as a child—his childhood stutter which began because of her actions, as she tried to make sure he got out of a home where they were both being abused…only to sexually abuse him herself. As she is sitting there pretending to not even be that person—the abused wife or the abusive mother—knowing at any time he has the ability to call her back into that self. Like there is SO much going on there!

and I just cannot think of a single one of the male characters where it would not be The Scene Of the Decade if they’d responded to that kind of cyclical trauma and abuse by having loud, performative sex and staring at themselves in the mirror the whole time. But she’s a woman (and a woman over fifty!) so it makes her and the entire piece ridiculous and embarrassing.
