Bumble Bee ‘Jasper’ is the trade name for colourful fibrous Calcite found only on the Indonesian island of Java. ‘Jasper’ is a misnomer, as it contains little or no Quartz.
It forms in volcanic fumarole environments and is a porous, layered, multi-coloured sedimentary rock. Bumble Bee ‘Jasper’ contains varying amounts of Sulphur (yellow layers), manganese oxides (black), the arsenic-sulphide minerals Realgar and Orpiment (orange), and the calcium-carbonate minerals Calcite and Aragonite.
