inside you there are two wolves: the tortured poet and the showgirl
let's all talk about supernatural. i'll start. in 2009 kim manners told misha collins it was gay to sit on a bed. due to the lack of distance. he was right. and misha collins did it anyway. what followed was 12 years of television subject to different directors writers and actors all with different opinions on the subject of whether or not dean and castiel were gay. because of this rotating list of minds and directions the messages you receive are varied. but crucially. there is groundwork laid in closeups. standing five feet apart in bobby's kitchen filmed as if they're face to face. across the room from each other in tmwwbk but cuts between close up to close up. now you could easily argue that camerawork that rejects this method is trying to convey a different message of less empathy. but. we are not working only with camera work that conveys distance. we're working with a foundation of intimate conversations filmed as intimate closeups . followed by intimate conversations filmed with yards and yards between them. for an amv i was trying to use the s8 talk where cas is sitting on the bed and dean walks over sits down and says talk to me and i eventually had to scrap it because they're never in the same frame. i was going frame by frame in that scene trying to get maybe three seconds where you can see both of them but you never can. in the scene where dean sits a foot away and asks. what's wrong. you can tell me. you can talk to me. and cas proceeds to bare his soul. which is one of two things: bad directing, or purposeful directing. bad directing requires us to operate under the assumption that people who work on supernatural are bad at their jobs (likely). purposeful directing requires us to operate under the assumption that people who work on supernatural are good at their jobs, and given an intimate conversation, looked for ways to dilute the emotion in it, and did so. this is also likely. when supernatural shows me castiel telling dean i love you, and does it with shoddy camerawork, they are practicing tell not show. they are turning to the camera and telling me. this means nothing. disregard this. dont you see how they're a good court length apart from each other. doesn't this distance make you feel like you should interpret this with a platonic lens. but what they are showing me. is castiel telling dean winchester. i love you. which comes across even through the janky disjointed shots. the diluted effect still has an outsized emotional impact. so my takeaway is not. well i guess this means nothing. it is. i see the tricks you are trying to use on me. and they dont work on me because i know how to interpret storytelling and i'm not young and shiny and stupid. my takeaway is . wow. dean and cas., are in love for real, and they put it on my screen, and i am going to plant dynamite in director richard speight's home
man supernatural might be bad but also ill be damned if thats not the most american show ever. like theres movies and tv that've tried to be this american but 99% have failed. you watch a particularly good episode of supernatural and suddenly you feel the hours of highway winds against your skin and theres more asphalt road than livable terrain for miles and you eat the best meal of your life at a pit stop and you havent gone to church since you were a kid but you still think about praying sometimes and you split a 6 pack with someone you love and a few too many people around you have guns and the land around you is so big when youre right in the center of it you feel like it could swallow you up and you know for a fact theres an unimaginable amount of mythology just beneath the surface. and then you watch the next episode where sam kills paris hilton or something
jackles invented the multiverse car so he could finally fuck dean.
Dean and Cas are retired and just moved into their new home, a beautiful lakehouse, where they are spending their second wedding anniversary.

Love to be on a website where I can join such hit 2022 fandoms as "century old public domain novel being read very slowly" and "half-century old mafia film that does not actually exist."
so if it’s the KAZ license plate….. he’s in heaven right?
it’s so surreal to me that supernatural went on for so long that the final arc of the show was literally the main characters screaming and begging and fighting for freedom and rest from a controlling and obsessive author/god who had been writing their lives up until that point, who simply would not let them die. it went on for so long that it went from being a show where the two leads used phones with antennae and made references to myspace, to being a show where they literally referenced the “sir, this is a wendy’s” meme and dean said “galaxy brained”. it went from being a dark and gritty show shot on film to being a show shot on digital where the saturation was so bright that it looked like a sitcom even at night. after 15 seasons, all the fear and grittiness and tension had been sucked out of the narrative. it devolved from story about choosing free will over destiny into a story about whether or not having free will is even possible after you’ve discovered that god has personally controlled your whole life. the transformation from “classic kripke era” supernatural into “network controlled never-ending” supernatural was literally played out in the storyline of the show itself. it’s unbelievable.
so the season one character pitch for supernatural is two brothers: one is emotional and heartfelt, he’s sympathetic and feels sympathy for others, he’s our main character. the other is more the comedic relief. he’s a womanizer and he’s always joking around even when it’s inappropriate. of course he cares about people, but it’s not nearly as obvious. dean is a hunter through and through, whereas it’s never quite been the life sam was supposed to have.
but then the show breaks that dynamic immediately. like literally three episodes in. with what we know about the characters from the first two episodes, we would expect sam to be the one to make the effort to reach out to lucas, to show him sympathy, to sit down and talk with him and to ultimately be the one to get the answers. up until this point, he’s the more “emotional” one, not to mention he’s set up to be the main character. but instead, it’s dean who takes up that position. he’s the one who talks to lucas even though no one else sees a reason to do so. even though lucas doesn’t talk back, dean never gets frustrated or annoyed like we might expect him to. instead, he’s shown making the same actions we would expect sam – our main character – would perform.
from what we learn later about how dean raised sam, the fact that he’s good with kids makes sense. but we as the viewer haven’t learned that yet, nor is it a concept that’s introduced in this episode – it only makes sense looking back.
i’m not exaggerating when i say this episode defines dean’s character for the rest of the show. it would have been so easy to just swap sam and dean’s lines for the episode to continue the trend we’ve seen so far. or even just move the plot of the episode to a later point so we know more about the brothers’ lives growing up. but no, three episodes in, and they decide to completely shift the viewer’s preexisting perceptions of dean as a character.
we are told three episodes in that dean winchester is far more complex than we are initially lead to believe. so of course the viewer immediately stops buying the comic relief womanizing perception of dean – the show breaks that perception almost as quickly as they introduce it.
One of the frustrating things about Supernatural being filmed in and around Vancouver instead of on actual U.S. backroads is the lack of batshit religious signage that’s a key feature around the Bible Belt and in especially rural parts of the Midwest, and would have taken on a deliciously ominous tone in seasons 4-5, season 11, and season 15 in particular.
Like where are the Jesus Lives signs painted in what might well be dried blood on rotting wooden planks nailed to random trees along the state highway? Where are the falling down barns no one has bothered to repair, but someone sure put in the effort to paint GOD IS ALWAYS WATCHING on the side facing the road? Where are the gigantic white crosses looming over the interstate like pale angels poised to rain God’s wrath upon us? Where are the wackadoo church bulletins trying to sound cheeky and relevant?
Truckstop America’s aesthetic is steel, concrete, and the smell of gasoline, true. But throughout a good third or more of the country it’s ALSO batshit religious signage and I think it’s pretty indicative of how they failed to go hard enough with their own premise that in fifteen seasons we never see any.
behold, the single best shot in the whole show (from 5x10)
@cowbeau SCREAM yes we got it One Good Time. SPN really said less is more except when it comes to homophobia misogyny and really going all in on our show’s basic premise.
Also bestie you simply must not leave this in the tags:
I would HAVE LIKED TO SEE IT.
Also consider: Cas having his crisis of faith in season 5 and “Are You Right With The Lord” signs.
For the folks in the tags going “this can’t be real” here, have some Muricanatural Aesthetix:
Giant Crosses:
Church Signs Attempting to be Relatable:
Ominous Billboards from God’s Perspective:
(There used to be one in Atlanta that said “Don’t make me come down there.” - God)
Doing a separate reblog because I ran out of images on this one.
Increasingly Forboding Roadside Signs:
And I couldn’t even find any examples of the painted barn signs but trust me. They exist.
Allow me to direct your attention to what we here in Cincinnati call, “Hug Me Jesus,” or “5 Dollar Footlong Jesus.”
It’s 52 feet tall, and impossible to miss on the way to…oh, literally anywhere that far up 75.
Bonus points because it replaced the old version of this statue, referred to as “Touchdown Jesus,” after it was struck by lightning and burned for OVER A DAY.
Thanks, Ohio!
Not nearly as impressive but these have been all over my hometown for about 5yrs now.
May I submit my favorite
Yup. That’s the Midwest. America. What a concept.
Anyone who doesn’t believe it has never driven along the highway in rural America. But don’t forget to mention the counter billboards trolling back. Sometimes they just have ongoing wars with neighboring billboards for years.
My personal favorite? My personal favorite wasn’t a physical billboard. It was the time the Westboro Baptist Church was accidentally made into a pokemon Gym. A user named pinknose took control of the gym with a clafairy named ‘Love is Love’ establishing the wbc as an ingame virtual billboard for the gays. This caused the wbc to wage a war against the cartoon ‘sodomite’, placing a jigglypuff there for a short time before a user named Saigun changed the gym leader a level 666 Magmar named Satan.
Unable to do anything about it, wbc starting putting out images of pokemon with ‘repent’ signs. You can’t make this shit up.
I swear most Americans are normal, present spn company excluded for very different reasons.

[based on this post] the world is safe, chuck is gone, and everyone came back…almost. with heaven and hell now on lockdown and his four year-old god/son ignoring his calls, a grieving dean struggles to move on after cas’ sacrifice. when jack returns with a way into the empty, however, the winchesters and their friends come together for one last hunt to bring their angel home.
i hate supernatural i love supernatural i could fix supernatural i want to erase supernatural i would watch more supernatural i need to stop watching supernatural i should be hired to write for supernatural every supernatural writer needs to be burned at the stake. im going to go watch supernatural now
no one can turn a phrase like chloe @macklesufficient i swear
#listen when im right im right #they were mad at misha for no longer being a canvas upon which they could paint doe eyed st sebastian-esque Twink Things so they #had to punish him by making him ugly and like hey i get it!!!!! #the last time they let him be attractive was that time in season 9 when he got tortured and they were comically horny about it #which again i love #someone noticed that misha had been weight training and immediately #went for the red corn syrup like ‘shave your chest father of two it’s fanservice time’
SHE’S DONE IT AGAIN LADS
I hope you can hear me. Cas, I need to say something.
supernatural as a piece of media consistently amazes me. you've got the rock music and the leather jackets and the classic car. you've got the americana. you've got the spooky stuff. you've got the wildly complicated relationship with masculinity. and then four seasons in you add angels and demons and God and Satan. and now there's motifs of religion and hell and guilt and loving someone in the face of everything you're supposed to be. based on every single thing about it there is NO WAY this show could ever manage to be uncompelling to me. however it was made by straight men
I have been on this web site for more than a decade I have seen women and gays make the most gorgeous fascinating art and fiction and gifsets that are in theory based off Supernatural and then you go to watch the show and it periodically sneezes in the direction of the coolest plotline you could ever imagine and then just wanders off into the muck again. it's like having a friend who's gorgeous and smart and funny and then you meet her boyfriend and he is a worm
THIS ISN'T HATE it's just fascinating to me to see the potential of a piece of media so thoroughly tapped by the fanbase and so wholly untapped by the writers. you guys are doing amazing. eric krupke on the other hand
