I wish the ppl who make those “woman are poorly written in anime” videos will get to a point where they’ll realize that anime isn’t shounen. This stuff has been around since the 50s and there are a lot more genres that exist outside of shounen.
i think some people need to realise that women being strong and/or badass in fiction does not mean that their character is well written and well developed. it’s actually insanely easy to give a woman character a backstory full of trauma but put her in a sexy outfit and show her “fighting good” or being snarky - but not actually engage with her trauma, not give her meaningful relationships, not give her complex goals. it’s mostly tho ofc not entirely men that talk this way about women in fiction, and i think they’re well-meaning in trying to uplift women in fiction that they think are cool, but coolness does not a good character make. i’m not saying that no “strong female character” is well written, i can think of quite a few, but it’s not a sufficient criteria, and i think a lot of genuinely well written women in fiction are overlooked because people (again mostly men but not entirely never entirely) can’t relate to them and don’t care to try to.
anyways top two tips for finding media with well written female characters! 1) consume media written by women and 2) stop consuming things written for adolescent boys!!!!
the way anime fans beg for well written female characters and then refuse to explore any genres outside of shonen is super frustrating
I understand if shonen is your favorite genre and you just want to see well written women in that genre (that is going to be more difficult but they do exist) and that’s a whole other conversation
but if it’s about how there’s “no good female characters in anime” or “I want to see women having personalities in anime” then there is a whole world outside of shonen where you will be able to find them easily. I’m not going to pretend that misogyny isn’t an issue outside of shonen but it’s actually incredibly easy to find female anime characters that are deep, have personality, are pivotal to the story, etc. etc. etc. you just have to look outside of the top 5 most popular action shows and they will be there
i'm so well fed with amazing female characters in magical girl anime that i forget there's people who only watch shonen and think that's a whole representation of female characters in anime. how sad. you need some sailor moon, precure, and cardcaptor sakura, in your life.

This is where I take the opportunity to debunk this really ridiculous argument about Edward Elric.
I’ve seen a lot of criticism for how emotional Ed is in this series. He doesn’t cry often, but he tears up and expresses a lot of negativity that doesn’t fall under your typical shonen macho bravado.
Edward Elric is a fifteen year old boy.
Edward Elric is a traumatized, injured, lonely, orphaned fifteen year old boy who has had to take on responsibilities that are far above his maturity level.
He has endured pain on the level of a soldier in a full-scale war and then some.
He has had flashbacks triggered, he’s lost two of his limbs, he has nightmares of blood and decaying flesh, he has lost his mother, he blames himself for what happened to his brother, he watched an innocent child die and blames himself for that too, he has just recently admitted he doesn’t have anyone older he can trust right now, he has nearly been murdered with knives and with amplified alchemy designed to blow his brain apart, he doesn’t have a home, he’s cut himself off from his remaining family besides Al for their own protection after seeing what dangers his job incurs.
He loses sleep on research. He carries limbs that are too heavy for his body mass. He is regularly called upon to solve problems that are better left in the hands of adults by other adults he distrusts because he feels like they will only exploit him.
All while trying to be the adult he is just not ready to be. Not yet.
You will never experience half of what this kid experienced. This orphaned, child soldier, amputee who is trying to save he and his brother’s livelihoods under corrupt authorities who’d kill him for stepping out of line.
He deserves to shed tears.
So, I’m rewatching s2 of yowapeda, and I think I found the exact moment when Imaizumi completey and absolutely falls head over heels for Naruko - that is, when he sees him climbing during the thrid day. I mean, you can pinpoint the exact moment his mind goes blank for a moment and then he realizes that he’s so fckn in love with the red flashy dork in front of him

Hi !! What are the best tips you can give for someone who is travelling alone for the first time?
Thanks anon. Ok this is going to be an insight into my mind (I consume a fair amount of True Crime). I've travelled alone quite extensively and here are my tips for staying safe:
Never tell a stranger/cab driver etc that you are alone- I always say I'm visiting someone or here for work. As a Londoner I'm allergic to small talk with strangers so I often deflect by saying I've got a headache and would like some peace.
If a child/woman/person approaches me claiming to be lost or in need in some way. I won't ever go with them anywhere, instead I will go into a busy bar/restaurant and ask them to call the local police. Or tell them it's not my problem.
Walk with purpose and try not to look lost if you can help it.
If you're in a hostel, Empty Aspirin cartons are a great way to hide money.
Take a travel debit card that is pre-loaded with a set amount of money. Leave it in your hotel room/in a secure location so you're never stranded without cash.
Check in with someone daily if you can - whatsapp, email, text etc.
Try to avoid getting drunk alone.
Honestly, my solo trips have been amazing and full of self discovery so don't be scared of it, just be reasonably cautious.
