Telling someone to touch grass is so much funnier on Roshar. Like,

YOU don't wanna live in Roshar. Not because of the fragile state most of the Kingdoms are. Or the very aggressive fauna. The weird flora. The extreme climate. The storms the size of mountains nor the constant wars between gods. The real issue is those dam spren telling the world how you really feel. Those fuckers call you out each time.

Archetypes Explained - The Hero

The Hero, is the poor soul who was just trying to live their life before the universe threw a flaming pile of responsibility at their feet. Now they’re forced to embark on some grand adventure, save the world, and, if they’re lucky, make it to the end without permanent emotional (or physical) damage.

We all know this character. We root for them, we stress over them, we scream at them when they make the worst decisions possible, but here’s the problem. Too many heroes are boring as hell. Why? Because they’re too perfect. Too noble. Too “I must do the right thing because it is my destiny” energy. And that’s not how real people work.

↠ So how do you write a hero that actually feels real?

Seriously, give them flaws—real ones. And no, “cares too much” or “too brave for their own good” do not count. I’m talking actual weaknesses. Maybe they’re selfish. Maybe they hesitate too much. Maybe they’ve got an ego problem. Maybe they make decisions that actively screw people over. If your hero never makes a mistake, they’re not a character, they’re a robot.

Then, give them something personal at stake. Saving the world is great and all, but why do they care? What are they really fighting for? Their family? Their sense of identity? The one person they can’t live without? If their motivation is just “because it’s the right thing to do,” you’ve written a motivational poster, not a character.

Let them fail. And I don’t mean one minor setback that they instantly recover from. I mean failure. Heartbreaking, humiliating, gut-wrenching failure that makes them question everything. Because that’s what makes us care. Watching a hero struggle, doubt themselves, and still get back up? That’s what makes them worth rooting for.

And finally—please—give them a personality. Heroes don’t have to be brooding warriors of justice with tragic backstories. They can be sarcastic, awkward, reluctant, reckless. They can start off as selfish and become someone better. They can be an absolute disaster who stumbles their way into heroism. Just… make them human.

So if you’re writing a hero, ask yourself: Would I want to have a drink with this person? If the answer is no, rewrite them. NOW...
