i know this was in no way thought about this deeply by the writers and was strictly a result of necessity, but the length of scully's chain for this necklace would have been choker-level tight on mulder if he'd left it as-is. the fit of it in these shots would mean he took her necklace and got a chain that would fit him comfortably so that he could keep her close while he did everything he could to find her. he bought a gold chain just so he could wear the cross of a god he doesn't believe in because to him, it has nothing to do with god, and everything to do with his love for scully...

and a bit of guilt sprinkled in for good measure.

i would like to propose a hypothesis that the “scully effect” extends beyond an increased number of women in stem. as a young woman in the humanities, discovering dana scully (& gillian for that matter!), and looking at her as a role model for confidence, professionalism, and owning your own intelligence has been genuinely transformative. i am so grateful for the ways in which this ‘scully effect’ has helped me grow into myself!
