*Patch Notes 8/22/23*

A lot has happened. Many improvements have been been made that probably deserve their own posts. Did a lot of back sliding, attempts at recovery, and more back sliding. Also kept forgetting this blog existed.

CURRENT GOALS:

Clean and organized apartment

Time and suitable environment to focus on art

Being caught up enough on responsibilities and housework that I can feel comfortable spending time on video games and anime

Making a less stressful environment for my cats

Time for and Accessibility of Proper Nutrition

Get to bed earlier

Get up when my alarm goes off

Toying with the idea of setting up an online shop for like stickers and junk

Stuff Done Yesterday & Today:

Clean and organized apartment

Stacked the white boards and cork boards that have been floating around the apartment since I moved in neatly behind the recliner in the living room. I won't have to move them again unless I'm (finally) putting them up.

Made progress cleaning in kitchen

Made progress cleaning in study

Slapped a label saying "SPARE PARTS" on a drawer of a plastic storage unit in my basement so, once I find where they are, all the little baggies of spare hardware/accessories/parts for various appliances and pieces of furniture (THAT I HAVE BEEN SO GOOOD AT LABELNG. WHERE ARE THEY?!) will have a home. Baggies Found: 5/??

Slapped a "MANUALS" label on another drawer so now I have a place for them too

Arranged the shelving units in the basement so I can actually see and access shit easily

Time and suitable environment to focus on art

Cleared off the folding table that's been piled with papers and junk for 6 months

Cleared off my desk

Cleared off most the floor of my study

Drew plans for a U-Shaped desk that I think would help. Not sure if I'm going for it. Won't have a chance to build it until late September anyway.

My current desk has a riser shelf that I took off a while ago, thinking it would give me more useable space (it did not). I have a worklight I bought at goodwill a couple weeks ago that I intended to use for a workbench I'm most likely not going to build. It just fits under the riser, but its power cord comes out the center of the back, which puts it at odds with the riser support bar. So I drilled a hole in the riser support bar. I don't think the bits I have are meant to be used on metal, but I got it to work somehow. And after some hack-sawing and filing, and some more hack sawing and filing because I didn't account for the nut at the base of the power cord, it works pretty well!

Rearranged my furniture a bit. Trying an L-shaped desk set up

Being caught up enough on responsibilities and housework that I can feel comfortable spending time on video games and anime

Put on an episode of anime while eating lunch

Finally tumbled and folded the sheets that have been in the dryer for, like, two weeks

Washed a load of darks

Making a Less Stressful Environnment for my Cats

Cleared floor space in living room, kitchen and study

Moved chair I was going to donate back into kitchen so they can sit with me instead of me moving them off my chair

Making effort to clean/rearrange things in a calmer fashion so Maou freaks out less

Time for and Accessibility of Proper Nutrition

Washed a shit ton of dishes, focusing on the takeout containers I use for ready-made meals

Cleaned the fridge out. Got rid of food that had gone bad (oh god it was gross) and washed off spills

Made a start on organizing cabinets so I can find the dishes and containers need when i need them.

Cooked rice, chicken, and vegetables and arranged them in microwavable containers so I can h eat them quick later

Get to bed earlier

Brought in water bottles from car and stocked under bed

Put empty water bottles in recycling

Cleared a bunch of stuff that's been covering the floor for ages

Moved my headboard power strip to the other side so I can have my white noise machine and bed lamp closer to my head

Get up when my alarm goes off

Set up an anime I really want to rewatch on DVD player in kitchen, so I can watch it while eating breakfast. Hoping this motivates me to get ouut of bed.

Logged into Crunchyroll on android box for the same reason. Looking for HiDive password.

Toying with the idea of setting up an online shop for like stickers and junk

Made a vague plan. Most of it depends on me actually neatly finishing art on purpose. Im good at making art. Finishing art neatly and on purpose are my weak points (My strong point is bullshit that looks pretty good). Should probably revisit this idea when I'm further along with "Time and suitable environment to focus on art"

*Patch Notes 07/21/23*

$5 of paid customization apps later, I have a keyboard that works the way it should and a launcher that supports widgets. I feel this should have been unnecessary, but if you're going to buy dubious off-brand android TV boxes, I guess you just kind of have to deal

Shelves and uprights are all varnished. Now I just have to make shelf supports and I'm gold. Not sure when I'm going to have time, but hopefully it'll happen soon. So much is happening.

*Patch Notes 07/19/23*

I've got the Android box for the To-Do list project. Turns out that TV boxes (or at least the one I got) are waaaaay harder to customize than tablets are? And also my physical keyboard doesn't work the same for it, so I have some stuff to iron out there. Squid and the Shimeji app work though, so the base functionality I need is there

Got all the materials gathered for my media shelf project.

My goal is to have a shelf that uses my apartment's vertical space to the fullest, has enough space for my entire collection, and has enough room for the collection to expand. Right now I have some dumpy little prefab shelves that are buckling under the weight of my manga collection and have DVDs piled high on top of them.

Been sanding and varnishing wood for the past 3 days. I hope to be finished with it by next week.

*Patch Notes 07/15/23*

Cleaned out old terrible food from fridge

Hacksawed off the top of a small shelf so it fits on my kitchen counter under the cupboards. I have a home for ziplock bags now!

I had to move 9000 dishes out of the way to get this picture. Found my bolt cutters by doing so

Updated my post-it note planner printable. Reworked design so challenges are at the bottom. Bottom date stamp is now even closer to the edge so I can stack more post-its on a page. Added "DECOMPRESS" back to the challenges section. Added more growth and decompression challenges to the RNG, removed challenges that weren't working out.

Yay. Someday I'll get the printable for this ready to share.

*Patch Notes 07/14/23*

Found a solution for the lack support for moving images in Squid. I can't do gifs, but I *can* install a Shimeji-ee app and have characters running around the screen. Seeing that out of the corner of my eye attracts my attention better than any gif could.

I also have a music playing at a low volume constantly. If I walk anywhere near the kitchen it feels like I'm entering a To-Do list encounter. OH! WAIT. [TASK: Make a playlist with BotW enemy encounter music and set up on tablet]

Found an Android-based box with an HDMI port as a possible lead for freeing up my tablet. It'd be nice to just have a dedicated unit sitting on my table to reduce set up time and steps. Price isn't bad either, like $40. I just need to determine if everything I need for this is doable with keyboard and mouse and no touch screen or stylus features.

*Patch notes 07/13/23*

Tried a new set up with the TV to-do list.

Tablet in desktop mode with a Google word doc and two separate gallery programs visible.

Result: The gif made it more noticeable and the to-do list was easier to set up, but the format of the document and the windowed layout made it harder to use. Seeing all my tasks in the old layout was way easier, so I'm going back to that until I think of something else.

Now I just have to find a way to do this so my tablet isn't constantly occupied.

*Patch Notes 7/12/23*

Sooooo... the white board was ineffective. It blended into the bakground within hours of setting it up Attempts to draw attention to it (putting a spotlight on it, setting alarms on my phone to look at it) were ineffective. So we gotta try something different.

I went thrift shopping a couple days ago and found a bunch of small TVs and came up with a plan for a new board. If the board is Lighted, Contains Interesting Images, and Makes Sounds; it should be harder to ignore. So I got one of the TVs and set it up where my whiteboard used to be.

This is my first attempt. I've hooked up my android tablet via hdmi and have Squid (a note-taking app) running. I have my tasks written and boxed in different colors to be more noticeable and a piece of blorbo fan-art to draw attention to the entire unit.

I crossed off each task as I got it done. It worked out pretty well? Got everything except two tasks which is pretty good for how I've been doing. The blorbo fan-art tactic worked, but I kind of wish Squid supported gifs. I think a moving image would catch my attention better.

*Patch Notes 7/05/23*

I bought a filing cabinet for 4 dollars.

It's a little janky and missing the rods to hang the file folders in its bottom drawer. But it's enough to test out an ADHD organization tip I found on Pinterest that I thought was mind blowing. Also acquired were a 25 pack of hanging file folders and a 10 pack of 2" wide expanding folders, both more expensive than the filing cabinet itself.

My goal was to replace one of the drawer carts in my study, because it's not good use of space for what it's being used for(storing spare planner pages). I further planned to get rid of the other one (paper and similar material storage) but decided that one's doing just fine as is.

Anyway, hanging files went in the top drawer and I started sorting planner pages into them. And then I realized that, since I switched planner styles a couple months ago, I didn't actually have that many planner pages. Most of them were (out)dated Daily pages that went straight in the bin. Most of the drawers were actually empty. And I have all these damn hanging files. It was very frustrating!

So I kind of started picking through whatever loose papers were in the room, including on a folding table that's been stacked high with various unsorted papers for roughly 6 months. I've been referring to it as the Table of Terror on my To Do lists, generally in an vague un-actionable task to "Deal with it" or "Sort it out."

I started taking papers off of it, tossing the ones that were clearly outdated or useless, and sorting the rest by hastily constructed categories into the hanging files. It was kind of cool how naturally it happened? This was not a project I intended to tackle tonight, but it's somehow mostly done.

I do have to label these (preferably before I forget what the categories are supposed to be) but holy shit, it's sorted. I can do stuff with these papers now.

This thing was piled a foot and a half deep. Now look at it.

Now here's the real neat thing about this filing cabinet thing. A lot of the things on that table weren't papers. They were just odd things that didn't have homes. A bunch of tools and supplies that are hard to categorized and store.

So. Those 2 inch expanding files? I opened those up and lined them in the bottom drawer of the cabinet. Suddenly all those odd things have homes. Oddly shaped envelope punching jig? Homed. Plastic tablecloth I use as drop cloth? Homed. Little camera tripod that's been floating around for ages? Homed.

Look at this shit. I could alphabetize this if I wanted. Astounding. Like, there's things I technically have organized that would be better off in here. I could fit all my stamp carving tools in one of these folders. All my clay tools in another. Almost regretting buying my big art supply drawers. Absolutely regretting buying at least one of them.

Anyway that's my night. Still have to draw and don't have time to play Zelda but WHOOOOOOO!!

Also got some spray paint I'd describe as "Persona 4 Yellow" that this thing will be getting a makeover with at some point. It was a toss-up been that and bright aqua. I cannot tolerate greige.

*Patch Notes 07/03/23*

I set up this white board about a week ago. It's on a plein-air easel I found at Goodwill for like $8, seated on some riser shelves on my kitchen table. Today I finally got around to writing stuff on it.

On the left is the current ideals I'm chasing and on right is a running to-do list. Also a bunch of leaves as as decorative border. It adds to the visual appeal which leads to me actually looking at my to do list. Hopefully this will prevent it from fading into the background.

*Patch Notes 7/01/23*

I bought a desk organizer at TJ Maxx the other day and I've decided to use it for Japanese study materials.

I've been studying Japanese for years off and on (mainly procrastinating and putting it off for various reasons). I've bought a ton of books for it but I've never made much headway because that requires sitting down and actually studying which my hyperactive ass is very bad at.

Anyway, I cleared off my desk and started setting this bad boy up. I started by collecting all my reference books and was struck by the realization that I do not remember buying, owning, or even knowing of the existence of a lot of these books. Like what the fuck have I been doing. I've (apparently) spent so much money on books I just forget I have. I know that, as a rule, I only buy reference material if I've found something useful about them, but boy howdy this can't have been worth the dollar amount. How many other areas of my life has this sort of thing been happening?

That aside, I got it set up with reference books, one volume of manga for reading practice, a box of flashcards, writing/drawing tools, a notebook, and bunch of sticky notes(both for studying and my planner)

Oof.

Remains to be seen if it helps. As it is, probably not because I don't have any concrete study plan and, as mentioned previously, sitting down and actually studying is something my hyperactive ass is very bad at.

Next Steps:

Make a study plan

Research self study plans

Go through the books, see what's good about them. Write that information down.

Maybe part with the less useful ones.

Maybe maybe set something up that's portable so my hyperactive ass doesn't need to sit down to study. The organizer can act as home base for my stuff

Revisit this in a month or two to make sure I'm actually doing something with this and it hasn't faded into the background

Moved refrigerator and kitchen table over so I can reach my kitchen's poorly placed light switch easier

Minor cleaning. Didn't feel minor but there's still stuff everywhere?

Some stuff off basement floor and onto the new shelves. No sorting system yet

Started a health log in a format I think will be easy to maintain. Hopefully it will make summarizing things for doctor appointments easier.

This project operates under the idea that a good living space for someone with ADHD should:

Keep things as visible as possible

Utilize organizational systems that are easy to maintain even if you fall behind in or are inconsistent with maintaining them

Reduce or simplify chores need to maintain the space

Be a place you enjoy living

Be a place of enrichment for you

Not actively depress or frustrate you

Be designed for the use of the people who live there, instead of what people who don't live there might think

What this looks like for me and what this looks like for you may vary.

I am going to romanticize the shit out of the concept of living in a place designed to accommodate me and my weird brain. I’m going to make it work and it's going to be wonderful way to exist and thrive.

It's also going to take a fuckton of effort to build up to. But as long as I keep taking steps, it will happen. My definition of "it" may change over time, but that's an expected part of the process.

I'm going to see which things work for me and which don't. There's no sin in trying something that doesn't work in the end. But I'm also going to cautious of chasing dead ends for too long (something I am unfortunately apt to do)
