The concept of black history is a joke in America. They substitute anything African about black heritage with oppression porn to remind us of our “place”. The idea of a strong black historical figure a lot of times isn’t some African revolutionary or king, it’s usually someone who has to endure horrifying discrimination for a shred of equality that we still don’t have. While yes, it is inspiring to learn about the great American leaders who fought for the civil rights of their fellow man, that’s American History not Black History. Slavery in the US is American History. The KKK is American History. Jim Crow is American History. When you divorce things like that from American History and file it under Black History you distance America (read:White America) from accountability and enforces very particular iconography for Black people in America; chains and firehoses. That’s how you get people who can look native and first generation Africans in the face, who look JUST like them, and not see themselves.

You guys, I reblogged this 2 days ago out of desperation. Today I was looking through my old wallet for coins to go to the vending machine because that’s all I can fucking afford. I haven’t touched this thing since July/ August. When I found a disappointing 15 cents in the coin pocket I went to the billfold to see if any coins were in there. That’s when I saw them. 5 crisp bills amounting to $22. I literally screamed and danced around my room out of joy before remembering that I’d reblogged this post.
