The Hamptons could not compare to home. In fact, he was more sure than ever that the Upper East Side couldn’t compare to anything about California. About L.A. The sand wasn’t right, the waves were pitiful and even the sun wasn’t shining the way it used to but then again, maybe that was just a reflection of his mood. A heavy feeling had taken over his chest. He was so goddamn homesick he wanted to scream. He missed his mom, his friends, playing football ‘cause he actually wanted to play and… And he missed her. Roni. They were so happy back home. The thing was, he didn’t know if that was because Juliette wasn’t back home or not anymore. He didn’t even know if 'Jessica Rabbit’ on her beach cabana was gonna be Roni, or Juliette. That only emphasized the kinda trouble he was in, didn’t it?

Relief washed over him though when he caught a glimpse of her red hair, flipping in that way she did and the rest of undeniable. Roni smiled but he could tell she wasn’t feeling it. Of course she wasn’t. Relief was replaced quickly by guilt and shame but somehow his feet were moving him toward her like they always did. What could he say? All Sam knew was that he didn’t want to lose her, that much he was sure of and the fact that she hadn’t yelled at him to leave (yet) could only be a good sign.

“Yeah. Jessica Rabbit, huh?” Of course. Only drawn bad. Married to a goofball. “They uh, really hype this place up. I mean, it’s nice and everything but it’s not… You know.”

Roni had hoped Sam had been the one to choose her and not the other way around. Jessica Rabbit had so obviously been her, but would that have been what he chose? These were the thoughts that stormed her brain at the view of him, the boy she once believed could do no wrong. How could that boy do the worst thing imaginable to you? Veronica was struggling for an answer of her own. And the cool, almost emotionless, exterior she wore was deteriorating by the moment. She was so exhausted. Sad. Betrayed.

She held an arm out of the shade they stood in, the sun enveloping it in a warmth she hadn’t felt in awhile. The only sense of warmth she’d felt since they’d moved from the golden coast. “Samuel-- Sam... The sun hasn’t rose for me in a long time. Everything here is darkness when I thought it would be perfection. It’s so, so dark.”

But she just couldn’t let it go. “Why would you both do that to me?”

There were noticeable differences. The sand between her toes wasn’t hot enough to run into the water to cool down. There wasn’t a boardwalk of people behind her, filled with a buzzing crowd of teenagers eating cotton candy and sporting belly button piercings. It was even chilly enough that she didn’t want to wear a swim suit. She loved the beaches home in California and The Hamptons couldn’t compare, but here she had Sam. That seemed to make up for all the differences in the world. And though her heart hurt when she glanced at him now, still reminded of the kiss between he and Juliette, Roni was going to push her way through the day. Like Georgina said earlier, did she wear this shade of lipstick for nothing?

“Touchdown.”

A smile was forced and she turned, flipping mermaid-like waves behind her as she waved at her boyfriend.

The flask made an appearance before Sapphire actually said anything to her. It was obvious that anyone who looked that hot and wasn’t taking the opportunity to showcase just that… Wasn’t having the best of days. Not that she really knew Veronica Ravenwood outside of the fact she was Juliette’s BFF turned enemy but Sapphire had already burned the Juliette bridge so. “It’s kinda gross but I think that’s the point.”

“We haven’t formally met.” Roni wasted not a second unscrewing the cap and taking a deep swig, instantly warming up from the inside out. “But I already love you more than anyone else I’ve met. You’re supposed to be the fun one, right? Sapphire.” There came drink numero dos and she passed the beautiful flask back over. That would hold her to a nice buzz for awhile, thank god. “You are formally invited to all of my future pity parties.”

It was official: no amount of hot-dog, popcorn or tamale were going to make Nate Archibald any less of a buzzkill. It felt like the Fairchild Ball had happened just hours ago for him and every time he found himself smiling or, god forbid, having fun- he remembered his mom at home with a hoard of lawyers he was pretty sure they couldn’t afford. He thought taking a break from the pug-filled limelight might help but even doing that he was interrupting someone else. Only he didn’t think Roni had noticed and usually she was all for elaborate greetings. “Roni…? I- Uh, can move if you want. If you wanted to be yourself or something.”

“Oh, hi Nathaniel.” Veronica perked up some. It was hard not to want to be the best version of yourself around the golden boy. “No, stay.” Were the two words she didn’t mean to come out as desperate as they probably sounded. “I could use the company of someone not too cheery.” By that she meant-- Well, everyone knew Nate’s current situation. “Misery loves company.”

Georgina was already entirely over this party. Gossip Girl had posted nothing particularly scandalous as of yet, Serena was busy fawning over her “besties” and pugs could only be cute for so long in her oh so humble opinion. Either way, she was busy staring at her phone (on Gossip Girl, funnily enough) when she realised who’s pity party she’d crashed. “Veronica Ravenwood? Wow, sorry but did you wear that shade of lipstick today so you could sit it by some- probably stolen- carnival stalls ‘cause I seriously doubt it.”

“These men don’t know their left from their rights. It’s no surprise not one can tear their eyes off the puppies for us, for moi. It’s almost sad.” Veronica had brushed up on her Upper East Side knowledge as any good player of the game would, so of course she knew who had graced her with their presence. “Georgina Sparks. I think we have a lot in common.”

“You look so much better than Serena today, if that’s what you’re asking. Don’t listen to the rumors I heard earlier.” Finally coming back down to earth and away from her thoughts, the first thing on Veronica’s mind was chaos. Why not start complete chaos?

“Do you mind if I sit here for a minute?” It only took a few seconds for Serena to realize that Veronica wasn’t listening to her. She didn’t know the girl very well (the entirety of their interactions could probably be counted on one hand), but part of being a better person meant paying attention to other people and noticing when they were upset. She hadn’t gotten very good at fixing things just yet, but that probably just meant she should keep trying. “Hey,” She said quietly, hoping to catch the attention of the redhead. “Do you want something to eat?”

Veronica, just brought out of deep thought, was genuinely surprised to see who it was speaking to her. “O-M-G. You’re Serena van der Woodsen. Huge fan. Seriously, your outfits are always so on point. Total fashion icon.” Roni stuck her hand out to shake the blonde’s, “I’m Veronica Ravenwood. Roni for short.”

After “speaking” to Juliette, Roni had gone to hide. Not literally, but she was avoiding her enemy and her boyfriend as well as she could. She’d even thought about running home now that gravity of Sam and Juliette kissing was finally hitting Veronica head on. So much so that she didn’t even hear the person sit beside her.

Juliette couldn’t help but smirk as Veronica acted out, she knew that she could get under her skin. “You aren’t ever going to make me do anything. You know those photos you have are pretty illegal for many reasons. Not the least of which being that I’m underage. So if show those photos to anyone ever again my famiy will destroy you. And old money always win.” She looked her down. “New money always forget the basics, don’t they. So please, pull another Regina George I would love put your family back into the trailer park they belong in.”

Veronica stood there silently, her nostrils flaring slightly out of anger. Her instinct was to look around and make sure nobody had seen. But they were in public, it had been expected. So, Juliette won this round and Roni feeling defeated, could only say one thing, “I’ll excuse myself. I need to go find my boyfriend, Samuel. Toodles.”

“That’s rich, considering you stole my boyfriend. And all the times you threw yourself at him.” Juliette rolled her eyes. “But I would love to give him another kiss. Maybe this time it won’t stop at a kiss. You obviously don’t satisfy him.”

“If you keep playing games, I’ll just have to finish your fun.” 

Roni quirked her head to the side, hating how easily Juliette could get under her skin. She was the only person who could. “Don’t you remember what happened in California? I’m here to live my best life with my boyfriend and if you want to keep interfering with that, I’ll just make you run again.”

Juliette looked around the event, no person drawing her attention in particular. “This should be interesting.” She huffed slightly smirking slightly.  

Maybe you’ll try to repeat the incident you and Sam had at the ball. If you’re as consistent of a whore like I believe you are, that is.
