Quick Dennis meta: Dennis is full of anxiety and trauma, and only wants the illusion of power (relatable) and he wants to be told exactly what to do so that he can behave in the right way and be praised for it, and have no responsibility for anything, including himself, while acting as if he's in charge (RELATABLE). In the golden age of macdennis, bossy!Mac gave him exactly that. Then Mac started trying to give Dennis what his behaviour suggested he wanted by becoming subservient to Dennis, so now Dennis is responsible for himself and his jackass friend, and now he's old and ugly and feels vulnerable and out of control, and it's sad because all Dennis really wants is to be taken care of, and all Mac wants is to take care of Dennis

frank and charlie barge into the back office, where mac jumps a little in his chair behind the desk. the two of them start going off about plans for dennis and dee’s surprise birthday and how it’s a huge secret. mac is struggling to keep a straight face. finally, they finish their thing and mac quickly shoos them away. as soon as the door closes, dennis pops up from under the desk and wipes his mouth. “do you think they knew i was here?”

mac and dennis show up late to a movie (the delay was dennis had to stop the car so mac could piss halfway there). they’re noisy as fuck even though the commercials are already playing. dennis gets pissed off when there’s people sitting in their seats (”why are they in our seats, mac?? it’s a monday night and there are plenty of empty seats. what the fuck!”). mac tries to assure him that it’s fine after the people don’t move, but dennis starts crying in the movie theatre because it’s just all so much and things are definetely not going according to the plan in his head that he had only told himself. but they’re those big recliner seats so mac gently pulls dennis towards one a few rows down and suggests they share one. so mac holds dennis close, and eventually dennis stops crying and watches the movie with his head on mac’s chest, and the stress fades, and he feels not completely better, but its enough.

i can’t find a way to not make this sappy and overdramatic so bear with me: despite the fact that i firmly believe that a) macdennis dated in s5 and b) dennis has slept with men before, probably even dated in college, i’m getting serious about my expectations. and my expectations are that they are going to go the route of “no he hasn’t.” thus there’s the possibility of out gay mac with newly gay dennis…who’s never done anything with dudes before….and when they kiss for the first time, dennis is marveling ‘cause he can’t believe he feels so good and this feels so natural…he’s like “damn mac what are you doing to me…” ‘cause he’s never felt anything like this when theyre barely doing anything…and mac has to stop and smile softly and tell him “no baby, this is how kissing is supposed to feel”

there’s a brief moment at the end of making dennis reynolds a murderer where charlie and mac cheerfully telling dennis about their idea of doing a series about whether or not dennis is a murderer and you can see how dennis looks genuinely hurt that his friends decided to portray him in this way.

there are no words said at that moment but you get why dennis has meltdowns, he doesn’t want to face his insecurities about himself and he’s covering them up in certain ways that even his friends have mistaken him for not having any emotions, and you later see in the gang tends bar that he’s so done with people thinking of him as a sociopath who makes you feel creepy and uncomfortable with no feelings at all but all of his meltdowns are hiding a guy who hates who he is, he just has such a fragile sense of self that sometimes even the shell he created around himself can’t protect him
