The names for the Triwizard Tournament are drawn on Halloween, with Ron expressing that he doesn’t believe Harry that night, and the first task is on November 25th, immediately after which Ron makes up with Harry.
The Trio break into the Voldemort-controlled Ministry in November, then travel for weeks before overhearing Griphook’s talk with Ted, Dean, and Dirk Cresswell which prompts the fight between Harry and locket-influenced Ron. The Silver Doe incident where Ron comes back occurs shortly enough after Christmas that it is still the Christmas holidays when the reunited Trio goes to visit Xenophilius, as Ron proclaims that “Luna will be home”.
All in all, the two fights that Ron ever has with Harry in the books last all of just barely two months versus years of fierce friendship, yet people will judge his character solely for the former while completely disregarding the latter. Two months out of a whole life.
He must have known I’d want to leave you. No, he must have known you would always want to come back.
Harry and Hermione stayed quiet, watching Ron think. Finally he said, “Now, don’t be offended or anything, but neither of you are that good at chess ― “
“We’re not offended,” said Harry quickly. “Just tell us what to do.”
Feel like Ron went through some real development to go from only caring about taking a pretty girl to the Yule Ball to advising Harry to date a girl for her personality instead of just her looks by the end of book 5, and it’s not all that talked about.
Ron was a good kid.

Ron Weasley {The King} | Harry Potter series - JK Rowling
“If you want to kill Harry, you’ll have to kill us too!”
first year;
ron weasley.
I’m here to give you a doodle of Ron and Rose escorting a spider out of her room. How’s your day going?
‘No,’ said Hermione shortly. ‘Have either of you seen my copy of Numerology and Gramatica?’
‘Oh, yeah, I borrowed it for a bit of bedtime reading,’ said Ron, but very quietly.
oh, of course, said ron, clapping a hand to his forehead. I forgot we’ll be hunting down voldemort in a mobile library.
Okay but here’s the thing - at eleven years old, Ron knows, within thirty seconds of looking at a baby, newly hatched dragon, what species it is. At eleven years old. The most reasonable explanation for how he knows this is Charlie. Because Ron is the kind of person who would learn all he can about what his loved ones care about because it matters to them, and they matter to him. Everyone says how Ron isn’t book smart, but I think it’s more a question of motivation. He can learn when he cares about it, and he cares about it if it matters to someone he loves. So Ron probably has boards of casual knowledge about Egypt, dragons, pranks & Hogwarts, and we know he knows a ton about Quidditch. Ron is loyal, but it’s also his tragic flaw. Part of why he feels so overlooked by his family is because he has nothing that’s his own. Everything he has or does, his brother’s have done first. Ron never bothered to find something of his own because he was too busy trying to love what his brothers loved. Ron shows he cares by paying attention, by noticing little things and learning things. But people have finite amounts of time, energy, and attention, and if he’s spending it all on his brothers’ passions, how is he supposed to develop any of his own? He doesn’t know what he wants to be after hogwarts because at fifteen he still has no idea what he loves.
This post kicked down my door, and punched me in the face with the feels.
MY BEAUTIFUL, PERFECT, PRECIOUS BOY
(he has chess though!! Don’t forget the chess!!)
But doesn't that mean, that when he learns all the things and stuff his family and friends love, he can and knows more than them?
Not necessarily. I think of it like this. My best friend hasn’t read the HP books, but she’s seen the movies (although not a ton). But she knows it’s really important to me, so she tries to learn and remember stuff about it. So like she knows the major plots, but not everyone’s name, and not some of the minor characters or subplots. But he might no more than them! Just like you can teach someone something and they can eventually become better than you. So not necessarily, but maybe!
Ron is one of those people who is a font of trivia and random knowledge with no place to practically apply it much of the time- that’s part of what makes him so charming and interesting to me. Like, people sometimes wonder ‘why does Hermione like him’- and I think that surprisingly wide amount of knowledge and hidden facets to him would naturally be a large part of it. He’s a bit of a ‘jack of all trades, master of none’ (except chess of course.)- that flexibility he has to flit around topics and interests is what makes him so very unique and endlessly entertaining. That’s why she engages with him so much in the series- he’s one of the few people who genuinely keeps up with her and cares to.
But back to what he’s taken in from his family. He’s not just taken in facts and knowledge. He has a bit of all the best traits of his family-
Arthur- kindness, empathy, enthusiasm, unflinching dedication to what’s right, intuitive
Molly- loyalty, caring, mothering tendencies, fearsome warrior
Bill- leadership, ability to see others perspective, rationality, protective
Charlie- adventurous, easy going, quidditch, caring about animals
Percy- smart, works hard for his goals, forthright, passionate
Fred and George- clever, funny, imaginative, daring, all-in
Ginny- defends people, brave, dedicated, insightful
Ron has this tremendous ability to love- and when you mix it in with all the above- oh man- what a great character. He’s so humble though! D: And honestly what you said about ‘ He doesn’t know what he wants to be after hogwarts because at fifteen he still has no idea what he loves. ‘
He doesn’t know what activity he loves as a career- because he’s dedicated himself to loving other people as his top priority. His dedication to Harry, Hermione, his family etc. That’s his number one priority in life- and so when faced with ‘what do you want to do with your life’- I honestly think his goal is to just be with those he loves and everything else is just gravy.
He falls into his career stuff by following loved ones who need his help- harry in aurors, george in shop- and then we as a fandom have basically decided he’d be a bit of a stay home dad for some of the time- and that just makes so much sense for what he most cares about.
He thought he needed to find satisfaction by having some individual skill/career/talent and being known - but in the end I like to think he grew the wisom to know that his satisfaction and true happiness come from the love and happiness he finds in his family- and being a jack of all trades was a good thing
