only 5 seconds
i wasn't ready for that..lol
Immediately recognized that look
Ain't I a stinker?
love the wild and powerful disrespect clark has for bruce. it's so good. like yes that is my bestie. yes I agree with you that he's a good man and in fact one of the world's greatest heroes. yes I care deeply about him and in some ways even look up to him. look me in the eyes. he's the dumbest motherfucker I've ever met.
in the dungeon you will have to face a monster with the nose of a tiger, the teeth of a tiger, the ears of a tiger the eyes of a tiger , the cheeks of a tiger , the neck of a tiger, the torso of a tiger, the arms of a tiger, the paws of a tiger, the belly of a tiger the back of a tiger, the the legs of a tiger, the claws of a tiger, the ankles of a tiger, the tail of the tiger, the mind of a tiger, and the power of a tiger
and the tongue of a toucan.
Don’t like that!
that’s a whole man.
you can't leave off the photo the sawmill worker took of the kiwi
Am I the only one who gets so sick of period dramas being judged on "historical accuracy" to the exclusion of everything else? I don't understand getting so caught up in the costume and production minutiae, as if it really matters to the story that, like, the seams on the underwear are all hand-sewn and the lighting is just the right shade of hazy-yellowish 18th-century candlelight to make everyone look jaundiced. And woe unto an actress if she had any cosmetic procedures, including on her teeth. And this is normally done to prop up the '90s adaptations, which were really just as "fake" as recent ones and aren't any more accurate. It seems like a toxic form of nostalgia.
Ummmm.... I like historical accuracy. I think it's really cool when they make clothes by hand. I love when they wear bonnets instead of beach waves. I want to feel immersed in the period when I watch a period drama. I also prefer being able to see, so I don't mind better lighting, but on the whole, what's the point of watching a period piece unless it's period? Just watch a modern then?
As for the actresses, Karolina Żebrowska has a really good and probably the first non-sexist take I've seen on the "iPhone face" problem:
But of course, none of the aesthetics matter if your script sucks. I'll take bad hair over a bad adaptation which is why I don't mind the clearly 1970-ness of Persuasion 1971 (it's the hair).
So, no, I don't find this annoying or toxic at all. I love historical accuracy. I love accurately weird hair and accurate bonnets and clothes that don't fit modern tastes and I don't think the 90s was better at it. Emma 2020 did a great job and took so many of the clothes from extant garments and fashion plates.
I guess find another inbox that will be more in agreement with you. I don't know how someone would get a vibe from my blog that I'm not into historical accuracy...
Edit: I can enjoy a Bridgerton twist on history sort of thing, I think sometimes those can be really fun. But generally.
A few Team Avatar reminders (og series) because I think people tend to confuse canon and fanon a little too often:
- Aang was very mature and sensitive for his age (as he was forced to be). Most adults don’t have as strong and morally correct conviction as him, let alone most twelve year olds.
- Katara was a child. Regardless of how mature and strong she was, she was a little kid and a victim of the war, just like every other kid in the series.
- Sokka was incredibly smart, like ridiculously so (keep in mind he’s 15-16), and likely one of the smartest characters we encounter in atla. There are countless times the team would have been absolutely cooked without him (in most episodes, yes).
- Toph doesn’t hate being feminine, she hates being forced into a box. While she presents as a tomboy, the show also acknowledges her want to be taken seriously as a girl.
- Zuko is not reasonable or particularly smart. Most of his descisions are made based on emotion and his feelings in the moment. He’s not stupid at all, but he’s very much a passionate guy rather than a thinker (literally what his entire arc is based around, and imo what makes his arc that much better. He has to learn to he less impulsive).
Wait wait. I just saw the clip of Iroh going over the elements and
“Water is the element of change. The people of the water tribe are capable of adapting to many things”
I have always thought of this with Katara who literally set out to punch outdated traditions in the face and was of course a water bender. I forgot about Sokka!
He went full inventor! He overcame is bigoted beliefs! Oh I love this! The elements aren’t just about the bending and how they use them, it’s also how the nonbenders internalize the culture!
I low key want to go over the nonbender characters now and see how much they tie to their nation’s elements.
Also “they have a deep sense of community and love that holds them through anything” when Sokka and Katara are the one set of siblings that work together and their family is the only one shown that is consistently there for each other. Oh that’s so sweet. They fight like mad sometimes, but they’ve got each other’s backs. Episode 1 Katara says she’s going on an insane mission to save the Avatar and Sokka’s there with a canoe to chase a warship with. Katara definitely has a more central role but Sokka is there to tie the team together as a strategist and support Katara as her brother and it’s so sweet.
queer muppet moments i would make happen if i was in charge of the muppets:
the electric mayhem (minus animal bcs hes their kid) arent a polycule, theyre monogamous. but specifically they break up and date each other one at a time. they have a chart.
animal is genderfluid. this is mentioned exactly once bcs kermit calls her he and she starts yelling "SHE/HER!" kermit corrects himself and the show goes on
rizzo made out with gonzo once but he still considers himself straight bcs gonzo is not a guy, he's a whatever. gonzo agrees with this
uncle deadly dated tim curry. it did not end well.
actual emotional scene of gonzo talking about how he feels abt gender. no jokes.
kermit: no matter what, gonzo is still gonzo, and we're always going to support gonzo no matter what gonzo decides- gonzo: kermit. i still use he/him
statler and waldorf wedding episode. theyre divorced by the next
beaker trying to ask bunsen out on a date. in the end it turns out bunsen thought they'd been dating for years.
miss piggy hanging out with drag queens
related, miss piggy starting to present butch and kermit being Really Into It. hes embarassed abt it
pepe begins a story with "when i was a little girl...."
janice decides to start using just she bcs "like, i could never be her"
rowlf mentions having a husband. even kermit is like "??? since when??!"
actually i change my mind. genderfluid animal is mentioned a second time when dr teeth is calling for instrument and mic checks, he turns to animal and yells "animal! pronoun check!" "HE/HIM" "alright!"
this is the one meme that manages to age like a fine wine
The real problem with both "Persuasion" 2022 and Mansfield Park 1999 is that they didn't just change Anne Elliot and Fanny Price, they turned the main characters into people to whom the story could not happen. I do not believe that "Anne" 2022 would have been persuaded to give up Wentworth by her family. She's just not the kind of woman who would be. There was no reason for her and Wentworth to not get back together almost the moment they saw each other, because her personality was so different that them staying apart was illogical.
Jane Austen, whose personality was bestowed on "Fanny" 1999, would probably not have survived at Mansfield. She'd have been sent packing to Portsmouth years ago. She would have gotten in a fight with Mrs. Norris. Fanny Price's personality is just as vital to the story as her being pushed down by abuse. A different personality would make her into Jane Eyre and Jane Eyre famously did not get to stay with her wealthy relations long term.
So often, the events of the story are very tightly tied to the personality of the characters, which is why alterations to the character ruin the story. P&P 2005 gets away with making Darcy shy and Elizabeth more angry because that story can still be achieved with those traits. It's less interesting than canon Darcy's arrogance and snobbery, but it works. A snarky Fanny Price makes the story fall apart. Anne Elliot despising her family makes her story illogical.
You cannot just take a completely different person, throw them into a story and expect it to happen in the exact same way. It wouldn't.
WATCH TILL THE END
And then imagine every church-going wife shooting a pointed look at their husband.
I teach this in my AP art history class. 😂 in fact the pieces that are part of the exam have a few erotic pieces with interesting histories 🤷🏻♀️
34 and ready to score!

Hell Song
Just introduced my fiancee to this masterpiece and watched her expression cycle through all 5 stages of grief in rapid succession
I have long held that this song should be performed by David Byrne, I think he could really bring it someplace special
Oh, okay. I see. You think this has nothing to do with you. You go to your closet and you select out, oh I don’t know, that gaslight gatekeep girlboss meme, for instance, because you’re trying to tell the world that you think modern feminism has been co-opted by corporations. But what you don’t know is that that meme is not from Instagram, it's not from Twitter, it's not from Tiktok, it’s actually from Tumblr. You’re also blithely unaware of the fact that in January 2021, Tumblr user missnumber1111 posted, "today's agenda: gaslight gatekeep and most importantly girlboss." And then I think it was a-m-e-t-h-y-s-t-r-o-s-e, wasn’t it, who reblogged it with an image of the phrase edited over a piece of "Live, Laugh, Love" wall art? And then gaslight gatekeep girlboss showed up in the feeds of eight different Twitter repost accounts. Then it filtered down through Instagram and then trickled on down into some tragic “alt side of Tiktok” where you, no doubt, fished it out of some clearance bin. However, that meme represents millions of notes and countless Tumblr users and so it’s sort of comical how you think that you’ve made a choice that exempts you from Tumblr when, in fact, you’re wearing the meme that was selected for you by the people in this room. From a pile of “stuff.”
I swear this is how I feel every time I see a Tumblr screenshot out in the wild
