Don't date a girl who travels
"Don’t date a girl who travels
She’s the one with the messy unkempt hair colored by the sun. Her skin is now far from fair like it once was. Not even sun kissed. It’s burnt with multiple tan lines, wounds and bites here and there. But for every flaw on her skin, she has an interesting story to tell.
Don’t date a girl who travels. She is hard to please. The usual dinner-movie date at the mall will suck the life out of her. Her soul craves for new experiences and adventures. She will be unimpressed with your new car and your expensive watch. She would rather climb a rock or jump out of an airplane than hear you brag about it.
Don’t date a girl who travels because she will bug you to book a flight every time there’s an airline seat sale. She wont party at Republiq. And she will never pay over $100 for Avicii because she knows that one weekend of clubbing is equivalent to one week somewhere far more exciting.
Chances are, she can’t hold a steady job. Or she’s probably daydreaming about quitting. She doesn’t want to keep working her ass off for someone else’s dream. She has her own and is working towards it. She is a freelancer. She makes money from designing, writing, photography or something that requires creativity and imagination. Don’t waste her time complaining about your boring job.
Don’t date a girl who travels. She might have wasted her college degree and switched careers entirely. She is now a dive instructor or a yoga teacher. She’s not sure when the next paycheck is coming. But she doesn’t work like a robot all day, she goes out and takes what life has to offer and challenges you to do the same.
Don’t date a girl who travels for she has chosen a life of uncertainty. She doesn’t have a plan or a permanent address. She goes with the flow and follows her heart. She dances to the beat of her own drum. She doesn’t wear a watch. Her days are ruled by the sun and the moon. When the waves are calling, life stops and she will be oblivious to everything else for a moment. But she has learned that the most important thing in life isn’t surfing.
Don’t date a girl who travels as she tends to speak her mind. She will never try to impress your parents or friends. She knows respect, but isn’t afraid to hold a debate about global issues or social responsibility.
She will never need you. She knows how to pitch a tent and screw her own fins without your help. She cooks well and doesn’t need you to pay for her meals. She is too independent and wont care whether you travel with her or not. She will forget to check in with you when she arrives at her destination. She’s busy living in the present. She talks to strangers. She will meet many interesting, like-minded people from around the world who share her passion and dreams. She will be bored with you.
So never date a girl who travels unless you can keep up with her. And if you unintentionally fall in love with one, don’t you dare keep her. Let her go."

Rain season Driving on this so called road is one thing but if walking is your only means of transport it becomes a problem. Goodbye shoes, you will never be the same again. Time for some gumboots!

Crush it
Late one afternoon Rose called me to come see what she was doing. As I walked out there she and her niece were pounding maze. This seemed so primitive, surely there had to be an easier, more effective way of doing this. But no this is how they do it here. The traditional way.
I stood there in ore of how powerfully and rhythmically Rose did this. Even the little girl, it was like second nature to them. She told me to give it a try, just making me admire them so much more, I was useless and definitely didn’t have the strength. After a good laugh Rose took over again tossing the pole above her head, clapping her hands, catching the pole and bringing it down with force to crush the maze.
Once she had done this for a while, she put the crushed maze into a flat basket, tossing it up to let the small pieces get swept into the bucket below by the breeze. The big remaining pieces we put back and crushed some more.
Smokey Water
Coming from South Africa we have the luxury of opening a tap and being able to drink the water in most of our country. If not there will be a big sign saying “This water is not suitable for human consumption”.
Well not here, In the Pare Mountains the Ntenga sub village, where we have been staying has only had running water for 5 years. A strange thought. If they needed water for anything from cooking to cleaning, they would have to walk down to the river or their closest water source to fetch it. Which involved a bucket on their heads! This amount of water would have to suffice unless you were willing to make another trip down.
This is not the end of the situation, Tanzanian water is not suitable for drinking so next step you would have to boil it in a pot on the fire to ensure you do not get sick. Boiling the water is still the only way the Pare people can ensure they will not drink contaminated water, leading to the horrible smoke flavored water one drinks around here.
A mile in his shoes
On our trip to Ntenga village we passed many kids probably aged between 6 and 10 walking up the mountain with bags on their heads. Oblivious to the contents I asked Seraphine what they were carrying and where they were coming from.
He simply explained that these kids had gone down to the lowlands to buy corn or rice for their families. Life is different here, parents work the land and children are left to fend for themselves and do things we find hard to understand.
Not many of us would be able to do that long steep walk with a 10kg bag on our heads but these little guys do. Their strength is inspiring.
Break Down
emotionally and physically exhausted
Why am i doing this to myself, was pretty much the only though in my head as we reached the summit. Frustrated and sleep deprived i sat down after the torturous bus ride. Not knowing that i would spend the rest of my day waiting for the car to be filled that we could leave for the mountains.
Being followed and looked at by pretty much every person in the area as they tried to sell me something or convince me to go on a safari. To top it off a man decided to sit at the table next to ours and torture me with his "marry me".
Eventually about 5 or 6 hours later the Landy had the sufficient 16 people to cram in and drive us up to the Pare Mountains. About halfway into our journey the Landy was overheating, so as everything else in Africa we gave it time. Stopping at a waterfall and letting the engine cool as the driver put stones behind the wheels (no handbrake) and poured some water over the steaming engine.
Natural body lotion
As one of my passions is healthy living, i have been doing so reading about the chemicals that get put into every cosmetic product we so easily apply to our precious bodies.
This brings me to my new hobby! Making natural lotions ans scrubs. So far all of them have been lovely and the best part is combining essential oils to create a scent you enjoy.
Very simple recipe:
Shea butter, coconut oil, bees wax and essential oils
Golden Tree Snake better known as Flying Snakes
During my recent visit to Thailand we spent some time on Bamboo Island. I encountered one of these gorgeous snakes coming down from the forest to the rocks on the shoreline while taking a lonesome stroll.
Unfortunately i had to download a picture- I was too slow for this quick creature!

Beautiful words by a beautiful man
"Do you still drink tea, even though you used to hate it. Do you still buy Cherry Menthol airwaves because you love the way they smell. Every time you see her face, do you hope she is happy. You realize that you would give anything to go back an change how things turned out, but at the end of it all you realize, she is happy without you." anonymous ex-lover
MADIBA PILLOW
After spending a day at the stadium in Soweto at the Nelson Mandela memorial, we also decide to go spend a day in Vilikazi street visiting the original home of the Mandela family.
I bought this beautiful peace of fabric from a street vendor and decide to make a pillow. A reminder of what this incredible man lived for and what we as individuals should strive towards.
May the memory live on
