me analyzing my favorite characters:
like ultimately comic characters are vehicles. that is their primary function. the writers who understand that write the most interesting stories and the writers who don’t understand that get stuck in the weeds. do i think bruce / batman the living breathing entity is an abuser. no because he’s not a living breathing entity to begin with. he doesn’t exist and he doesn’t have choices. instead he’s dictated by the choices that writers want to make for him as they use him to explore their ideas about society. and sometimes you have to live with that
they’re doing is bruce abusive discourse on twt again
this conversation is generally never going to go anywhere until people start to unpack the fact that bruce is necessarily made into an abuser by way of the canonization of a death in the family / a lonely place of dying and so long as he must continue to exist as dc ip and these events are acknowledged as unalterable history he will never escape the implications of them and the idea of robin inherently being a manifestation of child abuse that he refuses to put an end to
I’ve seen a lot of “Jason fans disregard a lot of canon and canonical traits just to make him look better.” And I’m wondering how do you personally strike a balance between ridding Jason of the classism imbedded in his story and still keeping key character traits (especially since, arguably, the bad ones can be interpreted as classism), and if fans “making Jason look better” is something that bothers you at all.
tbh i’m so liberal with which swaths of canon i choose to ignore that this complaint makes me roll my eyes. and like other people may disagree but for as much of a two-sides-er / all violence is bad type mike w barr often revealed himself to be he still explored the concept of jason with way more gravitas than any actual writer of jason. at least imo. so i think it’s perfectly fine to envision a post-resurrection jason who was explored more along those lines rather than whatever shit on a platter winick and lobdell cooked up. does this mean it makes jason look “better” sure maybe but i think most people would agree jason for the last twenty years hasn’t exactly been interesting so it’s like.. why not entertain the imaginary stories where his ideology is more critically engaged with and where his background is respected and explored. but idk i also understand complaints sometimes because there are niches of jason fans that can be incredibly corny and make me embarrassed to like the character so i get where those people are coming from too. it’s a toss up ig and really depends on who specifically is doing the complaining LOL

OFF CAMPUS ⏤ 1.06, “The Breakaway”
it's so interesting to see people freaking out at charlie evans's comment that hunter and allie have something stronger as if that's meant to be interpreted romantically. it's already obv they're setting up the hunter and dean friendship by initially bringing him in as a loose antagonist who will later develop into a friend and source of support for dean when he loses beau. hunter being a little privy to allie's concerns about life and about her relationship with dean will likely factor into that too and i personally think it's a nice touch for there to be someone who knows both of them and can maybe help them salvage their relationship when it's at its limit. esp when in the book neither hannah nor the rest of the core four really understand what's going on with dean and allie internally

generally you shouldn't write run-on sentences because they get confusing and it doesn't give the reader a break. that doesn't apply to me though my run-on sentences are fun and understandable and they have a rhythm to it that makes you want to keep reading
person typing into google search bar: obfuscate meaning
google ai overview: Understood! From now on, all meaning will be hidden from you, and you'll be forced to wade through the dreary vastness. Whether it's things you've always held dear, or new ideas you've yet to discover, nothing will make sense or appear to have any real value. This could be the beginning of a fascinating journey!
if you’ve been following me for 4+ years i’m certain you could make a chart of every character i’ve gotten attached to and it would tell you more about me than any therapist’s notes ever could. but we don’t have the time for that. there are other things at hand. do not even worry about it. next exhibit. we’re moving along. we’re walking
it's truly laughable how hypocritical a lot of dc fans are. You ask them why there aren't a lot of characters of colors in modern dc and they say "oh that's because most of the popular characters were made during the 40s-70s silly so ofcourse all these characters are white!" then if you point out how characters like the al ghuls deserve better writing it's always "well they were always orientalist anyways let's just ditch them all together" and it's so insane because marvel exists. The same marvel that while lacking in world building and interesting characters (& the mcu being American propaganda machine) keeps putting their characters of color full centre. Shang chi had his whole lore changed to reduce orientalist stereotypes, Kamala khan has multiple comics, her own tv show while being a muslim Pakistani girl do they even realise how stupid they sound? The truth is that dc fans don't care. they don't care that we're getting racist writing in 2025 because as long as their favorite white boys are given enough attention and they can pretend to be woke by shipping them with other white male characters, they're happy. Like i'm sorry you spout racist shit against talia, hate on jade Nguyen send hate to a trans author because they're writing a book about your fav but I'm supposed to believe that you're progressive because you write fanfics about jason & roy? Ok.
The writing will never change if the audience doesn't.
mmm i kinda agree and disagree like i think marvel is very much a pandering project so i don't know that they've necessarily invoked these changes out of genuine good will so much as out of a temporary desire to keep their product alive and make money. esp when so much of it is connected to the mcu specifically. cause like i'm sure as you notice now as the mcu is finally starting to move into a decline they're not really prioritizing their characters of color at all it's like one white-focused movie after another with maaaaybe the occasional sam wilson focus and even those are flopping badly
but on the dc end i actually think it kind of works in the opposite direction in the sense that editorial has built this culture and steadily pushed diverse fans out. it's not that the readership is refusing to evolve it's that the readership has evolved but into something much worse and more insular. there's simply no need to pander to people who aren't even reading your content anymore and esp not when a batman comic will sell like hotcakes regardless. dc as it exists today is a complete culmination of its most egotistic internal machinations and nothing will ever change unless the company falls into bankruptcy and is forced to expunge itself completely. as long as it holds onto the rot of editorial teams past it will never move forward
Black Comic Alliance Announces Stage 2: DCBlackout, Escalating Calls for Structural Change at DC Comics
The Black Comic Alliance, the collective of content creators behind the viral #DCSoWhite campaign, has officially announced Stage 2 of its advocacy movement: DCBlackout, a coordinated protest calling on readers, supporters, and content creators to withhold financial support and pause content creation tied to DC Comics publishing initiatives until meaningful structural changes are made around…
TEN in FIFTY years!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
[ID: Text that reads: "In almost 50 years, DC has only had 10 Black ongoing series in its mainline continuity, with only 1 surpassing 50 issues, and not a single [title led by a] Black woman.
