The problem with the manic pixie dreamgirl trend in media is that it trains men to assume every girl they pass with a pretty dress, unusual hair, and sparkly eye-liner is some kind of deep and quirky and paradoxical nymph, which is complete erasure of girls like me, who are absolute gremlins.

There’s a certain point in conversations with guys when you can tell that’s what he’s thinking. He fell for the sparkly nails and the off-the-shoulder top and he’s expecting you to tell him how your dream is to bike across France with just the clothes on your back. How you like art museums because they feel like the beautiful preservation of long-dead artists’ souls. How you believe humans evolved sight in order to appreciate the infinitely unreachable cascade of stars above.

And at that point you’ve already lost. There’s no graceful way to clarify that you’re actually just a gremlin in a sundress, which you got for $14.99 on the clearance rack at Old Navy while trying to buy socks. That you actually don’t know anything about philosophy or whimsy or world-travel you get anxious taking the subway anywhere new. That you actually really have to go because you already have plans for the evening of lying in a blanket-burrito in bed watching a 49 minute Youtube video review of an anime you’ve never heard of.

I just marathonned through all of Kitchen Nightmares US and let me tell you… US Gordon Ramsay is not that terrifying. Honestly, he really only yells when people don’t listen to him when he speaks normally or when he needs to express the gravity of something (like contaminated food). Even in Hell’s Kitchen his yelling is because people don’t listen to him when he speaks normally. The main difference between British Gordon Ramsay and American Gordon Ramsay are the people he’s talking to.

I always get so fucking mad when I remember that it’s actually a 16-year-old Algerian girl who influenced BOTH Picasso and Matisse. and. I see some people saying “this is a joke” and I just want to say IT DOESN’T MATTER IF IT’S A JOKE

How do you think Jewish people, people of color, LGBTQ+ people, etc feel they see a bunch of white men gleefully performing the nazi salute? Do you think that makes us feel safe? Or do you think it makes nazis feel safer about doing the nazi salute, because they can just dismiss it “as a joke” if they’re criticized?

Richard Spencer, the nazi who keeps getting punched, was videotaped saying “Hail Trump!” as the supporters in the crowd did the nazi salute. People to this day are still doing it sincerely and it is still hurting people.

It’s not a joke. It’s absolutely abhorrent and should be treated as such.

Not to distract from this, but in Baltimore last night, a man stood up in the balcony and screamed “Heil Hitler! Heil Trump!” And did the salute during intermission of Fiddler On The Roof, knowing the Hippodrome would be full of Jewish people coming to see a play about Jewish people.

People cried. People were triggered. People assumed they were going to get shot. In the end he was just thrown out, which upsets me because he should have been held in jail for causing mass panic akin to falsely yelling “Fire” in that theater.

So I had a job interview today and there was a dude in the waiting room who was chatting up every AFAB person in the waiting room whether they responded or not, and kept going “Hey I’m real good at Origami Swans you want one?” and then writing his number on sticky notes before making paper cranes and handing them to his latest target before turning his attention to the next lady in his vicinity. A little sad, a lot annoying, but unlikely to be dangerous. Whatever.

Dude gets to me. We have half a conversation where he asks me personal questions and I don’t look up from my phone. I get my “Swan”. I’m the last AFAB person in the room so he’s kinda sitting there.

I get to a post about a friend needing moral and/or spiritual support before a medical procedeure, so my ADHD ass goes Oh hey, we have an animal effigy we could sacrifice to the relevant gods! So I take out my lighter and burn the swan roughly 23 seconds after the dude gave it to me, and crush the ashes in my hand because I belatedly realize there’s no sink for me to throw this in. Oh well. Purell the ashes off.

I look up. Dude, and everyone else in the waiting room is staring at me.

“You, uh. Smoke?” Dude tries.

What I Meant To Say: “No I just carry a lighter as a holdover from survival camp as a kid, and if I’m wearing synthetic fabrics that start to ravel, I can use the flame to melt them a bit so they stop.”

What I Actually Said: “No I just have one in case I need to set something on fire.”

I put the lighter away. The hiring manager comes out and calls my name. I go back and have what I think was a reasonably sucessful job interview. I come back out.

Dude, and half of the other candidates are GONE.
