A direct sequel to this by @ohwait-shesinspace

Im rewatching project hail mary bc i just finished the book and i noticed smth kinda cool
This is fromthe beginning of the movie, where Grace is going through the crews belonging. While looking through Yao's pictures we get this short clip with Yao front and center, joking with both Ilyukhina and Dubois with Grace and Stratt among the crowd behind them.
This is cool just because its the Very First Time we see Stratt in the entire movie (which is why it caught my attention in the first place!) but whats even COOLER is...
Logistics of a snake having a three forked tongue...
So a snakes tongue is interesting in that it is a natural formation of biangulation(1). Each side of the tongue gathers odor molecules and if one side catches chemical signals like pheromones, the snake can determine the location of prey or predators. To do this, they have an organ on the roof of their mouth called a Jacobson's Organ(2) that is specially designed to detect and analyze chemical signals.
Now, imagine with me a snake-like alien. Long tail, reptilian face, scales; basically a humanoid snake with arms (for the sake of simplicity). Of course, there would be differences--et tu a three way split tongue.
Maybe it helps detect different directions for triangulation, since these aliens are capable of better reach than snakes. Or, maybe, they can sense specific chemicals that the other two can't?? It could be this alien's version of the Jacobson's Organ, replacing the stationary one of snakes for the benefit of having a flexible sensor.
Also, it could have nothing to do with the VNO. Maybe, it has a paralytic property for the more difficult prey. Maybe it has some special function that allows the aliens to process/taste other things like herbs, allowing the alien to be omnivorous or even entirely herbivorous. There are so many things it could be used for.. it's hard to decide which one I like most.
1.) using 2 Absolute points to determine the position of 1 Variable point on a 2D plane
2.) the common name for the Vomeronasal Organ/System (VNO)
Humans getting crazy protective about Earth
Not in a military way, but in the way you get when someone insults your best friend or sibling.
Sure, Earth is a bit of a shitpit and tries to kill everything on its surface all the time and is slap bang in the middle of the Space Boonies with fuck all else around except MORE deadly stuff, BUT THAT’S OUR HOME. YOU KEEP HER NAME OUTTA YOUR FUCKIN’ MOUTH.
Human: Yeah, Earth’s just a massive dumpster fire, but once you look past the wonky axis and viruses and terrible people and numerous crises going on all at once, it’s a pretty decent place to set up shop.
Alien: Yeah, like I’d ever want to visit your shithole of a planet.
Human: *deathly serious* Call my home a shithole again and I will cook and eat your organs...
Alien: *genuinely shook* Stars above…
I often wonder what happened to authors of unfinished fanfictions.
I hope they’re having a nice life
we absolutely are not and that unfinished fic haunts us to this day
Reblog if that unfinished fic haunts you to this day
Human Quirks for Non-Humans to discover
the chain reaction a single yawn can cause
the sense to recognize something that looks human but is not quite human (uncanny valley)
getting songs stuck in their heads
the urge to sneeze but being unable to do so
not being able to breathe from laughter sometimes
the reactions caused by tickles
acting fairly casual about pain in their most vital body parts (head)
neurodivergent symptoms as a whole
“I want to write a fic about this but I don’t think anybody will be interested in it” ummm hello excuse me ma’am what do you mean you don’t think anybody will be interested in it??? YOU. YOU ARE INTERESTED IN IT???? write it because YOU are interested in it and YOU want to write about it. fanfic writing should always be first and foremost about YOUR enjoyment, not other people’s.
I’ve seen the Jabber gives Zanka a piece of Mankira as like a sign of commitment thing a few times but like there’s not much that can be done for him getting a piece of Assistaff in return and then it hit me — What if they do engravings? Zanka’s name carved on Mankira insides and Jabbers on Lovely Assistaff’s wood, they would be making scars onto each other’s souls.
what if on the ground putting your signifigant others name on your instrument is a cultural tradition for announcing your relationship and/or proposing?? like a promise/wedding ring or smth?
might be a culture difference between the ground and the sphere.... maybe Rudo was raised on the idea of proposing with a ring and so when he sees Jabbers name carved into Zanka's staff from a distance, they get into a fight abt it and then he asks Enjin who bursts out laughing...
excuse my rant i may have gotten a lil carried away ahah
TLDR; the early relationship bt Sanji + Zeff has a lot more importance than you'd think, especially in that the Baratie is our first exposure to what Family looks like in the world of One Piece. This inspires a certain subconscious understanding that gets built on as we advanced further into the story.
The Baratie is where I first found myself falling in love with One Piece.
It's where we truly begin to see what is to come, where Oda begins the real groundwork of what One Piece will (and has) become.
From the first on-sea battles and a brief glance at the power scaling, to the near future of the Grandline and the far future of Zoro's ambitions, to the emotional depth of the main AND side characters, to the ideals of the world vs the ideals of our protagonist(s), and so much more.
To this day, maybe 10 years after I first saw the Baratie for the first time, it has remained one of the most substantial and meaningful arcs to me. I still get teary eyed when I see Gin or the scene of them lying to Sanji about his food...

If you come across anyone who starts off with "Scientists don't want you to know..." you need to understand that they're lying. They're completely full of shit and working a grift.
Because they've never met or spoke with a scientist.
Scientists WANT YOU TO KNOW. Scientists want you to know SO MUCH. Scientists would be THRILLED to teach you EVERYTHING they know in EXPLICIT DETAIL. Scientists LOVE to share information and their findings and their theories. They don't want to hide anything, ever. They are SO HAPPY to share.
if you read about any biology you can quickly lose touch with what is astonishing and miraculous vs what is mundane, from animals that steal chloroplasts to become photosynthetic, to cloning technology being old hat, to trees that didn’t biodegrade for tens of millions of years, to naturally occurring lateral gene transfer between vastly different species, to the creation of gametes from adult cells, to the ability of some cancers to induce blood vessel growth, to desert shrimp that lie dormant for years, to the sensitivity of human touch receptors, to the fact that human hardware has a latent ability to see UV but their corneas block those wavelengths, to birds that echolocate and live in caves, to human skin being covered in enzymes that destroy RNA, to individual trees becoming genetic tapestries branch by branch, to life forms that gain energy from the electron potential of metals in their environments, to plants that recognize their siblings and adjust their behavior accordingly when growing next to them, to metamorphosis
which is to say. All of it is miraculous. and all of it is mundane. biology is Chaos vs. Order locking horns forever
