Looking for stories/advice on getting legally married a while before the wedding? My boyfriend and I have talked about getting legally married shortly after getting engaged so we can close the distance and get BAH, but we want to keep being married on the DL and just act as if we're only engaged until we actually have our wedding, probably a year or so later. Just wondering who has done this, who you told, when you told them, and how people responded to it?
Getting married to 1.) Collect BAH, and 2.) to close the distance are not very good reasons. I don’t want to come off as harsh, but more realistic. There are many girls who do what you are stating, but it just doesn’t look good. I’m sure you have other reasons for doing it, Anon, like for love, but you stated two very red flag reasons you want to rush a marriage. I think you should re-evaluate your reasoning behind wanting to get married so soon after getting engaged. There are many people who have long engagements and people who do distance for a few years before settling down. What’s the rush except for the reasons you stated?
I’m also just curious as to how you will keep it on the down low while he’s getting BAH, unless he’s a high enough rate to get his own place off base and you can be his “fiancéroommate.” Most guys aren’t allowed to live off base unless they are married, but it differs in every branch/rate. I know with my guy, we can’t live together unless we are married and everyone knows that.
Like I said, I’m not trying to come off mean or harsh with my response, but I’m trying to save you from falling into a stereotype. BAH being one of the reasons you want to hurry and get married is diving head first into that awful stereotype.
