Two of the main fish that we breed at work are clownfish and dottybacks, and in most of the tanks in boodstock we have a clown pair and a dotty pair. Recently I have begun to think of them as the opposites of each other. Hear me out okay

Clownfish are all born male and the largest one in a group becomes the dominant female. She protects the territory and defends their nest from predators and rivals, while the smaller male tends to the eggs. Sometimes they fight but a happy, bonded clownfish couple is a force united, both of them prepared to keep their eggs safe at any cost.

Dotties are all born female and the largest one becomes the male. He is also territorial and defends his nest violently if necessary. But, he is also the sole caretaker of the eggs. The female dotty has no parental instincts whatsoever. In fact, part of the reason male dotties are so territorial is because the female is a predator. She won’t hesitate to turn around and eat the eggs she just laid. So, even the most chill dotty couple is in a constant tango of paranoia over the possibility of the female sneaking in and eating her own children. Even if the two have lived together peacefully for years, he has no problem ripping her apart if she gets too close to his nest before the eggs hatch.

It’s like a house with a happy loving couple on one floor and their downstairs neighbors are in a fight to the death because the wife was trying to eat their kids again.

And you might discover that theyre the best winter clothes youve ever worn because of COURSE they would be if theyve kept this culture warm in harsh winters for thousands of years.

Yes, you are allowed to join those Cambodians in that local holiday theyre celebrating during your visit if they literally invited you to it. They would not have invited you if they didnt want you to participate. And in the process you might learn a lot about a culture you never wouldve interacted with and you can all have a laugh together about your clumsy but genuine attempts at getting your footwork right in one of their traditional dances.

Yes, you are also allowed to ask if you can participate in something from the local culture you are visiting. Sometimes you will get "sorry, thats a closed practice" but in my experience most of the time you'll get "of course, let me show you how to do this!" And in my experience people tend to appreciate when others make an active effort in sharing their culture and wont stone you to death if youre clumsy about it while youre learning. I guarantee that the local children doing all of this for the first time too make the same mistakes you do and they can tell if youre being disrespectful or genuine.

So much "cultural appropriation" discourse really starts to sound like "you cant participate or visit any other cultures if youre from a Colonial Culture and have to stay in your little box and never relate to other people"

As an asexual who lived through ace discourse, I am grabbing you by the shoulders and coming as close to eye contact as I can and I am telling you; there is no shame in taking a break.

I know fellow asexuals where the only reason they are ALIVE is because they took a break from Tumblr when shit got bad and sure, people can wax poetic all they want about that being weak or selfish, but because those people took a break, they saw the end of this. The world did not lose an asexual that day because they listened to their brains, acknowledged their limits and their breaking points, and made that decision to take a step back. A human being lived, and that's what matters. So look, I know it can seem selfish, it can seem self-centred, it can feel like abandoning your friends during this, but if you feel that it is what you need to do, take that break. Protect yourself. The world needs a living trans, intersex, or nonbinary person more than Tumblr needs another punching bag. You are not betraying anyone by refusing to martyr yourself, and the world is better with you in it than with you as a statistic. When it gets too much, take a break. Delete your account, if you think you should. Resurface under a new name years later if you do at all- if it means that you live, do it. There is no shame in having a sense of self-preservation. That is not weakness. In fact, I would call making that decision in order to protect yourself basically the textbook definition of strenth.

I would rather read your "archiving my blog" post than your obituary. The world is a better place with you above ground. There is no shame in taking a break when you need it and if anyone says otherwise, fuck them. You are more important than internet discourse. Do what you feel you need to do and keep yourself safe. Your life is important.
