Lucy shook her head. “Shh, don’t be silly, Rosie. I’m kidding, it’s fine. Shout at me some more if it’ll make you feel better. Honestly, I’m surprised you’re not shouting more.” Despite the stark lack of articulation on her cousin’s part, she nodded, inferring the meaning from her tone mannerisms. It was a stupid question, really. How did she think Rose would be right now? “It’s good that you’re keeping busy, but the ministry really shouldn’t be working you so much right now! It’s preposterous. So preposterous, in fact, that I actually just said that word. Don’t you have any time off?”
Rose plucked the cigarette out of her mouth and stared at her hands, avoiding Lucy’s eyes. “Work is what I know, Lucy. Work is what I’m good at. It always has been. I survived Hogwarts by keeping a one-track mind. I was singly focused on becoming an Auror. Now, here I am... years of preparation, Auror training... it’s where I’m needed. Of course I take time off, but with mum...” she swallowed the word missing, “anyway, this is where I need to be. Unless you could convince me to do something else?” Her eyes twinkled. “Know of any good parties?”

Despite her various shortcomings, her seeming lack of regard for anyone other than herself, there did exist a group of people Lucy would do anything for: her family. It stemmed, perhaps, from knowing that her father had been absent at a time when they needed him most. She swore she would never let them down in the same way he had, and, as so, the moment she’d found out their mother was missing, she instinctively went to go find Rosie or Hugo. “Okay, rude. I only came by to tell you how pretty you look today and that I love you, but if you’re gonna use that tone of voice, I’ll take my compliments elsewhere.” Lucy paused, a sheepish smile on her lips at her joking outburst – poorly timed, probably. “How are you, petal?”
Rose’s lip wobbled precariously. Normally she would be diametrically opposed to anyone taking care of her. Rose Granger-Weasley was perfectly capable of taking care of herself, thank you very much! But now, when her entire world was falling apart (and Rose herself was coming undone at the seams) it felt deeply comforting to have someone check in on her. “Oh, Lucy... I’m so sorry.” She stuck her cigarette between her lips and rubbed her face angrily. “It’s just... I’ve been so...” she mumbled around the cigarette. “Well, I’ve been working a lot. Keeping busy. How’re you?”
HARRY feels like he hasn’t left his desk in DAYS, time seemingly becoming nonexistent the more he read over witness reports, the more images he examines, the more he rearranges the potential timeline of events. he hasn’t stopped, and he’s not going to, not when one of his CLOSEST, OLDEST friends is MISSING. She is not the minister to him, she is his family. MERLIN, what a mess this whole thing is. A hand reaches up to rub his forehead, an exhausted HUFF escaping his lips as the office door opens. The male doesn’t even look up. ‘‘ unless someone is literally DYING, or you’ve brought me a coffee, there’s no reason to be disturbing me. ’’
There are times (which are becoming more frequent despite doing the recommended mindfulness meditations that her therapist taught her) where she can’t quite sit right in her own skin. Everything hurts—her chest, her eyes, her fingertips. The fire inside her consumes her and leaves her huffing for air in an empty broom closet. Anxiety, is what her therapist calls it. Hopelessness. Fear of losing control. She needs to see someone who’ll make her feel better, maybe make her smile. “Erm—it’s just me. Can I sit here for a bit? If you’re too busy—” she winces, it’s stupid really. She shouldn’t’ve come. “Sorry,” she finishes lamely.
“Yeah, babe, you look super busy.” A smirk appeared on James’ lips as he dropped down beside Rose, leaning against the arm of the bench so he could stare at his cousin. He didn’t really know why he’d come to the Ministry – he was just tired of moping around so heading here seemed like a fairly logical plan in his head, until he arrived. He didn’t really want to talk to people and have them all asking how he was and shit. Under normal circumstances he’d be LIVING for the attention but today he just wanted to skulk away. Until he bumped into Rose and decided that she was one of the only people he could bear to chat to. He pouted and held out his hand as though expecting her to hand a cigarette over. “Not like you to be out here not working. Guess the world really is fucking weird right now.”
“Sulking is a full time job and fortunately for everyone around me, I’m excellent at it.” The cracks in her demeanor were crumbling—seeing James was almost too much for her. She’d been purposefully avoiding anyone who loved her for what seemed like forever now, and wasn’t sure she was ready to claw her way into the real world yet. Nevertheless, she dropped her cigarette case in his hand with a smile. “The world is fucking horrible right now,” she agreed, “but us Weasley-Granger-Potters are tough, you know. Resilient. Here despite it all. Our parents have been brave for a long time. Now it’s time for us to be brave too.” Her smile wavered slightly which she covered up with a drag of her cigarette. “How’re you, love?”
Rose’s life, which so far had been easy, despite her theatrics, had been turned upside down in a matter of moments. Mum was gone. All those years of resentment now seemed inconsequential. Hermione wasn’t even a bad mother, she was just... detailed. Busy. Rose had no real reason to resent her. The guilt she felt was all-consuming. No amount of throwing herself into work could get rid of it. She rarely took a break, but forced herself to do so now. She grabbed her cigarette case and wound her way through the Ministry so she could smoke outside in peace. The bench she normally occupied was blessedly empty, and she sat down with a huff. Peace. That was, until someone tapped on her shoulder. “Oi, can’t you see I’m busy?”

Rose spent most of her life convincing herself that she was nothing like her mother. There’s nothing particularly wrong with Hermione, per se, but Rose has always felt far more connected to her father. Ron was never ambitious, though. That she got from Hermione.
When she was growing up she often begged her dad to tell her stories about his childhood. She loved learning about his adventures, though she didn’t realize how famous her parents were until they were about to board the train to Hogwarts. The stories became real and made her parents heroes in her mind.
Rose spent her formative years in Muggle schooling. Hermione insisted that her children learn both worlds in case they took a fancy to some Muggle hobbies or occupations. Rose didn’t mind it, though she preferred to be around her magic family.
At eleven, Rose got to Hogwarts and caused a MAJOR hat stall. Eleven year old Rose was suited for Ravenclaw, Gryffindor, and Slytherin. Rose had panicked what would Ron say if she was sorted into Slytherin?? and had begged the hat to place her in Gryffindor. It wasn’t a bad choice at all. Rose has bravery aplenty.
Rose had a difficult time at Hogwarts. Reconciling who she wants to be with who she is has always been difficult for her. Rose is argumentative, headstrong, and foolhardy but she’s also loving, daring, and empathetic.
Rose always knew what she wanted to do. Her desire to be a hero like her parents drove her straight to the Auror department. From a young age she would proudly declare that she would be an Auror just like her dad & uncle! Rose spent so much of her life knowing exactly what she wanted to do (because when she gets an idea in her head there is absolutely no swaying her) that she’s not even really positive that she wants to be an Auror for the rest of her life.
Rose is so resolutely stubborn and set in her ways that she sometimes forgets that other people have emotions. Her goals are really the only things that matter to her and the rest is?? mostly unimportant. She’s ambitious and career driven to a fault and doesn’t like to be confronted about it because Rose Granger-Weasley Is Always Right.
If you’ve seen Veep: Rose is Selina Meyer. One of those characters you aren’t sure if you’re rooting for or against but you can’t help but admire them nonetheless.
She was not soft. She smelled like cigarettes, leather, and ground black coffee. And when you inhaled, she burned your lungs the way that made you want to do it again. She was danger, and you wanted her.
