It was scarcely more than a mutter at the back of the SJW Re-Education 101 classroom. At first, in the middle of his lecture, Mr. Fleetwoodbrak wasn’t even sure he’d heard the brave young woman correctly. The only straight white woman in the class. Her pale, nerdy, brunette, “i just want to cuddle with one man forever” vibe blazing like a sick beacon of deviance in amongst the sea of polyamorous communist LGBT people of color. He glared at her over his flamboyant glasses, eyes burning gaily. 

But she was brave. Very brave. The bravest brunette white girl in her class. She punched things. Hard. Once she’d even punched a guy in the face when she walked in on him making out with another girl. She would punch God Almighty off his throne if she could. And one day, she would punch this tyrannical regime to pieces. She looked him straight in the eye, punching him with her gaze.

She said it louder this time, causing every butch, femme, top, bottom, vers, bear, otter, twink, and twunk to spin their heads in raging disbelief that she dare voice her straight opinion.

She stood straight up on her desk, fondly remembering when she used to watch Dead Poets Society before it had been deemed “problematic” and erased from history.

Almost screaming now, screaming at a sea of people who would never understood what it was like to feel DIFFERENT. Who would NEVER understand what it was like to have society force you to live in shame and fear.

hey all i just wanna take a second to say that “soft butch” doesn’t mean “lesbian who is ‘between’ butch and femme.” 

soft butch means a butch woman who is a goofball softy. not super tough. probably a nice squishy belly to relax in. probably not stone. you will probably end up holding a soft butch during a horror movie. probably likes to be the little spoon a lot. just kinda soft you know? however, soft butches are not like a more feminine or “less butch” butch. soft butches are just as butch and masculine-presenting in their own ways as any other butch.

please please please read up on lesbian history and community before you go throwing around terms! stone butch blues and the persistent desire: a femme-butch reader are excellent titles that will take you through a historical context of butch identities. 

once again, butch and femme are NOT a spectrum of masculinity –> femininity, with soft butch being “feminine butch” and stone butch being “masculine butch.” butch identity is more nuanced than that and generally all butches are intuitively masculine-presenting or gender nonconforming in some way. if you’re not butch or femme that is okay, please don’t go grabbing onto terms without investigating their history and finding a home in them first

my hot take as someone who has experienced the lowest of lows in terms of severe depression and anxiety and executive dysfunction: the whole “not everyone is neurotypical karen” mindset is legitimately damaging and destructive and ultimately will make you feel worse and more isolated

eating well and exercising and etc absolutely helps with mental illness. obviously it’s irritating to hear that when those things feel like impossible tasks, i get that, and i’ve been there. but forcing yourself to eat better, to walk more, to get up out of bed and shower even when you don’t want to, those things help. they clear your head. they make you feel better. they absolutely do. getting there is hard, but once you do it, it does help

rejecting any kind of help, even the most benign suggestion, from someone who is trying their best to think positively for you and shoulder the emotional burden with you, is going to make you feel worse. it’s going to make you feel that much more cut off and lonely and frustrated. i have isolated myself and ruined friendships with people because i chose to close myself off from people who were just trying to help and i convinced myself that they didn’t understand me and no one would ever understand me. what did that get me in the end? genuinely nothing. it made me feel even more alone.

in 2018 i encourage people who suffer like i have to see where people are coming from with cheesy self-care advice. they’re coming from the heart. and sometimes, doing a face mask or taking a hot bath or eating a nutritious meal or getting up to watch the sunrise or even just one yoga class can make you feel that much closer to the person you want to be. a lot of recovery from mental illness is “fake it till you make it” type shit. so don’t reject even the corniest advice because you are convinced it won’t help you. sometimes it really does. and you shouldn’t keep denying yourself even the smallest of victories because you feel like it’s easier to wallow in how bad you feel. it is so difficult to do good things for yourself and your body, but it is so rewarding
