at the end of the day barty jr’s story is just so centered around violation & bodies & coercion that i can’t really take seriously any readings of his character that don’t name (sexual) abuse as a pivotal part of his history. in the sense that, yes, his behavior just reads as very csa victim to me, but also that his story already contains so many of those elements (as to be indistinguishable from a straightforward rape narrative) that it doesn’t seem a leap whatsoever to “cross” that final line & literalise it.

also i think people like to take up the “what if barty was just like that organically” line in response to a strain of fanon that prefers to hand-wave away death eater atrocities by justifying them with vaguely handled but very dramatically tragic home lives, which is boring. but barty is a rare character in that an earnest consideration of sexual abuse in his past falls incredibly in-line with his canonical themes already present, themes which aren’t explored enough & deserve to be taken more seriously imo. jkr included a lot of random shit in his story arc that can be sharpened, clarified, and contextualized when you see him as a rape victim caught in a violent lifelong struggle for autonomy that feels forever out of reach. like, him stealing moody’s body (in this context) becomes really impactful! him ultimately failing to gain independence and instead finding “strength” in playing servant to another all-powerful father figure who uses his body (in this context) becomes really impactful! barty manipulating children himself is impactful! to me it seems like the primary role of fandom should be to explore these complexities ….

my follow-up opinion is that i think barty's history of csa happened outside the family but still within the realm of his father - probably by one of his father's colleagues. i prefer reading him this way because i think the vast differences in barty's parents' treatment of him can be interpreted as the two most common reactions to revelations of sexual abuse, ie either pity or revulsion.

mrs. crouch clearly sees her son as a victim in constant need of defense/rescue (and winky too! calling him "poor boy" and claiming he doesn't know better!) and i think this history would help explain how she can feel so much blind empathy for him when he's literally a convicted murderer, so much as to sacrifice her life for him.

and most compellingly - this is a really potent explanation for crouch sr's seemingly inexplicable contempt for his son! even before the trial & all that, sirius makes a crack abt how barty sr should have taken more of an interest in jr, other characters are baffled why he's so severe on him. a father responding with lifelong distance and disgust is unfortunately an extremely common reaction to revelations of abuse, especially when it happens to a son. and i see why barty junior would hate him for this the amount that he does.
