I remember when I was a kid, very young, so this would be late 90s, I was watching some silly late-night sitcom with my dad and he started ranting about how it was stupid that TV censors what it does. He was the more freethinking parent.
Then, a bit later in life, but still in my childhood, there was this fairly large "censorship war". My mom would constantly say that the end times are coming because we're getting more and more sinful. She blamed television for their lack of censorship.
I also saw that she was losing, and this "censorship" was really just the product of loud, stuck-up, religious Americans not wanting to see gay shit on TV, or hear certain curse words, or see women dress sexy; lest they clutch their pearls.
Eventually, television became more and more lax, and as the internet grew, we fought there too. For a while, it seemed like we were heading in a better direction, aside for all of the other glaring issues of the early 2000's.
So it baffles my mind how we have done a complete 180 and now, so many people are censoring THEMSELVES. Even on sites that don't "shadowban" you for saying things, they will type the stupidest shit to censor themselves.
I'm not sorry, "unalive" is fucking stupid. "Grape" is the fucking worst way to describe such a horrific act. "Dihh" and "ahh" just make you sound ridiculous. Just say or type the fucking words.
How in the fuck did we go from fighting censorship to embracing it on a full cultural level that it has even entered its way into our everyday vernacular?? No, saying they "unalived" themselves is not because its easier to hear or less triggering, its because some app started manipulating you to not talk about important subjects and instead of fighting back, its userbase continues to soften the language of things that should absolutely make you uncomfortable.
It truly is unbelievable to me how easily we are manipulated online by both the predatory companies of the apps we use, and the other users that use it too. Oh, and not to mention the bots.
Stop censoring yourself, you're not doing anybody any favors, including yourself.
