The one thing i’ve noticed in my days of being a lolita, is that there are a lot of rules. Rules I never knew about until I actually started researching the fashion. Because of this, many young lolitas starting out, have trouble conforming to these rules due to certain circumstances such as, cost, size, where they live, and uniform systems. Because of this many people starting out have a hard time, and some even give up before they start. I remember being one of those people. I thought it was impossible to build up such a pretty wardrobe due to my circumstances, and almost gave up. But I didn’t. I kept trying, and working with what I had. Yeah it didn’t fit the rules, but I had fun, and it gave me hope. Back then, I was considered an “Ita”. Itas are people who try to do lolita, but “do it wrong”. And that is due to the many rules lolita has. Whether or not lolita has too many rules is actually a touchy subject due to the fact that it is based off Victorian and Rococo fashion, of which ALSO had many rules. The basic rules make sense, wear petticoats, cover your skin, don’t show cleavage, stuff like that. But there are OTHER rules as well. I recently went on the lolita amino, and found a girl with a very cute coord. But all people had to say about it was how the cat ears didn’t belong, or made it look like a costume. Honestly, I thought they were cute, and they did in fact look good with the dress she chose. In fact, it got me in the mood to wear my bunny ears. But saying that cat ears make it look like a costume, goes against the reasons why some people wear lolita. That would be like me going up to a lolita and saying her dress looked like a costume. Or a cancer patient and saying, their wig looked like a costume. Maybe her cat ears were NOT a costume. Maybe they were a part of who she was. She seemed happy wearing them, so why take that happiness away just because it “didn’t conform to the rules” In the end, clothes are clothes, and they are there to cover us up. So however someone interprets lolita, that is them. It's not harming you, or I, so what does it matter. Lolita isn’t some 1 million dollar contest, or the cure to cancer, it's fashion. And fashion can tell you a lot about a person, so why take away their story.
