Got an animation history fact of the day?
Charles Mintz was a punk-ass bitch
aight i dug up my old lecture notes bc i wanted to go off on this idiot properly
if you know the history of Oswald the Lucky Rabbit, you’re familiar with Mintz’s legacy as King Douchebag. He’s the dude who used Walt Disney’s contract with Universal against him, took claim of the rights to Oswald and got all of Disney’s animators to sign on with his plan. He’s the guy who said that if Disney wanted to keep his character and his staff and everything he’d worked for, he’d have to work for pennies under Mintz. Walt figured he’d rather start from scratch than bend to this turdgobbler’s will, and went off to start his own company, like some sort of fool.
And the thing is with Mintz is that he did not get into this position to fuck over Walt because he was a shrewd businessman or any shit like that, he literally married into the position. Margaret Winkler was the badass genius distributor who helped early animators get on the map and release their work on a larger scale, but when she got married to Mintz he got to take over all that shit. Margaret was goddamn awesome, she basically built up the animation industry from a bunch of cute little indie projects to an actual nationwide, like, THING. She had a real knack for knowing which products were worth distributing on a large scale, and she was about advancing the new art form and helping true talent succeed. Her fartknocker husband threw all that out the window and ran the business on how to wring as much money out of the animation industry as possible.
So anyway Mintz was all proud of himself for sending that idiot Walt Disney off and SURELY they’d never hear from that loser again, so he goes to his bosses at Universal like “hey guys look what I got! A whole new character!” and Universal was pretty sick of his shit by this point so they went “actually I think you’ll find WE are the ones with a whole new character” and he got fired while Universal took the rights to Oswald
so basically if you ever wonder why Disney contracts are terrifying inescapable prisons, it’s because of this idiot who ruined it for everyone and taught Disney that in this world it’s fuck or be fucked
literally the disney company was founded out of pure spite and once you realize that everything makes a lot more sense
here’s an old patreon reward to fill in the drawing-hiatus void a bit; something I get asked about a lot is the ‘acting’ in my comics and how to be subtle with conveying emotions. The answer is mostly experience and constantly observing people in real life to learn about expressions, but knowing when to ‘dial up’ or ‘dial down’ emotion is very important! context is king- this is basically the same advice that Carl Barks gave on one of his reference sheets here (in a much more succinct manner!):
I live my artistic life by this
Feeling confident today, eh?
Bendy & The Toon Gang
Oswald: Hey! Get off my back
Mickey: Oh… Im Sorry, Oswald.
Felix: What’s going on!
Cuphead: Hey, I’m supposed to be the first, not you Bendy!
Bendy: Ha ha ha!, I am the Star!!
