When Rue spoke, he realised that somehow, she could tell. Glancing down at the strap of his bag, he noticed the slightest stain of blood hidden under a fold of fabric that he was sure would have been invisible to anyone looking at him. Fingers scrabbling against the mark, all he succeeded in doing was gathering dried blood under his bitten fingernails, and even the sight of it caused a panic in him. “No-” He interjected loudly, fumbling to pull the bag away, get the evidence anywhere but with him.
Rue raised an eyebrow. “Wow, you’re really bad at this. You couldn’t act more guilty if you tried.” She said simply. “Pass it here.” Rue said, holding her hand out for the bag so she could inspect the spot of blood more closely. “It should be easy enough to get out. Salt usually works. But the best way is toothpaste. Rub it in with a brush. Let it dry and then wash it with soap as many times as necessary.” Rue said, not explaining why she knew all this or how.
