Meeting with Madame Vice-President of the Dominican Republic

Last month, I was in the Dominican Republic and took the opportunity to visit the Presidential Palace and have a chat with Mrs. Margarita Cedeño de Fernández, current Vice-President and former First Lady of the Dominican Republic.

Madame Vice-President has been a role-model for women in Latin America, empowering people by locating solutions and strategies to get out of poverty, as well as taking an active role in bringing innovation and technology to remote and rural communities in the Caribbean nation.

To make sure of this, this entrepreneurial politician led the creation of a network of Community Tech Centers around the Dominican Republic, working with short, medium and long-term goals with one vision in mind: provide solutions and tools for people to work their way out of poverty.

Our conversation was oriented into finding specific programs to trigger entrepreneurship into the communities, as well as providing new paths for the young Dominicans living around these communities. I was very honored to see first-hand her determination into taking ideas into action and of her entire team.

I talked about entrepreneurship with the Prince of Spain

I had the opportunity to have an encounter with His Royal Highness don Felipe de Borbón y de Grecia, Prince of Asturias and future King of Spain at the Casa América in Madrid. We had a brief conversation about the Spanish entrepreneurship, what entrepreneurs can do for the Ibero-American region and his beliefs in the subject. 

Prince Felipe considers extremely vital that governments should work towards helping strengthen their national business nets, promote the creation of private enterprises and facilitate entrepreneurial activities in all sectors. 

His Royal Highness also acknowledges the incredible effort by thousands of entrepreneurs who assume a great financial and personal risk when they pursue their dreams, and the fact they trust Spain as the place to do so. 

The future King of Spain also asked me to continue betting for my startup Pathfinder and wished us only the very best for our team and other entrepreneurs in our situation. In other words, His Royal Awesomeness is awesome.

Greetings from Pamplona!

Hello people!

I'm visiting this weekend Pamplona in Navarre for the first time. Even though I've been living in Spain for almost 7 years, I never had the chance to come here. The reason I came this time is because fellow Area 31 entrepreneur Eduardo Huarte from Innubu got married. 

I was very happy to attend to Edu & Judy's happy moment, and we just had a blast in this hotel. Too bad Vine is not working properly for me with the iOS 7 beta, because there was a lot happening there. But now, I'm going out to enjoy a few hours in Pamplona before heading back to Madrid.

My Meeting with the Prime Minister of Spain

Today, The Prime Minister of Spain, Mariano Rajoy, finally announced the Entrepreneurship Law of Spain. This is a moment that thousands of people (and hundreds of tech startups) have been waiting for.

Most of all, the law would benefit people who would like to create businesses in Spain, allowing them to grow with as less challenges as possible, like every government should do. The entrepreneurial initiative Spain is taking would also implement a startup visa to bring foreigners to Spain and give entrepreneurship as a subject in elementary schools as well as to high school students.

I had the chance to share with him my perspective as an international entrepreneur, as well as debated the progress of the entrepreneurial spirit in Spain and Latin America.

VICE es la nueva serie documental de HBO hecha por la revista que lleva el mismo nombre. Sin duda será un antes y un después en el periodismo audiovisual, va más allá para buscar la verdad, sin miedos.

HipChat 'lanza' el Emoticorrect

Me acuerdo de cuando Google hace casi una década nos engañaba año tras año con sus bromas y trampas para el April Fool's Day. Ahora en el 2013, llega al punto de que me aburre porque ya me lo espero.

De Google y otras pocas empresas, se ha convertido ley en Silicon Valley hacer alguna parodia para April Fool's Day, además de seguir el último vídeo-meme como lo ha sido el Harlem Shake hace unos meses.

El problema está en que ya es más que esperado. Si no te acuerdas, solo hace falta que entres en cualquier red social ese día para que veas que April Fool's es el primer tópico en tendencia. Dudo que alguien se haya pegado la nariz cuando Google anunció en April Fool's Day, por ende me ha dejado de sorprender.

Una startup que sí me ha gustado este año ha sido HipChat. Se han olvidado de intentar engañar al usuario, sino que directamente se han ido al extremo de lo ridículo para causar algunas risas con el lanzamiento exagerado de su nueva herramienta falsa. Han tenido la iniciativa de hacer algo más gracioso, y creo que les ha funcionado.

HipChat es un servicio de mensajería instantánea entre equipos de trabajo y empresas. Desde hace recientemente, este servicio para los equipos de 5 personas o menos será gratis. Los equipos más grandes tienen una cuota mensual de $2 por usuario.

Paperless Productivo usando Doxie Go

Desde hace unos meses, soy el embajador para negocios de Evernote para España. Gracias a este programa, ahora tengo una relación más cercana con productos y compañías que admiro dentro del ecosistema Evernote, además de tener la oportunidad de probar nuevos productos.

Ahora soy consumidor del escáner Doxie Go, cuyo factor diferencial con la gama de productos de Doxie es la potabilidad del mismo. El escáner te permite funcionar aunque no esté enchufado, y si se le agrega una tarjeta EyeFI se puede conectar directamente al WiFi. 

En mi caso, siendo emprendedor tecnológico divido mi tiempo entre el Madrid International Lab, donde oficialmente están las oficinas de mi startup Pathfinder, y en la incubadora de empresa del IE Business School, Area 31. También paso mucho tiempo fuera de Madrid, y en esos momentos es donde me sirve más tener el escáner portátil a mano.

Hace unas semanas, estuve en el Mobile World Congress en Barcelona. Normalmente en este tipo de conferencias, acumulas mucho papel. Al final de la conferencia tienes demasiadas cosas, y aún habiendo depurado y eliminado lo innecesario, te quedas con una gran cantidad de papel. Tenía códigos de descuentos para todo tipo de servicios necesarios para mi empresa y mi persona, literatura sobre startups que me interesaban y también alguna información de estrategias que quería guardar. 

Tener el escáner Doxie a mano me permitió de escanearlo todo y no tener que guardar físicamente absolutamente nada. Doxie Go está conectado con mi cuenta de Evernote a través del iPhone, iPad o Mac, donde va almacenando todo lo que escaneo.

The man who said 'I'd rather be lucky than good' saw deeply into life. People are afraid to face how great a part of life is dependent on luck. It's scary to think so much is out of one's control. There are moments in a match when the ball hits the top of the net, and for a split second, it can either go forward or fall back. With a little luck, it goes forward, and you win. Or maybe it doesn't, and you lose.
