My project hail mary hot take is I don’t think Stratt would feel that guilty or be particularly haunted by Grace. I think she would be more tormented by the victims of the climate disasters she caused, and by the idea that she maybe could have saved thousands more lives by actions she didn’t take or didn’t think of. I think she envies Grace for getting to go off and die a hero without watching the death and destruction on Earth.

Prefacing this with I haven’t gotten to the book yet but know a few spoilers. Up until this post and the few comments on it I would have been on the “Grace is the dead wife haunting the narrative of Stratt’s life” train. But you guys are so right. Obviously she never regretted sending him even against his will but I would have thought she would have felt guilt. But yeah she would view it as a mercy, he would suffer a bit in space maybe but there’s several humane ways of death onboard for after they complete their mission. Plus he’s asleep for the majority of Earth’s suffering. Other than the loss of autonomy (which is horrific) and the suicide mission it’s a lot kinder than trying to survive on earth. Like putting down your pet. It’s for the best for everyone.

Carl on the other hand I do think is more haunted even if he doesn’t fully regret letting them take Grace either.

lukewarm take but i have seen about 500 posts now about How Rocky Thinks About Stratt and I feel like the one I haven't seen is

forget Rocky understanding or empathizing or being outraged because of the ethics of bodily autonomy or the extreme eridian-specific-horror of forced sleep with no one to protect you (which LITERALLY KILLED 66.6% of the fucking crew)

forget all that

consider: rocky hates stratt because he loves grace, and when you love someone that much and they've been hurt by someone else, you carry that pain and anger for your loved one so they don't have to do it themselves.

I'm not even saying "Rocky is the do you want me to kill that guy for you question friend when someone mildly inconveniences Grace"

I'm saying if Grace tells Rocky how that all went down, including the manipulation tactics Stratt tried which are all rooted in Grace is unloved/unloving (in the ways that matter to society enough to matter, the Aromantic Nightmare Scenario), Rocky may feel overwhelmingly compelled to be the do you want me to kill that guy for you question person for Grace bc clearly he needs one and Rocky loves him and the idea that Grace doesn't care enough about people is upsetting to Rocky, who knows better

so it doesn't matter if it was right or wrong or nuanced or whatever. not every action people take is Perfectly Rational. most aren't! so Rocky hates Stratt because he loves Grace.

This is basically what I think Rocky feels about the whole situation. Like logically he understands why she did what she did. Logically he might even agree, especially since it all worked out and two worlds were saved.

But emotionally, the part that puts Grace above his own safety and life is so so angry at her for betraying him. She sacrificed one of Rocky’s most important people. Yes it was for the entire world but she sent Grace against his will to die. If she hadn’t they never would’ve met and their missions and planets would be doomed. But Grace was hurt by her actions and is still hurting because of them. And because Grace is hurt Rocky is hurt.

Emotions aren’t clean , he hates her, he is so grateful to her, he understands exactly why she did it and maybe even if in her place would do the same.

Would he actually kill her if they met? No. Would he be bitchy? Absolutely. Does he hope she feels guilty every day for what she did? Yes.

Anyone else thinking about how Important names are to Eridian culture, considering how Rocky addressed himself and Adrian, and what that would mean once Grace got to Erid. (ignore statements of time i refuse to do the conversions)

Imagine, after decades of your world becoming colder and colder, you are saved. A single Eridian, the only one of twenty three to survive, arrives in an alien ship, accompanied by a creature you can barely conceive.

Everything about the alien is so loud, hinges formed from tissue thumping and stretching in constant movement, even while unconscious. Completely organic, reliant of oxygen and hydrogen. Instead of a protective carapace, it regrows its damaged tissues. It has senses you do not, and technology so unlike your own, both able to utilise a force you have never heard of. The same force that killed almost your entire mission team. Highly adaptable, able to teach itself how to fly its ship in under a week, able to become fluent in the engineer's dialect in less than four years.

And if Erid's best engineer is correct (and there's no reason it wouldn't be), this creature not only managed to breed a predator of the warmth-taker to survive in various atmospheres, including Threeworld's, but also turned around to provide aid when it discovered that the predator could escape xenonite.

And you think: Surely, this creature which protects itself without a carapace, which sleeps so lightly and knows so much and learns so quickly, which saved two planets at the cost of ever returning to its thrum, surely, a creature so extraordinary must have a name to match

And you think: Perhaps it is strength, Mountain-Base or Lonsdaleite-Carapace. Perhaps it is intellect, Diamond-Claw or Lockpick-Mind. Perhaps it is courage, Song-Through-Silence or Path-Carver

And you think: None of these names hold the true weight of what this creature is to them. How do you describe something like that, which aids without expectation of anything in return, which risks its own life for the sake of a species it cannot touch, which performs miracles simply because it was asked.

And then you learn: Your saviour's name is Kindness

i firmly believe that one of the reasons tumblr latched onto project hail mary so hard is because we're all so obsessed with the dead wife trope lately and grace is his own dead wife. half of the book/film is grace experiencing a dead wife montage about himself and that's beautiful to me
