You have to look for the warning signs and there are a lot of them with the Trump administration. Like, big red flags with glowing flares.

A Garden Is a Lovesome Thing

Oh man, I am finally, FINALLY finished with this big bang! With art from the awesome @risowator, here is the fic borne of my relationship experiences.

Summary:

After the chaos has died down, Stiles attempts to find normalcy in his life. Somehow, helping Derek bring a garden back to life becomes part of that normalcy. Through the seasons, they fight, laugh, talk, eat, breathe.

In the end, they find that what comes to life is more than just a garden.

Starts post-3b, somewhere in November, and then is canon-divergent. Just a few other things: - Boyd miraculously survives Derek’s claws (because if Derek can survive being impaled by a pole, then Boyd can live as well. Plus, how come Derek didn’t get a power boost if he killed one of his own pack? Silly details). Boyd is a part of the pack, though Erica is still dead. - Derek is not kidnapped by Kate, so the dream sequence at the end of 3b doesn’t happen. Nothing from Season 4 exists (No Liam, Mason, deadpool, etc.) - Kate is not a were-jaguar; Kate is dead from Peter’s slashing in Season 1.

Favourite narrative tropes:

“That was ONE time!”

“Due to an administrative error”, or any major plot point which is caused almost entirely by bureaucratic fuckups

“Contrary to popular belief” appended to something that’s either really obvious or completely subjective

A character makes an assertion, then cut to the narrator contradicting it (‘“Everything’s fine!” Everything was not fine.’)

First-person narrators who call a specific character by a series of increasingly convoluted nicknames

Unusual narrative euphemisms. I still hold that describing around a curse word is almost always funnier than just using the word.

Establishing character moments which subvert your expectations right from the get-go. The best example is in the Brooklyn Nine Nine pilot, where Jake’s fooling around at the crime scene before revealing that he’s already solved the case.

Montages. Just montages of any kind, for any reason, anytime. I actually think they work better in text form because you can do so many creative things with them.

Side characters with a level of fourth-wall awareness / quasi-supernatural ability which is never quite certain, like the janitor in Scrubs.

Double meanings in narration that take a while to make themselves clear.

Really, really specific similes.

guys lmao I went back to watch some old law and order svu episodes and there’s this one scene where a girl claims her alibi is she went to see the phantom of the opera and to confirm whether or not she’s telling the truth the detective goes, ‘oh yeah I love phantom of the opera it’s so sad when the guy goes to prison for stealing bread’ and the girl AGREES and later he’s telling his partner ‘yeah she’s lying there’s no bread in phantom’

“Happens,” the guy says, smiling into his eyes. Derek’s heart skips a beat as the eye contact lasts a second longer than it maybe should. “I’m Stiles, by the way,” he says, holding out a hand.

Derek shakes his hand, has to remind himself to let go. “Derek,” he answers, and feels his ears warm up.
