The idea of english as a mother tongue is so strange to me, in my head english is how ppl communicate when there's no way in common to communicate, so english as a mother tongue sounds a bit like idk email as a mother tongue ykwim? Like english to me feels like the stuff that's used to fill the empty spaces between languages

Ok English is my native language and unfortunatly the only one I know yet, but this reminds me so much of that passage in Flights by Olga Tokarczuk

One of the most fulfilling experiences I've ever had was meeting someone from South Korea in VRChat. He didn't speak English, however we were both studying Japanese at that time

(I still am currently. I think I'll always be in a state of studying japanese though, theres always new things to learn and understand about such a beautiful language)

Anyway, we both spend a few hours conversing in Japanese with one another. It was possibly the wildest experience I've ever had as a native English speaker from an English speaking country.

There was this... human connection I felt with this person, someone who I wouldn't have been able to communicate with otherwise. Neither of us spoke the other's mother tongue, but we shared a different language. And there was this excitement and friendliness, it was like it didn't matter that we were both from different cultures and backgrounds at all.

Suddenly there was common ground, and a means for communication and there was something special in that moment
