I am not too shocked about Deedee Magno Hall being conservative/alt right
Because she's Filipino. And unfortunately as a local born and raised as Filipino, the Philippines remains generally conservative and generally will align with right wing values whether they're aware of it or not
There's definitely a larger broader issue amongst the Asian American or generally Asian Diaspora after they've left their homelands or now a part of a born and raised generation that didn't get to grow up from their parents' original birthplace or land.
But just as someone who's going to share Filipino culture & POV, I've seen my family, relatives, friends' families, leaving to find a better life outside the Philippines, they brought with them the systemic and social issues that's plagued the Philippines for centuries.
Filipinos generally look up to White/European/American Western cultures as the true ideals of living. And because besides both the 3 centuries of Spanish Colonial rule and 30+ years of American occupation which THEY only ended on July 4, 1945 (YUP!!!😡), Filipinos have likely assimilated with generally the conservative white community, as to become more acceptable to the (white) American.
And this is generally applied to other countries as well, I've seen and read stories of how many Filipino Diaspora have developed a superiority complex or have made themselves a part of a religious (Christian/Catholic) community if we're looking at Europe or at other Asian, Arab or African countries
And yes there's Islam in the Philippines, but the Philippines is predominantly a Christian-Catholic nation. Coupled with the fact that atheism and non-religion has ONLY taken a spike in the recent decade alone, ON TOP OF the fact that there's STILL NO ABORTION in the Philippines, NO DIVORCE, no good health care, ever rising marginalized poverty, and generally decaying social and political institutions, merely run now by the grunts of the oligarchs of the country and by the few still sane, humanitarian NGOs & the numbered functioning politicians left...
speaks to how the Philippines is probably even worse than the Bible Belt of America. The things many progressive Americans fear the USA will turn into without any rights and proper protection, it's generally been happening here in the Philippines
Deedee Magno Hall comes from the early generation of Boomers & Gen X Filipinos who sought the opportunity to be out of the country during the 1980s, or was born into the American soil, (I didn't look up her full background, so probably earlier but it doesn't matter..) because during these middle to late 20th century, the Philippines was under it's own upheaval: the rise of oligarchy, a martial law, and rising country debt. With a population steeped in conservative 16th century Spanish style of rigid Catholicism and conservativism, and subjugated by the American Imperialism before even WW2 broke out.. It's kinda no wonder
I didn't describe Magno Hall. I was more focused on sharing a very very oversimplification of how fucked up the Philippines is and is still. Deedee Magno Hall & many Filipino Diaspora just brought with them years and years of this conservativism, dogmatic religious culture and White Western admiration with them. And they're fueling the alt-right movements in the USA whether they want to remain ignorant or not
