I think it's SO interesting that a lot of people have assumed Matt told the Mattlings about his relationship with Jay, because I kind of think it's the opposite?
I get it. if you were madly obsessed with the guy, why wouldn't you tell anyone who would listen that you used to be best fucking friends with the man? but I kind of think... Matt's already sharing Jay with the entire fucking world. Jay used to be his and really his only. they broke up fairly young, but they were still starting to isolate themselves into nothing but Rivoli plans and running around the city and having the only other guys who they regularly see be people who are recording Matt and Jay's interactions for posterity
and so, to me... I just kind of feel like, when Matt's already lost Jay so fully to millions of screaming fans, he'd want to keep what he could to himself. he'd want to hoard those memories, bury them deep inside, only pull them out when no one else is around. I don't think he'd want to invite everyone else into the only parts of Jay that he can still claim as his. he knows how Jay's mother treated him. he knows that Jay still had nightmares sometimes. he remembers Jay as an anxious little kid with no other friends. he has pictures of Jay that no one else has ever seen. why wouldn't he cling to that? he could tell people that he's pretty sure Jay wrote a song about him and here's all of his proof, but... it feels more intimate to put his headphones on and listen to the song on repeat curled up on his bedroom floor while moonlight streams through the window and strikes a picture of him and Jay that he still has from Before
it lends more to comedy, definitely, to have Matt be loud and brash and shouting down that JAY MCCARROL USED TO BE MY ROOMMATE, THE FUCKER! but... I think it's more raw and real that he hides it
it also seems to be the take Matt (director) was leaning towards, if you take into account the deleted scene of him with Ethan. if Coverband Matt was open about his relationship with Jay, certainly Ethan would already know how they'd met. Ethan would probably know even contour of Matt's life with Jay by now. but he's kept it hidden. he's shy š„ŗ
this then goes into my reunion theory that Matt has similarly avoided actually going to concerts or getting too close to Jay. it's one thing to hide at home and listen to his music or watch Jay on TV, but in PERSON? a MEET AND GREET? what would Matt fucking say?
so, the Jay concert is sort of his new Rivoli, something he almost wants but can't have and is secretly relieved for because it would disrupt his life to have it. but then, one day, in 2025, the fucking Mattlings succeed at getting tickets. and Matt doesn't know what to do besides go ahead with it. he's so flooded with emotion that he lets them basically guide him through the night, and he almost doesn't register that he's about to see Jay for the first time in 17 years until Jay's so fucking close, and Jay is... his own can of worms for his own post but I'm pretty sure he's never stopped regretting leaving Matt, but how could he ever admit to himself that he's unhappy? that he sold Matt out and it's fucked him up? so he never reached out either. and now both of them are finally pushed back together
