being the squidward of gay people is like when youre making hummus wraps and fancy coffees and taking long baths where you sit there and read a magazine but all your gay friends just want to watch anime

riot grrrl documentaries
some riot grrrl/90s documentaries i have personally seen so obviously not all of them but in case anyone else wants to watch them :) i’m working on a googledoc to upload them to but until that these are youtube/1 vimeo links. also i’ve seen all these once so my memory isn’t the best at remembering everyone that was in them.
NOT BAD FOR A GIRL (1995) Dir. Lisa Rose Apramian. 1h 30m.
“ A documentary on women musicians of the 90s from the indie rock music genre grunge and riot grrrl and celebrates madness, creativity, and gender play. “ (L7, Lunachicks, Babes In Toyland, Hole, 7 Year Bitch, Joan Jett, +). this isn’t the best version of it & it’s been deleted and re-uploaded so many times; this is what’s up right now. i’ll edit this when i have the better version in a google doc :)
EDIT: better quality version here
DON’T NEED YOU: The Herstory of Riot Grrrl (2005) Dir. Kerri Koch. 40 minutes.
“ A documentary that tells the story of the origins of Riot Grrrl in the American independent music scene of the 1990s, and how the feminist movement evolved into a revolutionary underground network of education and self-awareness through music, writing, activism, and women-friendly community. “ (Bikini Kill, Bratmobile, Dasha Bikceem, Heavens to Betsy, Tattletale, +) this one is my personal favorite i really can’t recommend it enough.
No Alternative Girls (1994) Dir. Tamra Davis. 6 minutes.
it’s :// not much to say except i think this is the only on-camera interview huggy bear did? (Kim Gordon/Free Kitten, Huggy Bear, Kathleen Hanna, Courtney Love, +)
Bikini Kill in the U.K. “It Changed My Life” (1993) Dir. Lucy Thane. 25 minutes.
“ A Video about the 1993 tour of the U.K. by Riot Grrrl bands Bikini Kill and Huggy Bear. Also contains contributions by the Raincoats, Sister George, Skinned Teen, and interviews with all bands and many girls at shows. “
The Punk Singer (2013) Dir. Sini Anderson. 1h 22m.
“ A documentary film about singer Kathleen Hanna who fronted the bands Bikini Kill and Le Tigre, and who was a central figure in the riot grrrl movement. “ (Kathleen Hanna, Bikini Kill, Kim Gordon, Sleater-Kinney, Bratmobile, Joan Jett, +) kathleen hanna movie.
Dirty Girls (1996) Dir. Michael Lucid. 18 minutes.
“ Shot in 1996 and edited in 2000, a short documentary about a group of 13-year-old riot grrrls in Los Angeles who were socially ostracized at their school by their peers and upperclassmen. “ no bands in this one but i think it’s cool seeing the effect & inspiration of riot grrrl etc
UPDATE:
She’s Real (Worse Than Queer) (1997), Part 1, Part 2. Dir. Lucy Thane. 24 minutes+27 minutes.
“ A document of the Riot Grrrl and Queercore scene in the 1990s, the film has been screened at film festivals around the world, written about in zines and academic books and has been included in the curriculum of a number of university courses.” (Team Dresch, Tammy Rae Carland, Tribe 8, Cheesecake, Cypher in the Snow, +) this one has more to do with the queercore scene, but i enjoyed it. it has bands i’ve liked but have never seen footage of. it touches on a lot of the issues of exclusivity in these scenes.
The Riot Grrrl Collection (2013) Editor: Lisa Darms
not a doc! but this is a book & like a very expensive & hard to find book, & i have the whole thing in a pdf but u didn’t get it from me. photos of 90s riot grrrl zines. i haven’t gone through the whole thing. enjoy “ The Riot Grrrl Collection reproduces a sampling of the original zines, posters, and printed matter for the first time since their initial distribution in the 1980s and ‘90s, and includes an original essay by Johanna Fateman and an introduction by Lisa Darms.”
