“are you alright, sweetheart? you’ve been quiet today,” deokjun commented, looking over at her on the other side of her couch, arm behind his head as he lounged. “extra busy schedule today? or something else on your mind?” @rvmatty​

“so, first few months? how are you adjusting?” deokjun asked, smiling at the younger boy. he and dongeun were largely opposites, but when theyd met during training, they’d really bonded. jun considered him a little brother, almost. sort of like seokjung. “not too overwhelming, i hope...” @rvdongeun​

“you know, i was kind of worried about s.o.s debuting,” deokjun admitted. “so many other companies will have a shiny new boy group and let their old groups decay and... maybe there’s still an opportunity for that to happen, but so far at least, i’m just real glad that we’re still getting ample attention.” @rvxseokjung @rvsowon​

“if i say something weird, please don’t hesitate to correct me,” jina said with a wry smile, adjusting her phone that was open to voice memos and brushing invisible dust of her notebook. “i’m used to interviewing wrestlers, not idols. but i’m excited to be able to sit down with you today~”

“no, honestly, i’m kind of out of my element here too-- no worries,” deokjun admitted with a little laugh. “usually it’s a group interview, and sowon does most of the talking. it’s pretty rare that i do a solo one. i’m excited too, though-- it’s nice to meet you.”

“That’s true. I just wish learning how to learn and think didn’t involve like… making kids feel bad for not picking something up as fast as the teachers would like. Like, maybe it was a motivator for some kids? And maybe kids didn’t have the same experience with teachers as I did. But it definitely made me just… not want to come in to school a few times.”

“the schooling system needs an overhaul in general,” deok admitted. “i say this as a pretty smart guy who did really well in school-- a lot of good students aren’t inherently smarter. they’re just better at the skill of being a student. you could not retain any of that knowledge or ever be able to put it to use, but as long as you know how to get the teacher to hold your hand, you’ve got good grades.”

“So-and-so paved the way for these kids, they’re just copying them because it’s trendy to keep your shoe untied now, nobody does it like them. The sheer disrespect,” Hyunsik joked.

“well, jokes on both of us. into the spiderverse did it first anyway, so even our hypothetical is plagiarism,” deokjun laughed

“ah,” he answered, giving a little nod. “that’s shit luck, man. i’m sorry. but you know what they say– you’re either dating for marriage or heartbreak. if you’re not right for each other, this needs to happen so you can both find someone who is.”

“is that something they say? that’s a new one; don’t think i’ve ever heard it before,” he replied, letting go a little laugh. “you’re right, though. i’ve been trying to remind myself that, and it’s helping ease everything a little. i think i’m just too much in the thick of the grieving part right now, though.”

“i’m sorry,” she whispered into her phone, letting her head rest on the steering wheel as she sobbed. “i… thank you.”

“don’t apologize, matika. i’m glad you called me,” he answered her, pulling out of his parking spot. and he was-- she was clearly in a lot of distress. it was better she call him to come get her than somehow get hurt, or have to deal with this alone.

it was a short drive, just like he promised, and he parked next to her, sliding out of his car and opening her driver’s side door, crouching beside the vehicle and resting a hand on her arm. “i’m here, i’m here,” he soothed. “what do you need me to do?”

“you can’t just say something like that to me and not elaborate,” sanghee answered, shaking his head. “things with yoojung not going well?”

he gave a sad smile and a little chuckle. “they haven’t been going well for a while now,” he admitted. “i think i’m just not what she needs. and it’s hard to argue with that, but it doesn’t make it hurt any less.”

“i…i don’t think i am,” she whimpered softly, rubbing her cheeks with the heel of her hand. she was shaking. “i pulled into a parking lot when i started crying. two blocks away from your dorm. the convenience store. i….. i can’t drive like this….”

“it’s fine. you don’t need to drive anywhere,” he told her softly, grabbing his keys and writing a quick note for his roommates to let them know where he was. with that, he was out the door. he was happy that he’d become an idol later than some-- he’d already had a car and known how to drive, and it was a skill that he was grateful for in times like these. “you’re on speaker in my car, okay? i’m on my way. five minutes, tops.”

“I guess teachers really wanted to have us set up in case we suddenly lost any technology that made calculations. You never know when disasters going to strike, right?”

“yeah, for sure. and like... i guess learning and remembering the actual stuff isn’t the point of school, no matter what teachers say. the point is learning how to learn and think. so i can’t be too frustrated.”

“No kidding… sometimes it feels like netizens would criticize someone for having one of their shoes untied or something.”

“Who knows, it could be an issue that I’ve just been way too good at ignoring for all these years after graduation,” Jaewook laughed. “Nah, it really isn’t. Which is good, because I really remember fretting about when I was younger.”

“they really made it seem like knowing it was the end-all be-all, but even i just use my calculator on the rare occasion i need to do some math. and i liked math.”

“Are you forgetting what country we’re in?” He says teasingly, offering a fake serious demeanor before shifting into a playful smile. “How smart you are is like…..I don’t know, a gift from god. If you go and show you can impromptu solve math problems you’ll be labeled a genius and old people will adore you.” The thought made Royi think back to his highschool days, when the teachers and damn near every adult around him pushed him to study more often. “Yeah, it’s a great talent, bro.”

“is that rewind’s demographic, though? how will the teenaged girls feel when the fandom is overrun with ahjumma’s and ahjusshi’s?” deokjun asked with a little laugh.

“Didn’t someone say anything is a talent if you try hard enough?”  The producer looks over at him a friendly smile on her face as she imagines him going on the show and showing off his math skills. “I think it could work out…. Or maybe you can show some of her other talents??? Maybe you can write it down as like ‘math wizard’ or something?”

“i’m sure i’ve heard that once or twice in my lifetime,” he answered with a tiny laugh, smiling back at her. “math wizard is a cooler way of framing it though, i have to say. i’ll take note of that.”

it was a ridiculous hour. she felt bad for bothering him, but she didn’t know who else to turn to. she didn’t want to bother her members, and she didn’t really have anyone else she felt close enough. so with shaky fingers, she dialed deokjun’s number from the driver’s seat of her car, tears streaming down her face. “are … are you busy? i really need you right now,” she said as soon as he picked up. @rvdeokjun​

honestly, he wasn’t sure why he was awake. his brain was going a mile a minute, and he couldn’t focus, laying it bed staring at the ceiling. while he otherwise might be annoyed to get a call at such a late hour, he was actually kind of relieved-- it was distracting him from himself. that relief dissipated almost immediately though when he heard  his voice, worry sinking deep in his stomach. “matika, are you alright? what happened?” he asked quickly, already getting up and getting dressed while he held his phone between his ear and shoulder. “where are you right now?”

“it is but like… it’s mnet. scummy is what they’ve always stood for. i just hope someday i can be on like…. a show with my moms and really show how great they both are, and how they’ve shaped me into who i am today, you know?”

“i really hope so too, dokyoung. and for what it’s worth....i think it’s possible. it’s doable in this lifetime,” he insisted earnestly.
