“i love you too, though!” jieun said, eyes starting to fill up with tears. “i want you both in my life…” she started chewing on her bottom lip. “i…..i guess i won’t text you during idol project then?”

“jieun, stop please. i don’t want us both to start sobbing. it’s different, and we both know it,” she answered, trying to keep her composure. she let out a little laugh. “you probably shouldn’t have anyway-- don’t they take your phones?” she paused. “this isn’t forever. just for now. we need space.”

“well, thank you. it’s more hard work than anything i think but i’m trying really hard!”

“that shines through,” yihwa assured her. “and listen-- for as long as this show goes, if you need any help with like...lyrics or anything, i’m here.”

“well, i mean…. you know that, but you don’t know that,” joonie insisted, trying to reason. “like…if anyone can push and break down those boundaries, it’s you. i have complete faith you could do whatever you want, especially with idol project fame to ride.”

she rolled her eyes. “well, thanks. that’s nice of you to say. i mean, when i end up singing ginny style songs, i’ll be happy to say i told you so, but the sentiment is nice.”

rveunyeol​:

“I guess that is the best we can do. We’ll show ‘em what they’re missing if they pass us up,” Eli agreed. “Thanks - I don’t think I have any help that’d be much use on this show, but if you need a cheerleader or something, I can be that.”

“hey, don’t underestimate how far moral support can get you. this shit is so isolating-- especially the way we’re literally all pitted against each other, scrambling for approval,” yihwa said seriously. “i’m in your corner if you’re in mine. that’s powerful.”

“yeah, you’re right. i guess i’ve gotten used to just shutting that out because…when you’re an idol, especially on the level of reign…..letting fan opinions, good or bad, shape how you see yourself just seems dangerous,” they admitted.

"yeah, you’re right, to a certain point. you shouldn’t be relying on it solely, that’s for sure. but sometimes it’s nice to just give yourself a wakeup call, and i love you, but you need one.”

rveunyeol​:

“I appreciate the concern, but… really, you don’t have to be. I don’t how the rest of them are feeling, exactly, but I know it’s kind of a longshot that I have any chance getting anywhere,” Eli said. “I’m still going to try, though. I think I owe that to myself, at least.”

“listen, i’m a longshot too. for different reasons, but.... i get it,” she answered. she knew she wasn’t conventionally attractive-- she’d been turned away by enough agencies to get that message clearly. “showing our best work is the only thing we can do. and i’m not much of a dancer, but if you need any help at all, let me know.”

“i’ll take your word for it, then– clearly i have some sort of bias against myself,” she sighed, laughing slightly

“don’t we all? i don’t think any of us truly view ourselves justly, for better or worse. it’s nice to have people to reality check us.”

“it’s not cocky, yihwa, it’s just true. i really think you could be the next big thing. and i think this is a great opportunity for people to finally se it.” he felt for her– she was like him in a lot of ways. both were incredible vocalists who didn’t fit conventional beauty standards. honestly, the only difference was that he was a dude, so people cared about that less.”

“i’m resigned to being a big r&b soloist at the most. and you know, i like that music. i’m not to mad at that concept. but it just sucks that i don’t have more options-- and i know that those are all the options.”

“oh! that’s really nice of you to say,” she admitted, smiling. “i feel like i’ve gotten so much better since then, but it’s still really hard. korean and vietnamese aren’t super similar languages, after all.”

“i think that is just more of a testament to you, though,” yihwa insisted. “they’re not similar languages, but you’re learning and maintaining them both really well. you’re a smart cookie.”

jieun listened, eyes flickering down to her lap as she did. this was a lot to have to process, after all. “i…..” she frowned, trying to figure out what to say. because it’d be a lie to say it wasn’t mutual. she loved joonie, and she still did, but that didn’t mean yihwa wasn’t also kind and pretty. “i guess that makes sense,” she answered quietly, eyes still trained down. “i mean…..it’s not as one sided as you think it is, i guess….”

“i....you need to not be giving me hope like this. it’s going to make it worse,” yihwa joked sadly. “you love him, jieun. i know you too well for you to even try to say otherwise. i just... i’ll just keep my distance for a bit. wait for this to die out for both of us. we can both get over it. and then we can try again. i just...you deserved an explanation.”

“no, you’re so right. like… besides the mo mo mo special video, i’ve never had a stylist go to work on me before. it’s making it set in for sure,” she agreed. “even before…i knew cameras were on me rehearsing, but this…. is bigger.”

“yeah like..... we’ve been recorded all week, but this is the first time it feels like we’re really on tv,” yihwa agreed. “i’m sure you’ll do great, though. i’ve seen you in g-project covers. you’re really solid-- especially considering you have a language barrier on top of it all.”

“wait, did i do something wrong?” jieun asked quickly, wringing her hands nervously. “it feels like you’ve been avoiding me lately. and you’re my best friend– i don’t want to have done something wrong and not know. if i need to apologize for something, please, tell me what it is…” @rvhwa​

yihwa bit her lip, pushing her hair behind her ear. “i.....you didn’t do anything wrong. i just have been dealing with something,” she said, biting her lip. “i just....i think i have a big crush on you, jieun. or...i mean, i know i do. and it isn’t fair of me, because i know you’re with joonie and you guys are happy, and i’m happy for you. but i think i need to not be around you as much because....it just makes it worse. and it hurts.”

“i just want to know– how wild is it that the first time people hear your voice on national television, you’ll be covering one of the best vocalists in our industry,” joonie said. “seriously– that’s such a big rub for you. and the fact that we all know that you can do that and kill it? nuts.” @rvhwa​

“i’m still going nuts thinking about it. and i think i can really nail it, too,” yihwa said with a grin. “maybe that’s cocky of me but....i have a damn good voice. i think i can do this song justice.”

“Not really what I wanted to hear, but probably what I needed, realistically,” Eli said with a nod. “They ramped up dance practice since we’re going on the show, but it’s still probably not as much as it should be.”

“please don’t take this the wrong way, because you’re super talented but.... maybe sending you guys on the show wasn’t a great idea. i know kiyoung got super far last season but... it just feels like liberty is setting you guys up to embarrass yourselves all for a cheap follow boost for their socials, you know?” yihwa said softly

“you know, i haven’t ever dressed particularly masculine before. i didn’t think it would suit me, but i kind of like it,” hoa admitted, looking at her outfit for the idol project audition stage. “the suspenders are really fun…”

“honestly, you look hot. it really looks good,” yihwa answered, looking at her own outfit. “i think our outfits are really cool too. there’s just something about being dressed and made up that makes this all feel more real...”

“Okay, I have never practiced dancing so long in my entire life,” Eli admitted. They danced every now and again, but it was for fun and not anything serious. Idol Project prep was a whole different beast. “I’m going to get used to it, I have to–but seriously, I don’t know how y’all keep it up. Tell me your secrets.”

“part of it is just...time. like i’ve been a trainee for a while at this point. the more you work, the easier it is to pick things up,” yihwa admitted. “i know that’s not really the answer you want, though-- i doubt liberty gives you all that much dance practice and idol project is so soon...”

“you think so?” jinjoo asked, biting her lip. “people say jewel are just like us, and they have no altos… but i trust your judgement…”

“no, people say jewel are a basic watered down version of you. and honestly? that’s partly their direction, but partly just the lack of diversity in their voices. i think so, anyway.”
