Hagrid’s concern would have been touching if Fabian deserved it. He’d never played sick before, and the guilt was weighing heavily on him. In all of his years of suffering from the curse in his veins, it seemed like a cruel joke to him that some children might wish for illness if only for an excuse to miss out on the very things he dreamed of being part of. Fabian had thought faking ill this one time would have been for a noble cause, but as the hours ticked by with no sign of Glenda, Fabian knew that he had made a terrible mistake.
“Please, Hagrid, don’t count me with the rest.” He requested, staring at his lap, unable to meet Hagrid’s eye. “I don’t- it’s not the same. I don’t deserve to be counted with them. It doesn’t- it doesn’t feel right.” Fabian certainly didn’t deserve the same level of concern as those who had been so violently attacked, or Glenda who was still missing. Even had Fabian been truly sick, what was a blood malediction next to all of that? Nothing but a bit of rotten luck and an accident of birth.
Rubeus placed a hand on the side of Fabian’s bed and frowned. “Oh, come on now, Fabian. Don’ talk about yerself that way.” Rubeus adjusted the way he was sitting, trying to figure out what sort of wisdom he could impart on the boy in front of him. It wasn’t something he could easily understand, Fabian’s illness. But even if he didn’t truly get that, he at least understood what it was like to be different, and the pity and sympathy that could come with that.
“It’s different, yer situation, yes.” Rubeus said, smiling at Fabian in hopes that it would bring up his mood. “But that don’ mean you don’ deserve to be worried over.” Rubeus glanced to his left and right, and then leaned in like he had a big secret to tell. “Just between you an’ me, I always liked you most. --- Yer a good kid, so don’ go sellin’ yourself short now, understand?”
