In our second installment of predominant race/ethnicity city maps, we take a look at the most Latino/Hispanic City in the United States: El Paso, Texas. El Paso is about 80% Latino/Hispanic. It’s worth noting that a slightly different methodology could reveal El Paso as one of the whitest cities as well. How is that possible? Well, the Census does not consider race and Latino/Hispanic origin as mutually exclusive. These are treated as separate categories. In El Paso, over 86% of the Hispanic/Latino residents also selected “White” as their race. For our purposes though, “white” is denoted as “White Non-Hispanic.”

Unlike Detroit, the vast majority of tracts within El Paso and outside El Paso city proper are predominately Latino/Hispanic. Though, there is a notable White pocket in the northeast. The reasons for this are well beyond the scope of these maps but one immediate difference is that El Paso doesn’t really have suburbs in the same way that Detroit does. Likewise to the same migration patterns, White flight, and so forth.

Stay tuned for the (potential) map of highest proportion of non-White Hispanic/Latino people.
