Lucas nearly contained his chuckle, but there was little hope when he knew what Sapphire had in store later tonight. "Oh, he is working his magic, I'm sure." As much as her, he still struggled to take his eyes off the pair. His best friend, her sister. "Do you feel devious at all tonight, Scarlett?" Lucas asked, a simple plan forming for a simple situation, and neither of them really had to be caught in the crossfire.
At that question, Scarlett's eyes finally dragged away from Sapphire and Caisson to look at Lucas. Her brow was deeply furrowed as she tried to figure out what he could possibly mean by that. "I'm not exactly the devious type..." She responded cautiously, but she would be lying if she said she wasn't curious. "Why?"
Logan hadn't been masquerading as this new version of himself for very long. He had used it as a lifeline and a distraction. A role to play in a time when he couldn't stomach his real life. Spending one single moment without her was unbearable, but Logan had to bear it. They didn't have a choice, that much had been made clear. It wasn't as hard as they thought it would be, working at Angel Capital. Maybe they had been listening after all when their dad went on about work, the company, the Hunter legacy... Logan's thoughts were thankfully interrupted by the arrival of Scarlett Vandervort.
"Hi Scarlett," he smiled. They'd missed her, truly. Their timing had always been terrible, he thought. It didn't matter, though, it was just good to see her now. "Thank you-," he chuckled, holding his arm out for her to take- "You look beautiful. I'm glad you could make it, I know how busy you are taking on the world. Do you want a drink when we get in there? It might help if you get cornered into awkward small talk with my dad. He's kinda useless at these things without my mom on his arm."
"Thank you. I did what I could on short notice." Scarlett laughed softly, not actually all that sure about how she managed to get ready and get here in twenty minutes. She hoped he wasn't just saying that to be nice. "I always have time for you, Logan. Besides, I shockingly have no tests or papers due this week." Unless there was something she had forgotten... but surely not. Pushing down her anxiety, she focused her attention back on them, truly flustered at how handsome they looked. "Yes, please. Just some sparkling wine."
Taking his arm, she let herself be guided into the event, "He is? That's really quite sweet. Is your mom not here today?" She wanted to ask why she was here. This all seemed very important and Logan was dressed so nicely; was something happening with the company?
The excitement and thrill of being matched with a mystery partner had been slowly waning for Benji as he'd sat on the edge of the bed, his elbows braced on his thighs as he listened to other party-goers move through the hallway outside. He had a feeling his match wasn't going to show up.
He was about to give up and help himself to the champagne when the sound of a key in the lock drew his attention back to the door and the familliar face it had revealed. Scarlett Vandervort. Their one and only date - if you could call it that- was seared into Benji's mind, along with the feeling of Jason's fist colliding with his face. As nice as Scarlett was, he didn't fancy a second round and from the look on her face, it seemed like she didn't either. "This is awkward."
Awkward. That was one word for it. Someone really must be messing with them because this couldn't be a coincidence. A sigh escaped her as the door clicked shut behind her. "Listen, Benji..." Scarlett sat her bag and coat down on the table and moved closer to himānot too close though. "I don't know what's going on, but I didn't put my name down for this and I certainly didn't pick something Iā..." She snatched up the card that had apparently been written by her and furrowed her brow. "What on earth is The Manhattan Swirl?" Was thatā... Was that a sex position?
Lucas had made a successful tour of the hall greeting the right people, but his attention had never truly left the filthy rich trailer trash worshipping tequila. Scarlett's appearance nearly caught him off-guard as he watched her sister pour salt on her own shoulder like a goddamn piece of steak. "Oh he would," he muttered in half amusement, half je ne sais quoi. "And so would she. Cupid's done well already."
There was nothing Scarlett would have liked more than to turn her head to look at Lucasāsweet, charming Lucasābut she simply couldn't look away from the horror that was Sapphire and Caisson. "That can't be hygienic." There were literal rooms above their heads, why were they insisting on eating each other in front of the bar? "I was under the impression that cupid would be working his magic behind closed doors."
How do I politely ask someone to slam me against a wall and make out with me
Scarlett and Sapphire always had a tense relationship, but it had been worse since Sapphire had come back. Their only saving grace was hardly seeing each other. She swallowed back what she'd really like to say, spiteful as it was, and asked, "What are you doing here, Scarlett?"
Scarlett's brow twitched ever so slightly at her sister's sidestepping of a potential argument. When did that ever happen? "I'm attending my friend's birthday party. You can do that, you know? Go to a party and not suction yourself to another human being."
William watched as she re-entered the conversation and raised a curious brow at her. Burnout, perhaps? This was still Scarlett Vandervort, after all. There had to be a perfectly boring explanation for her less than fresh attitude. William looked her up and down, head canting to the side, before he finally answered, "Can I help you with something?"
Scarlett didn't like how he was looking at herālike he knew something. Did he know? It was a well known fact that if you needed something on the Upper East Side, William Huntzberger could get you it with very little questions asked, but going to him would be to sell your soul. She wasn't that desperate... Right? "Iā..." Her hand shook against the champagne flute. "No. No, I think you've done enough for me." She hadn't confronted him for what he caused in high school, but was still causing an anger to rise within her.
Having said that she would meet Logan at his father's office in thirty minutes, Scarlett was there with ten minutes to spare and entirely overthinking what their texts had meant. Had he just been inviting her to the event, or was the intention that she would be their date? Did people have dates to networking events? Was it a friend date or a date date? It hadn't been too long since he had broken up with Isobel, so surely it was just friendly? Did she want it to not be? It's not like they hadn't almost been something on more than one occasion... Her thoughts flickered to Jason and the moments they almost kept having, but she quickly pushed those aside. Gosh how she wished people would just voice their intentions.
Not wanting to wait outside, Scarlett entered the building just as Logan appeared. She smiled and stepped towards them, "Hi Logan." They still made her nervous, even now; even after finding out that William was the reason for her thinking he was messing with her in high school. "You look... really good."

This wasn't happening. The universe must be messing with her because Scarlett Vandervort had not put her name into that letterbox. She had learned her lesson with these kinds of match up events back when she had been paired with Jake Hunter and he had tried to kiss her. This wasn't fun for her, and being dragged away from Jason... Well! That certainly wasn't fun either. Maybe she should have ignored it in favour of spending the rest of the evening with someone she actually wanted to be around, but she felt bad knowing that someone would be waiting for her with no idea what had happened. Her plan was simple: go up there, explain what had happened, then leave.
Scarlett was already incredibly late when she reached the hotel room and unlocked the door, her mind racing a mile a minute as she tried to figure out what she would say to whoever she had kept waitingāand then she saw him. "Benji." The universe really was playing a sick sort of game.

Returning from the bathroom and feeling energised, Scarlett made her way to the bar for another drink, when she was stopped in her tracks by the horror that was Sapphire and Caisson. "He wouldn't.."
@lucasbaizen-tfr
William had almost walked on by, not realising it was Scarlett Vandervort sat alone in her booth. She looked... well, he wouldn't comment. It wouldn't have taken a genius to see that she wasn't having the night of her life. Confident that Logan was thoroughly distracted by hosting, he slipped into the seat across from her and tapped her glass. "Have you found the answers you're looking so intently for in there, Scarlett?"
When he tapped her glass, Scarlett blinked a few times and then had a delayed jump at his appearance. "Iā... What?" Her brow furrowed as she looked between William and her champagne flute. "Um, no. Unfortunately not. Can I help you with something?" She wasn't sure that she had the patience to deal with this man anymore.
