Kon liked to think he was pretty smart. He had been the quickest learner out of the test tube. Not that there was much competition.
He might not know how to do trigonometry but he knew his stuff when it came to rebranding. He still knew when he was beat. Young Justice had hit a major snag. They had all expected Tim to know what to do, and he did⊠sort of. He happened to have just the person.
Kon wasnât expecting him to bring his little sister in. He could have made a joke about bringing Jon in too. Instead, he greeted her with a quick nod. She was his expert on all things poison, apparently.
Not knowing how to start this, Kon looked at the files Tim carried with him. âSo, back to square one?â
The only sound that escapes Dahlia is a sharp breath in before she holds onto him tightly, pressing her face into his neck to protect her eyes and face from the wind as they fly. Sheâs heard from her brothers that if sheâs ever flown by someone at high speeds to keep her eyes closed and face protected so she doesnât get windburn. She wraps her good arm around his shoulders, keeping her injured one tucked between them protectively. She gives him a nod to signal sheâs ready to get out of there as soon as he is.
Kon is bringing them halfway around the world in seconds. She already had her face covered, vaguely he worried about other exposed skin. Possibly irritated from the high speed.
Either way itâll get taken care of. Heâs bringing her down in a Gotham based hospital in no time. One specifically for heroes - so theoretically there wonât be any unwelcome questions.
Dahlia takes one look at the hospital and clings to Kon a bit tighter. She doesnât like hospitals, they remind her too much of being scrutinized and observed like she was back in the league when Ras would watch her training, judging her and always finding something wrong to punish her for. âT-Tompkins clinic. Take me there. She knows about Batman. She helps us.â She tells Kon, trying and failing to keep her voice from shaking. She just hopes he assumes itâs from blood loss and not fear, forgetting for a moment that he can hear her heartbeat and how itâs racing with fear like a jackrabbits.
âTompkins⊠TompkinsâŠâ his head swivels around. Looking carefully for any indicator of which way to go. Ultimately he canât find one and Dahlia seems in no condition to act as his GPS.
He steps back, away from the doors of the hospital. She probably doesnât have much time to get all this set right. âYâgotta beacon or anything, D?â Any way to contact the family would be best. If she doesnât have any - which he wouldnât expect her to considering the league - then this hospital will be the best they can do.
Dahlia opens her mouth to speak and ends up coughing heavily, blood splattering her hand where she covers her mouth. She curses in Arabic before giving him an address in the Bowery. âSorry, youâll want to clean your uniform after this.â
He zips to the address, depositing her on the bed when heâs let in. Itâs like a switch is flipped and heâs playing second fiddle to Dr.Tompkins, repeating back information and explanations.
As she gets to work he stays by Dahliaâs side, keeping himself in plain sight. He tries not to cringe when his hand smears some of her blood. A stray drop on his jacket. Heâs more concerned about her wellbeing over his appearance anyways.
Konâs head snaps to attention every time the doctor begins his name. In record time theyâve got Dahlia bound. Bones painfully set, blood wiped away, Dr.Tompkins is still wrapping bandages around the more surface injuries. After the rush of activity, it goes quiet. Kon half expects Dahlia to pass out now that the adrenaline is winding down.
Dr. Tompkins is no nonsense ordering Kon around and instructing him to fetch her supplies and hold dahlias leg steady while she wraps and sets her injuries. Once she finishes she gives dahlia some strong painkillers and says sheâs going to go inform Batman that Dahlia is here and leaves her alone with Kon.
Dahlia is leaned back on a pillow on the hospital bed set up so sheâs sitting up. She looks exhausted and pale but not quite like sheâs about to keel over anymore.
She looks at Kon and gives a weak smile, âhey, thank you, for all of this, for saving me, getting me to the clinic and helping the doctor patch me up. Iâm sure youâre probably wondering what went wrong.â
âI think Iâve got a decent guess,â he joked. He doesnât need thanks for saving her, heâd do it regardless. Heâs just glad he got there in time.
Kon canât help keeping an ear on her heart rate, itâs calmed down considerably. âIf you want to sleep, you can. Iâll stay here at least until B and Red come.â
âI figured you at least deserve an explication for why you had to fly halfway around the world. Ras discovered Iâve not been living in the shadows as Robinâs weapon and Iâve been living as my own person,â dahlia explains with a sigh
"Well," the urge for some sort of 'I told you so' was a hard one to force down. That wasn't what she needed to hear right now. "I figured something like that had happened. I'm just glad you called, glad I could get to you in time."
He sat back in his chair, looking around the room and avoiding her gaze. "Does this mean you have a target on your back now? Can't imagine he'll just let you get away."
âProbably. Theyâll want to retrain me or kill me. Iâm honestly shocked they havenât detonated the bomb in my head. Perhaps it does something else. â she says reaching back and idly stroking the spot where she can feel the scar on the back of her head from the implant.
ââŠyeah,â Kon wasnât sure how to respond to that. She said it so casually, like her potential death didnât mean much in the long run.
âMaybe itâs a dud? But uh - after this Iâd imagine the bats have some protocol for hiding you around?â His eyes flicked to his wrist, like he had ever worn a watch.
Dahlia makes a face as if only just now remembering her family. âFuck. Theyâre going to freak out. Damian is gonna be pissed and yell at Lady Tahlia and the Demonâs head and dick is gonna get all protective. Jasonâs gonna say he told me so about going back and Timâs gonna get all paranoid again. I donât even wanna think about what cass Nd Bruce are gonna do,â she groans rubbing her face. âCan I just hide out on the Kent farm for a couple of weeks till it blows over and they forget?â She asks half joking
âYou donât get it Kon. Iâm the baby of the family in their eyes. Damianâs poor twin who was raised as a weapon and not a person, who didnât even know what a hug felt like until I was twelve. Theyâre going to be INSUFFERABLE!â She groans in frustration though thereâs definitely fondness in her voice as she continues talking about her family.
âDick is going to want to tear Lady Tahlias head clean off her shoulders more than he already does. Jasonâs gonna wanna put a bullet between Rasâ eyes. God knows what Tim will do. You know how unhinged he can get when people he cares about are threatened,â she says chuckling at the memory of some of Timâs moreâŠ..eccentric revenges.
âDid I ever tell you that once Damian messed up his files by accident and he made it so that every electronic device Damian used for the next three days played Baby Shark every single time he tried to use it. He even changed his alarm clock.â
Kon fondly nodded at the idea, of course Tim would. "Sounds like him. But seriously! They care about you a lot. They'll be upset on your behalf and maybe a bit totally insufferable, it's just how they show their love. Isn't it?"
As if on queue the doors to the little room were thrown open, bats flooding the small entrance. Kon nodded to them as they did what he assumed was a sweep of the room. When prompted he vacated his seat, lingering back towards the door.
He was glad Dahlia was alright but he was sure the bats would want to talk without him present. He gave her a supportive thumbs up from behind them all.
Dahlia grabs Konâs sleeve and gives him a look that clearly reads as âplease donât leaveâ. As soon as her family is assured the room is secure dahlia is wrapped up in one of Nightwingâs octopus hugs as she calls them.
âAre you okay? What happened? Did Ras do this? Iâm gonna kill him!â Dick says his words going nearly as fast as Impulse when heâs running.
Batman stands beside the bed putting a hand on my shoulder and asks firmly, âwhat happened?â
I sigh half frustrated, half fond, âthe Demonâs head and Lady Tahlia learned somehow that Iâve been neglecting my duties as Damianâs shield and havenât been living as his servant. They wanted to âretrainâ me. They also figured out I was there to investigate a poisoning I was looking into for Young Justice. I called Superboy to get me out since I knew heâd be listening since I was there for their team.â I explain
Kon gives a meek wave to the family, heâll stay as long as Dahlia wants him to.
âDoc said sheâd be alright, with enough rest of course. She should probably stay off her leg for a while- but uh- what with the league,â
He shrugged a bit. He wasnât sure how much rest would be possible with the League of Assassins out to get you. Hopefully enough for Dahlia to get better without any lasting issues. When Batman turned his gaze on Kon he made sure not to shrink under it. Heâd weathered a lot of stare downs from the man in the past.
Batman approaches Kon and puts a hand on his shoulder, âthank you for helping Dahlia escape the league and getting her to a doctor. I appreciate that you are a friend to her.â
âStop getting all mushy, Father. Itâs unbecoming,â Damian jokes as he takes a seat beside my bed.
I roll my eyes and sigh fondly, âthank you by the way, Kon. I donât think Iâve thanked you for saving me yet.â
âAny superboy wouldâve done it,â he couldnât help the slight way he preened under the attention. Doing and being good, unsurprisingly, made him feel confident.
Getting marks from Batman of all people too⊠he was definitely going to hold this over Timâs head. In a funny way.
He took post out of the way while the family caught up. Interjecting only to offer that Dahlia could come to the farm if they wanted her around supers. He knew the Bats were well equipped to take care of their own but offering couldnât hurt.
Batman rejects the idea of me going to the farm. âNormally Iâd be fine with it, but until we know if the league is going to come after her itâs better for Dahlia not to be around civilians too much,â he explains.
Dahlia gasps, her eyes widen, âoh my gods I didnât even think of that. If I stayed at the farmhouse they wouldnât hesitate to kill ma or pa Kent to get to me.â
Batman nods his head. âItâs safer for everybody if you stick to only being around people in the hero community who can defend themselves until we confirm if the league is going to chase you. You should be careful too Superboy. We donât know if the league knows it was you who helped Dahlia escaped them, so they might try to come after you.â
âwe were outta there in a flash, Iâd be shocked if they knew. But youâre probably right,â
No sense in risking Ma or Pa. Of course, to be sure that meant Superboy couldnât go home to them. His mind drifted, maybe he could spend time with Lex. He was sort of able to defend himself, being a supervillain.
âHow will you know if- when- the league is coming? Or when theyâre not?â
âNever underestimate the League of assassins. Youâd be amazed at how much theyâre able to pick up on. Itâs not to Batmanâs level but itâs still extremely impressive,â Tim warns Kon.
Dahlia nods in agreement, âyeah a son you were in that room with me. Iâm pretty sure every room in that place has some sort of surveillance.â
He cringed at that. Definitely couldnât go home then. Konâs body swayed to the side, stepping closer to his friend. His mind kept drifting even as he spoke.
âSo, Dahliaâs set here with you guys. Sheâll be safe. Iâm always on call, like usual. What comes next?â
As fun as being absorbed into the family would be, Kon didnât want to be running his entire life. There had to be a way to shake the league. Being in constant fear of what was around the corner would be awful for the Superboy brand.
âWell you could stay at the Young justice base or the manor until we figure out how much the league knows.â Tim suggests looking to Batman for confirmation. Batman nods, âyouâre welcome at the manor so long as youâre careful and avoid the press. Theyâve been around the manor more lately because of dahlia and Damian being in a recent art showcase.â
ââŠavoid the press. Right. Youâre totally talking to the right guy for that,â
There was no heat behind the words but sarcasm didnât stick to his voice either.
âDidnât know they were in a showcase, thatâs cool,â he mumbled aloud, bringing his hand up to cover his mouth slightly, running the pad of his finger over his lip while he thought.
âI gotta take a flight, clear my head. Iâll have to get back to you on where Iâll stay,â
âBe extremely careful to stay out of sight. The league of assassins is cunning and they could try to attack you while youâre flying. I donât want to see you get hurt because you helped me,â
âHey, Iâm bulletproofâ he tapped at his chest. âNot even of this world, Iâll be fineâ
A near blatant lie but not one that mattered too much. He just hoped it provided some comfort as he tried to get out. He would make sure to give himself extra TTK padding though. Not just for Dahliaâs comfort.
âThatâs a lie and we all know it. Just be safe and try to stay out of sight until we know if the league is going to come after you. Hopefully theyâll focus their efforts on chasing me and not you since I know their secrets.â
âYou know Iâm always a shout away,â He gave her a quick nod. With nothing more to say, Superboy took off to go process everything that had happened.
He would end up at the YJ headquarters, at least temporarily. It was almost as comfortable as home and the next best option.
Tim arrives a few days later with a healing Dahlia in tow. âHey, Kon. Weâve decided that until we know if Dahlia is being hunted, having her stay here at the YJ HQ would be smartest. Since the league knows about Wayne manor and the titans tower, but not about this base,â Tim explains helping me tot he couch in the rec room.
I give a crooked grin to Kon, âlooks like weâll be roomies for a bit.â
âOh heck yeah! Weâre gonna have so much fun.â Now having a few days to himself, Kon is feeling much better.
He gets right to it, giving an abridged tour to Dahlia. Heâs sure that Tim will go over it all anyways. âThe rooms are down that way but honestly a lot of the time we just make a fort or pass out on the couch-â itâs a lot easier now. Last time they saw each other was in a high stakes situation. Now, itâs just hanging out in a secret headquarters.
Dahlias leg is in a cast and sheâs still pretty bandaged up but sheâs definitely looking better than she was when he last saw her at the hospital. She looks so much more relaxed than she did then or even in the meeting where Tim first introduced her to the team.
âSo are you the only one whoâs living on the base right now?â She asks settling into the couch with a sigh
âConsistently, yeah. The others all come through but Iâm the only full timer.â
It would be nice to have someone here consistently like himself. The base was huge when you were alone, getting it filled again would be a blessing. Plus he could get better at the multiplayer games with Dahlia here!
âWell, Iâll be here for the next few weeks at least. The league doesnât know about this place so Bruce thought itâd be best if I stayed here with you rather than at the manor. Heâll be stopping by to check on me and so will Tim. But thatâs normal Tim loves spending time here. Heâs always smiling when he gets home from visiting you here.â
Dahlia tells him a big smile on her own face. Sheâs excited at the chance to get to know Kon better
âOh does he now?â Kon made sure to file that information away into his âtease timâ folder.
âBruce had the right idea having you come by. The league isnât getting anywhere near here. Uh-â he looked around, knocking on the center table in the media room, âknock on wood. â So, what do you want to do? need help settling in or anything?â
âMaybe you could give me a tour so I know my way around. That way I donât get lost,â I suggest after thinking for a moment. âTim and Jason will be over later to bring some of my stuff for me to use while Iâm here so I donât have anything right now except the stuff in my backpack but Iâd like to see more of the base. Iâve only been here twice before and Iâve never gotten the chance to explore it.
âGot it!!â Kon had a jump in his step as he turned around, staying off the ground just a second longer than a normal person would. He started talking, filling the silence between them as he walked Dahlia around the base.
Kon fluffed his flannel, fussing with it and checking out his reflection. He wanted to look good for this. He wanted to be impressive. It was funny but he wanted Bernard to like him. He wanted to like the guy too. Tim asked for them to meet and Kon knew Bernard was important to him. Important enough to cut down on time with the team.
He finished gluing down a fake eyebrow piercing, grabbed his glasses and bracelet, and flew out.
They were meeting at a little diner outside of Gotham. Just a bit safer than in city but everyone still minded their own business.
Kon landed a couple blocks down and walked the rest of the way. He put his sunglasses on, using them to push his hair back before he went inside. He didnât have the âConner Kentâ outfit completed, opting to mix parts of that and âSuperboyâ. It left him in patchwork jeans, a flannel with a plain shirt under it, fake brow and ear piercings, a single ring, his leather bracelet, and sunglasses instead of the super regulation readers. He was half-undercover. Half-civilian. He almost hoped that Tim would have some snooty little comment about it.
He looked around for them, wondering if heâd gotten here first.
Tim looks up when he hears the bell jingle at the door and beams when he sees his best friend entering. His heard does a little jump at how good Kon looks. He raises his hand and waves Kon over.
Once Kon is sat down opposite him Tim introduces the blond sitting besides him. âKon, Iâm so glad you could make it. This is my boyfriend, Bernard Dowd. Bern, this is my best friend Conner Kent, but he goes by Kon. Iâve been really excited to introduce you two. Oh and donât worry about keeping our jobs a secret, Bernard is in the loop about all that.â
He nods to Tim before holding a hand out to Bernard, âConner, Kon, or Superboy if youâre a fan.â He winks at the Bernard, lowering his voice just a bit for his cape name.
âItâs really nice to meet you. Timâs pretty, uh, smitten. Heâs happy when he talks about you and all that,â
His eyes dart between the two of them before zeroing in on Bernard.
Bernard laughs as he shakes Konâs offered hand. âIâll stick with Kon I think. Itâs got a certain flair to it that fits you well,â he says winking back at him.
âOh really? You wax poetic about me to all your buddies,â Bernard says teasingly to Tim who turns bright red.
âN-no! I just mention stuff like our dates,â Tim tries to counter, clearly flustered
âOh he definitely does. Wouldnât tell us your name for weeks, leaving early so he can get ready for dates, getting all lovey about it when youâd text himâŠâ
He starts counting off instances on his fingers, looking up at the ceiling as he tries to recall them. Trailing off he turned his attention to Tim, any chance to mess with him was a good one. And this was a good way to get on Bernardâs nice side as well.
âWell, maybe not âwaxing poeticâ⊠it was more in his actions than his words.â
Tim looks utterly betrayed at Kon throwing him under the bus. âYou ass,â he says with a pout kicking Konâs shin under the table.
Bernard just laughs, a beaming smile covering his face. âAwe donât be mad at him. I think itâs really cute,â he comforts Tim leaning over to kiss his cheek.
Tim relaxes at that and gives a gentle smile back at Bernard. Itâs easy to see how utterly smitten Tim is with the blonde.
âNot yet, we were waiting for yo-â Tim is cut off by a frantic beeping in his pocket. He pulls out his phone and his face falls. âShit, family emergency.â He says in a tone that lets Kon and Bernard both know itâs a bat thing he canât get out of.
Bernard reaches over and squeezes Timâs hand. âgo babe. Kon and I are fine to have dinner just us. You go be amazing,â he encourages
âLet me know if you guys need any help,â he offered. He knew they probably wouldnât take him up on it but he always offered. He pulled on his earring, watching Tim pack up to go. It might be a bit awkward to start but he liked Bernard. He was sure they could hang out without any issues.
âNah you know Dadâs rule, no metas in Gotham. But Iâll tell for you if that changes. Iâll try to meet up with you both after at the houseboat. Oh and lunch is on me,â Tim says leaving his card with Bernard before kissing Bernard and patting Konâs shoulder as he heads out.
Bernard watches him go and smiles gently. Once Timâs gone he turns and looks at Kon, âso how long have you been in love with Tim?â
Kon laughs a bit. His brows furrowing as he blinks at Bernard, âw-what?â
In love with Tim? He had been a bit jealous when he and Bernard got together. But that was because of the loss of time to the team. He hadnât ever looked at Tim like that.
Bernard smirks, âitâs kinda obvious. You and Tim have been in love with each other for years clearly, even if you havenât realized it. I could tell even back in high school and didnât know about Robin. Iâd watch footage of young justice and it was clear as day that Robin and Superboy were in love.â
Kon shrugged, crossing his arms. This could get awkward. Bernard didnât seem upset by the idea but Kon wasnât prepared for any sort of reverse shovel talk.
âWeâre best friends, we love each other the way that best friends do?â
âNo need to be shy, Iâm not upset. Iâm happy in fact. Because I happen to think youâre hot as hell and I certainly wouldnât say no to you joining me and Tim in our relationship.â Bernard says resting his head on his hands with a smile
It takes Kon longer than heâd like for the words to click. Happy. Hot as hell. Joining him and Tim. When it registers fully he gives a quiet âohâ, his ears burning. Whatâs better than one boyfriendâŠ
âCan you even.. wait a second. Youâre with Tim, and you want to also be with me? This is the first time weâre meeting.â
He squinted across the table at Bernard. Something here felt like a set up. Or maybe like Timâs stalker behaviors were spreading.
âAnd this my dear boy is where I introduce you to a lovely thing known as Polyamory. We all have two hands. Thereâs no reason you Tim and I canât be happy in a three way relationship. As for us just meeting you donât have to give me an answer now. In fact Iâd like it if you didnât. Give it a few days, get to know me, think it over. I donât wanna force you into this. If you do join Tim and I, I want it to be because you really want to, not just because you think itâll make Tim or I happy. I just wanted to open your eyes to the possibility and let you know that if you want to give it a shot, Iâm all for it.â
Bernard is gentle as he explains, staying calm and laying it out. As much as he really wants this for Tim and him, he would never force Kon into a relationship against his will.
âOkay⊠definitely gotta think on that one. Does Tim know youâre asking me?â
He canât help but appreciate Bernardâs candor with this. Polyamory was definitely new to him, having seen it once in a drama-romantasy show Cissie made him watch. It seemed like it would be complicated. Fun, but definitely complicated.
âHe knows that I have a thing for you and that Iâm aware of his crush on you but he doesnât know Iâm asking. He doesnât want to admit just how much he wants this. You know Tim, he doesnât believe he can have nice things. So Iâm taking the initiative Ont his.â
âTake your time. Itâs a big decision after all getting into a relationship, much less one with two people. Just maybe donât take several months,â Bernard says with a chuckle.
âAnyway, letâs get some food. Iâm starving and the smash burgers here are phenomenal.â
âHe seems like heâd be a good sugar daddy, like in that situation. â Itâs mostly the hero thing. Outside of that I work on my grandparents farm, make brand deals, go out to galas. My day job is âInternâ at Lexcorp or âagricultural workerâ. The brand deals are technically still as superboy though.â
He sits back, thinking over his own information before continuing.
âWhen Iâve got time Iâll go out with my friends; Comic-Cons, concerts, whatever we can find. Big fan of Wendy the werewolf stalker and similar shows. And sitcoms are cool too!â
âOh! Iâve watched some of that! Itâs pretty good. Not my favorite show but definitely a fun one. What kind of music do you like?â Bernard asks genuinely interested in getting to know Kon. Heâs someone whose incredibly important to Tim and even if Kon doesnât join their relationship he wants them to be friends because he knows how important it is to Tim that two people he loves so much get along
âNot too picky on music genres. I like binaural music though. The kind you have to listen to on headphones, different tones happening at the same time. You?â Kon is enjoying himself, enjoying getting to know Bernard.
When the waiter comes back with their orders, Kon picks at his food. Enjoying it but more focused on making a new friend.
âOh where you have to have both headphones to get the full song? Iâve heard of that. Itâs really cool and it makes you feel like youâre inside the music. It must feel even more immersive if youâve got enhanced senses like you do.â Bernard replies. He thanks the waitress and munches on his fries.
âSo you live at the Kentâs farm mostly? Timâs told me theyâre really nice people, even told me ma Kentâs pies are to die for. Iâm studying culinary arts and Iâve told him he needs to get me in touch with her so I can ask for her advice on baking. Pastry dough like pie crust are my biggest weakness.â
âA lot of the time yeah. Theyâre really sweet and heâs right, her pies are amazing. If youâve got a favorite flavor then Iâll ask her to make one when the season comes around! â Iâm sure sheâd be happy to have you over. Next time Tim comes sneak on the jet.â
He was only half kidding about sneaking onto the jet. The idea of Tim finding a stowaway Bernard was funny. But the idea of having them both over was an appealing one.
âIf you ever need a taste tester I love a good meal. Pastries or not.â
âWould Ma Kent be okay with an extra visitor? Iâd hate to impose. Especially since she seems like such a lovely woman. I mean I imagine youâd have to be to raise men like Clark and you.â Bernard says with a smile.
âIâve gotten to meet Clark once at a gala. Tim brought me as his plus one and Clark was one of the reporters. He was very polite. You really do look like what I imagine a younger him to look like but with a completely different style. I know youâre his clone and all but knowing and seeing the similarity is really different. I think I like you better though.â Bernard says as if he isnât flirting openly
âMa would love an extra visitor. She keeps asking me to bring Bart back and he almost wrecked the kitchen. Plus, who wouldnât love having you around?â
He flirted back only lightly. Testing the waters, for now.
Happy pride! We are running a promotion here at Superboy-Felt-Like-It-Industries. If someone is being a dickwad this pride you can call on me twice. I will:
A) get Lex to make a sizable donation to LGBTQ+ support for the Metropolis area each time Iâm called
B) put the fear of (Superboy) into them with a (very chill and calm talk about human rights)
Now if YOU make a donation I will convince THE Red Robin to act out x reader fics with me
