Maybe Alfred likes how much attention Arthur gives him, how much effort he puts into swaying him, and can’t help how flattered he feels. The gentle, almost sincere tone Arthur uses, the teasing, Alfred’s never seen Arthur talk to anyone else like this (nobody else is as much of an obstacle) and maybe Arthur actually likes him? He’s whispering all these sweet promises and rewards, and honestly, what have the majority of people he saves ever done to thank him, anyway? Arthur could thank him.

Alfred initially insists he doesn’t need to be thanked, but Arthur points out how even if that’s so, isn’t it more trouble than it’s worth? They do the opposite of thanking him – they make stupid decisions that result in serious consequences and then have the audacity to blame Alfred if he doesn’t get everything exactly right.

We all know he has one, of course it’ll come into play for something like this. 😏

“Villains can have people they care about and want to help, too.”

The mask makes him look distant and intimidating, but without it…he looks so gentlemanly and like, well, a person. A person with thoughts and feelings like anyone else.

I think Alfred could be aware that he’s doing messed up stuff even while having ‘good’ reasons for it, e.g. like Poison Ivy trying to help plants but being entirely destructive towards any human or company that dates threaten them. And of course, this could gradually shift until he’s not even in it for the 'good’ anymore, he’s just having fun.

But if you’d prefer he doesn’t use any kind of good/moral reasoning for his decline, what would you go with instead? Maybe he’s slowly tempted more and more by the idea of revenge?
