Most accounting classes at my school are only online so this semester I decided to take an in person Spanish class to get some human interaction.
Anyways on the first day of class a student asked if it’s okay to use Duolingo to study and the professor made an involuntary disgusted face

Yes. Absolutely.
1. Duolingo is an AI shit hole. They fired all their real, human translators and replaced them with AI
2. All the features that made Duolingo a good app are now hidden behind a paywall
3. The translation is just overall deeply unnatural? Very few people ACTUALLY use the things that they teach you there everyday and how to properly pronounce it.
4. It falls into the 'universal' spanish, leaving you with a knowledge of many accents and words that just aren't used everywhere. Understood? To an extent, very few people truly says 'Quiero un café con leche, porfavor' in a casual setting, learning from real people (or movies! That's how I learnt english) is a much more reliable source. For example, I would say 'me das un café con leche, porfa?' Or 'Me pones un café largo de leche? Gracias' because I use a mix of Venezuelan spanish and Spainish spanish.
5. Any language, not just spanish, is too vast to be learnt through a single app. You have to inmerse yourself in it if you want to truly learn it
6. Duolingo lets you mess up only a certain amount of times before you have to wiat to get more opportunities. Which, yeah, plays part in its whole 'learn through games' advertising, but it doesn't really help in my experience, it only frustrated me further because if I WANT to learn I'm going to mess up, and I want to fix my messing up Now.
7. Relating to the last one, it doesn't really mix the questions much, so I just memorized the ones I messed up on and already knew the answer by the time it rolled up, so it didn't really help me learn.
8. Look me in the eyes and tell me you remember anything you learnt off there. You can't. Because its shit!!!!! It just lets you play without ACTUALLY retaining anything, its all about speed and memorization, no actual learning.
Anyway those r my reasons to why Duolingo is shit!!! Watch movies and slowly learn through multiple mediums, there is no rush when it comes to learning something as changing as language, and what better way than through its media and people?

Well no matter what you do a lot of listening and reading will be required if you wanna be serious about it. Likely thousands of hours. If you can find the correct resources listening and reading may be all you have to do. Search for comprehensible input videos, listening practice videos, and graded readers for this kind of thing. There’s a lot of free resources on YouTube and the wider internet these days especially for more popular languages like Spanish or Japanese. Watching kids tv or watching stuff you already know the plot of dubbed into your target language or rereading books you’ve already read but in your target language can also be helpful. The key to listening and reading practice is to have fun because fun helps your brain retain the information better so don’t force yourself to watch overly boring stuff if you don’t have to.
Some folks prefer to supplement their listening and reading with vocabulary flashcards. This is especially useful if you prefer to jump straight to watching or reading content meant for native speakers. Anki is a flashcard app that is free on desktop and is a one time purchase on mobile phones. It’s very popular with language learners and you can search for free decks to download already made by other learners, many of which also have audio, pictures, or example sentences.
If you prefer a more traditional study regimen in addition to your listening and reading or if there’s very few listening and reading resources for absolute beginners in your target language, apps like lingodeer don’t use AI and there’s language specific apps like Hello Chinese. There’s also a lot of free textbooks available online and a lot of free lecture courses on grammar provided by language teachers on YouTube. Once you get better at listening and reading you can also usually find resources for learners in the language and read grammar explanations in the target language instead of in English or your native language.
I have a list here of free or cheap resources for some popular languages. I haven’t updated it in a bit due to life being busy but I do plan on adding more in the future.

unpopular opinion probably but I actually like that ao3 doesn’t let people take back their kudos.
unlike social media platforms (which ao3 is not) where people unlike stuff whenever they think or find out the original posters’ moral compass doesn’t perfectly align with their own’s or whatever, and “likes” can be taken back at any time, ao3 treats kudos as something sacred. once you give it, it’s the author’s to keep forever.
