Here's some tutorials for background/scene design for an assignment.

Material render
Rendering spheres and cylinders can give us an insight into how light works and break down complex forms like anatomy and environments when we render.
Then can we mix in colour and material to achieve realist form?
A digital tutorial taking through another way to render a bust but now with commentary. As always analysing reference will help you apply believable light to your subject.

BG process
The steps to creating environment art in my opinion are: do a value study. This can be over a small thumbnail. Explore a range and use the value structure of dark in the foreground going to light in background to begin with. Do studies from life. Just the banal potplant at my window taught me alot in this afternoon/dusk light.
Do Master studies. Find a palette you love and limit your time. Don't try and recreate it but get an understanding of theri value, saturation and palette choices.
Finally see if you can bring it all together in one final painting. You set the values now introduce the palette you studied along with some fun textures and shapes. Remember the contrast will be greater closer to the camera/viewer.

Tutorials taking you through study and process of introductory flame loop. Often Fx animators will have a more dynamic, intuitive straight ahead method but this is for those of us beginning with understanding a process.
Week 3 ref exercise
Week 3- Pose drawing
Character design tutorials focusing on reducing down shapes, considering squash and stretch and line and shape contrast for exaggeration.
Week 4 anatomy study
Week 3 sketching from ref
Here's a couple of videos that detail how I break down complex anatomical forms. Thinking in primary shapes, using line contrast to reduce complexity and drawing through to find construction.

Part 2. Getting materials like glass and teeth right is difficult.
Part 1 of a speedpaint process of the penguin. For me reference was key to achieving a new level in realist lighting on such a stylised form.
