Q & A with Your Fave Creators
To celebrate our 10th year, we asked a bunch of you some questions about being a part of the Shinkane fandom. Over the next few weeks, we’ll be posting your answers.
Today, we are featuring @sacred-snakes, a community fan author.
Tell us about the first time you watched Psycho-Pass.
I first watched Psycho-Pass in 2020 during the pandemic era. It was also my first month as a private investigator, so the moment I saw the plot on the wiki page, I knew I just had to watch it. I must have finished catching up in less than a week. It was a headfirst dive into the abyss and there was no looking back for me.
Kogami and Tsunemori have an interesting dynamic. What about it interests you?
It's the mutual trust despite the inherent incompatibility of their beliefs. It's also the uncertainty of what they are to each other, and what they would be to each other in the future. We know they'll be there for each other until the very end. Is that all that they're going to be? Is it enough?
Psycho-Pass has an anime, a manga, a game, and the novels. From all of that, what is your fave canon Shinkane scene?
Oh god, I have several. In no particular order: the first phone call between them in Providence. Akane cutting the call was not only hilarious, but also interesting because I think this was the first time she was openly displeased with him to the point of pettiness. Another one would be their entire sleepless sequence in PP:Movie. Kogami's small moment of vulnerability didn't stand a chance against Akane's earnestness. In my opinion, their best scenes are when they are honest with each other.
What was your inspiration for the piece(s) you made for Shinkane Week?
I've always liked writing them either in the in between or in the near future scenario. After watching PPP, it occurred to me that they might be in their "let's agree to disagree" era. Akane has finally made peace with Kogami's choices, but that probably wouldn't mean condoning them in the future. This led me to wonder how their future relationship would be like, now that they're in the same land and would most likely work together again in the future. She has grown to the point of no longer needing him, but that might not stop her from considering it.
Which Shinkane work are you the proudest of?
It's probably "always somewhere." Those were written as Twitter snippets, and the character limit challenged me to tell a story in the most concise way possible. There was a comment left there by a reader, saying how I pack a lot into less. That made me so happy because that was the goal!
Music can be an influential part of your process. What song(s) do you listen to that have influenced your work? Alternatively, what are your favorite songs that remind you of Shinkane?
Taylor Swift never fails to inspire me because she literally has a song for every scenario. Also! Fall Out Boy, specifically the American Beauty/American Psycho album. I have several Shinkane fics that borrowed titles from songs in that album.
Tell us something that the Shinkane fandom wouldn’t necessarily know.
I have a Dune AU in my drafts that I can never seem to finish.
What is your favorite part about being in the Shinkane fandom?
My favorite part about being in the Shinkane fandom is being surrounded by talented people. I never run out of fics to read or artworks to look at. Everyone is just so inspired and I love that for us.
What are your hopes for Shinkane in future seasons?
That they keep us on the edge like they always have. But also. Subtle flirting.
