Pros of Horsey AU:

Astrid as a competitive jumping champion

Her prize horse, Stormfly, gets injured in a training session gone wrong. Though she’s physically healed, she’s not performing to her usual

The nationals are fast approaching

Her Uncle Finn, who technically owns the horse (and doubles as her coach), makes the call to use a less conventional method with an old friend of the family connection, rather than an expensive rehabilitation specialist, as Astrid would prefer

That’s how she ends up dealing with Hiccup Haddock

Hiccup works as a ranch-hand for his Uncle Spitelout and doubles as a horse-whisperer for those who know how to ask

Astrid thinks Hiccup’s methods are hokey and that he’s more a scam artist trying to make a quick buck given how desperate for money he must be

Everyone knows the Haddocks lost most of their fortune in a terrible barn fire that cost them most of their livestock

Hiccup lost a leg in that fire

he lost his father a few years after

Astrid remembers Hiccup as her main competition in barrel racing as kids… back when he had money to own/ride horses… and had two legs
