Robin Thede makes history on “A Black Lady Sketch Show”
Comedian Robin Thede joined CBSN to discuss her new HBO comedy series, “A Black Lady Sketch Show.” The landmark series was cast, written and directed entirely by black women.
A Black Lady Sketch Show premieres August 2 at 11 on HBO.
Robin Thede grew up in Davenport, Iowa. Her parents continue living in Bettendorf, and her mother has been a state representative for House District 93 since 2009.
The father of double bass drumming, Louie Bellson. SHRED.

Businessman Calvin Beardsley got a commercial license for his experimental Cambridge, Illinois, radio station in 1925. The station signed on as WHBF.
WHBF moved to Rock Island in 1932. That year, The Rock Island Argus newspaper bought the station. WHBF became a CBS Radio Network affiliate.
A sister FM station launched in 1947 (today’s WLKU-FM). WHBF-TV signed on in 1950.
After radio’s golden era ended in the 1950s, WHBF-AM evolved into a middle-of-the-road sound with a playlist of adult standards.
In 1974, it flipped to a country music format known as “Country Sunshine Radio.” WHBF-AM was among the region’s top-rated stations until the 1980s, when the growth of FM eroded the audience for music on AM stations. WHBF became WKBF in 1987 and continued the country format until 1995.
It simulcasted WHTS-FM’s Top 40 format until 1996, when it flipped to adult standards. The owner flipped WKBF back to country music in 2004. Ratings remained low, so programmers flipped the format to liberal talk. The new format attracted a larger audience.
In 2006, Quad Cities Media bought WKBF and flipped it to Christian talk. It became the region’s first full-time Spanish-language station in 2007. In 2013, WKBF began simulcasting on an FM translator.

We moved // Rock Island / Illinois / USA
I found this place while wondering the Village of East Davenport with @imnotactuallyamermaid, and I have to say, it has powerful faerie energies.
“Rock Island——railroad tracks, shacks, small downtown section; and over the bridge to Davenport, same kind of town, all smelling of sawdust in the warm midwest sun. The sun was going down. I walked, after a few cold beers, to the edge of town, and it was a long walk. All the men were driving home from work..wearing railroad hats, baseball hats, all kinds of hats, just like afterwork in any town anywhere. One of them gave me a ride up the hill and left me at a lonely crossroads on the edge of the prairie. It was beautiful there.”

SMF Classics Vol XXII: Michael Nunn - James Toney 05.10.1991
29 years ago today, James Toney knocked out champion Michael Nunn in the 11th round of their fight to take Nunn’s IBF middleweight title. The fight took place in Nunn’s hometown of Davenport, Iowa in John O’Donnell Stadium (now Modern Woodmen Park), an outdoor minor league baseball venue.
Nunn wore white Franklin trunks -
He had NUNN written vertically down the left leg (a nice little touch was a lightning bolt through the U:
He also had a logo on the front right thigh:
A little research indicates that it’s a logo for Castaic Brick. Nothing says “marketing opportunity for a California-based brick company” quite like a boxing match in Iowa.
(By the way - difficult to tell if this is still an ongoing entity, but I did find this commercial.)
Nunn wore standard red gloves and white footwear. Clean white warm-up jacket as well:
Have to appreciate the old-school 80s gear (and the mesh hat!) in his corner:
James Toney wore a black and copper look:
He wore the Jewish Star of David on his front left thigh (a tip of the cap to his former manager, Jackie Kallen), his logo on his front right, and TONEY in italics along the waistband. The side panels had copper piping.
A little detail on the logo:
Trunk detail (including copper piping and waistband):
Great warm-up jacket for Toney:
Classic fight - watch it here:
Respect box.
I went for a walk down by the river and here are some pictures from it. 💩
