This Texas county once was âa model for the country.â Now itâs hospital will turn away COVID-19 patients.
âWe are very proud at this point that our numbers are very low, considering we are an at-risk population and the disparity in medical services and our low socio-economic population,â Joel Villareal, mayor of county seat Rio Grande City, told NBC News. âWe rank as one of the poorest counties in the nation. However, that does not deter us.â
But after Gov. Greg Abbott issued orders for the reopening of the state, overriding local control and decision-making, COVID-19 cases surged.
Now Starr County is at a dangerous âtipping point,â reporting an alarming number of new cases each day, data show. Starr County Memorial Hospital â the countyâs only hospital â is overflowing with COVID-19 patients.
The county has been forced to form what is being compared to a so-called âdeath panel.â A county health board â which governs Starr Memorial â is set to authorize critical care guidelines Thursday that will help medical workers determine ways to allocate scarce medical resources on patients with the best chance to survive.
A committee will deem which COVID-19 patients are likely to die and send them home with family, Jose Vasquez, the county health authority, said during a news conference Tuesday.
âThe situation is desperate,â Vasquez said. âWe cannot continue functioning in the Starr County Memorial Hospital nor in our county in the way that things are going. The numbers are staggering.â
This is such an important and genuinely terrifying post. I could completely go off on the rise of anti-science, but for now Iâll just add: it isnât just boomers that get deceived. This is a warning to all of us.
Pay ATTENTION to what you are being told. If you think you cannot be deceived, you leave yourself open to deception. Question, doubt, research research research. Learn about your personal biases, dig up any subconscious cognitive dissonance. Keep an eye on your mind.
Okay but I did the exact same thing but with orange juice. My partner knows itâs quite sugary, and for my health I cannot have too much sugary drinks (stoopid kidneys!) but occasionally I will want orange juice. Problem is, I also tend to drink way too much of it at once, which is why my partner often has to step in and stop me. So I get to the restaraunt, see orange juice on the menu, realize my partner wonât be there for another 10 minutes, throw away any and all common sense, and begin chugging orange juice. Iâm about two glasses in when I see his car pull up, and I ask the waitress to take the empty cup and bring a water for him and an orange juice for me. I pretend like I just got the orange juice, my first cup! Definitely not the third/ maybe fourth, I lost count in the haze of orange juice.
Had to quickly snatch the tab so he wouldnât see my many 2.15 charges of OJ. Plan didnt work tho, I got a bad stomachache (whoâdve thunk it?!) and came clean to him. He laughed the entire way to get me medicine and laughed the whole way back. Communication, yâall.
